Get a Demo Tape?

OK – I am still trying to figure out if I should get 3DS, a PAR, and a SVHS deck to output animations to video. I would like to get a tape which would show me the quality which would be obtainable with this setup, as no amount of words seems to adequately convey if "it's good enough". I would like someone to hook up a SVHS deck to their PAR, put a VHS tape (not SVHS tape, I plan to distribute on VHS) in the deck and put any animation they have out to the tape thru 3DS. It doesn't have to be a great, big, fancy, long animation – just enough to let me see what quality is obtained – say a minimum of 30 secs. I am willing to specify that I will not play this animation for anyone else or use or re-use it in any way, so maybe you can just give me a sample of whatever you are already working on, which should make it easier on you. I am also willing to pay a reasonable cost to get this tape and determine what this setup is capable of. If you can provide this service, please let me know and we can e-mail some info on addresses, cost, etc. I hope to hear from someone!! Dennis

Dennis, I'd be glad to help you out, but I've gotta tell you that the PAR's quality is mostly lost when going out straight to VHS. Whether or not it is good enough for your needs only you can know, but S-VHS is a good step in the right direction, with Beta SP a more optimal format. Send me a self-addressed, post-paid package with a blank video tape (VHS, S-VHS, or both, if you prefer, and I'll be glad to run some animation off the PAR on for you and send it back. I'm Emailing you my address. -Alan

Great – I will send you a package. I appreciate it very much. Since I would plan to distribute to "ordinary" consumers I would need to go to VHS, and it sounds like 1st generation VHS is my best bet. Dennis P.S. I read your e-mail first, before checking in here, so ignore my confusing response there – I will mail you a self-addressed, stamped package with tape. Thanks again!

Hi Dennis, I have the same questions you have about the PAR. When you're finished looking at the tape Alan sends you, I'd love to see it. Please E-mail me with details about postag, address, etc. if you're willing to send it to me. Thanks, Scott Therriault Gulf Coast Multimedia

OK – e-mail me your address and I will send it on to you after I see it. Don't sweat the postage, I am so glad to get a look at this that in my euphoria I will spot you the charges. Dennis P.S. I am probably going to take the offer to send both a VHS and SVHS tape – are you interested in both, or just the VHS???

Dennis, Any DPS/PAR Dealer should be able to show you this, where are you located? We happen to handle the DPS/PAR/RazorPro setup and would be happy to spend some time with you on the system. We're located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. James M. Murphy

<< any PAR dealer should be able to show you this >> Good one! Did you hear the one about the farmer's daughter and the traveling salesman. I have contacted my local PAR dealer LINK SYSTEMS NORTH CANTON, OH and they have said that they don't do stuff like this (demos), but if I send them a BIG check they will ship me a PAR. I just had to include their name, so anyone within the sound of my voice will know not to do business with them. Have a nice day! Dennis

Well Dennis sorry to hear about your local PAR dealer. I do give demo's in fact my wife usually has to kick us out at about 11 or 12 at night….I've been known to start demos as early as 8am that went til 5 and of course the 3pm demo's get us kicked out around 11 at night. <G> I enjoy doing these as it's a chance for me to "show off" ! <BG> Sounds to me like your dealer doesn't have a dedicated Multimedia person. Anyone in this business full time is usually a total mutant and ya' can't shut em' up about their work/products/projects….etc….etc…. I love this business…. all I can say is, hop in your car an' come-ON-down! We've got a one day seminar April 19th at the Bourdini Center in Appleton Wisconsin and our 3D Artists Seminar's & Conference will be coming up in August! last year it went for 3 days and Steve Elliott was the lead instructor. Of course you could always just send us a BIG check…….<GR&D>. Murph'

Hi, Andrew! Did you get my Phone message? Regarding the Seminar April 19th….this is going to be for those who are either new to 3D Studio or are interested about learning about the Technology. I've got to post a full description regarding this particular seminar a bit later, however we will still be having our annual 3D Artists Seminar and Conference in August that's the BIG ONE! I'm still trying to put together the details at this time. If you were thinking on coming, I'd reccomend the Big One in August after Siggraph I got some really great ideas in the works! <BG> Thanks! Murph'
