#Scanned image into 3DS?
10 messages in this thread
Help please.
I have a complex line drawing which could be scanned into most formats. I want
to convert the image so that it can be opened in 3d studio. So that I do not
have to redraw every element. It appears that this is possible and have tried
tracing the scanned image to produce an eps file in Corel Draw. I have then
exported the file as a .dxf format. However, 3ds doesnt like it and when
attempting to load the file 3ds tells me the are no 2d elements.
What am I doing wrong? Is there an easier way?
Thanks
Mike
Michael,
There are two places you can import DXF files, one is the 3D Editor, or the 2D
Shaper. Where are you when you try to import the file? Hopefully the Shaper.
I have a few different records of problems with the files once they are in the
shaper, such as too many vertex points or polygons that are not closed, but I
don't recall ever not being able to bring in a DXF file at all.
Also, have you tried importing it as an .AI file?
-Brian
Thank you for your prompt responce. We have tried shaper and 3d. The same
message always returns .
Yes, I have tried AI.
It always appears to be OK…CorelDraw exports the file. The file is then
imported into 3d but 3d cannot read it.
Coreldraw is tracing the image and creating a EPS file is this where the
problem could start?
I am at a loss at the moment. Will keep trying <groan>.
again Thank you
regards
Mike
Michael,
Sorry, I am at a loss to help you. I am not that familiar with Corel, and don't
have a copy here to work with. Hopefully one of the forum members who has both
programs will be able to offer advice.

I missed the begining of the thread, Brian, but if you'd like to send Michael
my way, I'll be happy to see if I can be of some assistance.

>>corel to 3DS…
Hi Mike,
I've exported from Corel (v3-v4) many times into 3DS without
problems. Are you using the autotrace in Corel? I've never used it
because it never gave clean results without a bunch of manual
editing. It was easier to simply load the bitmap and manually trace.
BTW, never use DXF from Corel to 3DS – it's a disaster.
I use File/Export and pick Adobe Illustrator,.AI,.EPS, then save it
as an Adobe Ill. 1.1, text as curves if appropriate. (I think you
need to make sure you have no fill and no line thickness – ask Alan
I, resident Corel expert, to be sure) In the shaper, I Load or Merge
and everything comes in just fine.
I have a range of software including AutoCAD, 3DS and Corel & I must admit that
I have never ever been able to persuade corel to read or write a correctly set
up DXF file, maybe someone in the corel forum could help ? If I have to get a
vector graphic from corel into autocad I usually use cut & paste or a WMF
(Windows Meta File) If you have ACAD for windows you might try it and then
export from there as a DXF, If not try complaining to corel !
Sorry I cant be more help
Regards
David……
I am in the midst of using Corel for some file conversions and have
found better success if the Autocad .dxf files use only one layer.
The most successful method, though, has been to save the single layer
files out from Autocad as .eps files. Corel seems to work better with
eps files than .dxf. When I say 'better' I am just saying I have had
more files successfully import as .eps than .dxf. The .dxf files I
brought into Corel often had many entities rotated incorrectly, fonts
of the wrong size and other unpredictable anomolies. With .eps files
I haven't seen any of this.
Bob.
Hmm…. thanks for that, I shall have to give it a try next time I need to get
a acad dwg into corel, what gets to me is that corel claims to be able to
import dxf files, yet it cant bring in one from acad, for that matter I seem to
remember that it cant even read the files it exports as dxf, oh well maybe they
will fix it next year <VBG>

David:
I am knee deep in file conversions with Corel at the moment. Corel can import
.dxf files but not .dwg files. Still, the best way I have found to get an ACAD
drawing into Corel is to send the file out as Encapsulated Postscript from
ACAD. With the strange exception of certain curved objects this has been the
best method. With R13 I bet one could just cut and paste. I do this with
MicroGDS, soon becoming my favorite CADD package. Its even got a decent
modeller.
