I have lusted after 3DS ever since I heard of it, and finally an ancient version (1.something) lands in my lap. Loaded it on a 486-DX2 50v with 8 megs of ram and tons of hard drive room, and it would open but wouldn't run. Bought another 4 meg of ram, and now it runs, kind of, but should it have taken almost 2 hours to draw the toroid in the opening tutorial? I think not! Never even got to color it or add lights/camera. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG that it's soooo sloooooww? Help! I'm desparate to play with it! Also, is there such as thing as an upgrade? How do I get it?! Susan

Well, first the obvious… Make sure your cache is enable (internal and external) Local bus video? Make sure you're in turbo… (No, I'm not trying to insult you) Once you are absolutely sure that you machine is running as fast as it can… take a sladgehammer to your harddrive… er just kidding…. v1.x is going to be slow anyway, but I don't think it's that slow. Watch for a 2, it's resonable speed wise. Maybe someone else in here can help. Best Wishes Chris Norman

Chris, all my settings (turbo, cache, video bus) are all okay — I might take you up on the sledgehammer idea, though, because it's just so frustratlingly, PAINFULLY slow! Where does one find a version 2? Can you upgrade these things? I tried reloading it on a different drive, but it's the same thing. I've waited SO LONG to get my hands on 3DS, and now this! Thank heavens I have an animator pro to play around with! THAT runs FINE! Thanks anyway! Susan

Hi Susan, I don't know the full story about your probs, but the SLOW-ness you are finding sounds like the old HIMEM problem.. Try booting your machine with the HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.* commands deleted. Let me know if it works, Regards, Mark
