#Materials and smoothing

I have imported an object in the shape of a tapered drinking cup into Renderize Live. The object was created by a sweep operation and has 36 facets. When I apply a solid-color material and select smoothing for the object, the object renders smoothly, as expected. However, when I try to apply a marble-like material from the Textures and Materials CD, the facets become visible. I am using organic mapping. What is causing the facets to appear when I render the object? How do I prevent this? Thanks, Michael Katz

Pls re-check the object to confirm that smoothing is enabled. If it is, then I image the faceting is there when you render the oibject in solid color also, it's just less noticeable. I looked at the solid-color rendering again, and you are right — if I look hard enough, I can discern the facets. However, with the material applied, the facets really stand out. I think the problem is that the material pattern is not continuous from one facet to the next. It looks as if separate strips of material have been randomly applied to each facet. Is there a cure for this?

Yes, you've probably got Planar Mapping Type selected, which doesn't continue the texture map over non-parallel neighboring polygons. Organic, Spherical or Cylindrical mapping will probably work for you, depending on the shape of your geometry. The proper times to use Spherical or Cylindrical are self-explanatory; Organic works well with irregular shapes. Hope this helps. Nick Josephs Visual Software
