Hello John, yes JPEG would be better but I think TIFF could be read by everyone. >>I looked at SCALP_.TIF and HAUS.TIF and think your program may be very useful. From HAUS.TIFF, it looks like you can slice with more than a simple infinate plane thru the object. How do you specify the slice? How is this different from a boolean? (that is, a set of boolean subtractions on copies of the objects) If I download GOLD_C.EXE will that explain everything, or do you have something else which explains this better? SCALPEL will not replace boolean functions in 3D Studio nor does it use any kind of boolean algorithm. Our SCALPEL IPAS does one thing very precise and perfect (like a SCALPEL). With SCALPEL you will be able to cut any mesh object into two halfs. This is done in realtime (depending on your pc and memory) and anytime faster than a equal boolean. The V8 Motor was cut in about a minute and 3Ds own boolean took more than a hour. SCALPEL will allow more than one cut in one go. So it's possible to even create a round (interpolated) cut into any object. It doesn't matter how many cuts you are placing onto one or any number of objects. You just decide wich part is left over after doing several cuts in one go. You gave me a good idea I'm going to create an interactive demo of one cut as FLI File. The gold_c.exe is a compressed flic that shows an animated cut. >>BTW, if your IPAS will slice on a plane only, (instead of along an interactive, user-controled or specified path, etc.), would it be more appropriately named SLICER, CLEAVER, SPLITTER, SECTIONER or somesuch? Have you decided on a price yet? As mentioned above SCALPEL is able to slice along a "path" as long as you understand how the path is done. A zig zag cut into any mesh could be realized in this way. The price will be around US$99. SCALPEL will Include a userfriendly IPAS3 interface with a realtime preview. The realtime preview will be able to show any number of seperated objects. There is no need to group the objects before you use our IPAS. With displace for example you are not able to select more than one object for operation. As far as I know there is no other IPAS around that can do this. (Except you press F7 in release 4). If there any questions send me a mail

>>I think TIFF could be read by everyone… If your audience is the set of 3DS users, JPG support is included in the latest versions. Most of the graphics programs commonly in use, including the popular shareware Paintshop Pro, handle JPG. Also, with so many flavors of TIF, more programs seem to have problems with TIF than with JPG, TGA (or even GIF). Just trying to help you, since many people will not download a 400K "advertisement" due to the cost, and may then never see what your program will do. I'll look for your next sample. Perhaps you will include something that shows "how the path is done." JKJ

You are right! So every one interested could find now some demo pictures in JPEG format. The SCALPEL demo pictures show only the results you can achive with SCALPEL. Soon I will upload a demo flic showing the userinterface and more. . . regards edwin

Hi How can I get a copy of scalpel? Is it available yet?,What will it cost? Are you looking for Beta testers? Thanks for your time -David Camp

Hello David, if you are based in USA you can get the SCALPEL IPAS from Digimation. SCALPEL is now in it's final beta state and we think the final release will be available soon ( —> two weeks?) As you might know we are based here in germany and we do not only have problems about the language. The direct support for mm developers here in germany is like an adventure! Our only contact is via compuserve, the flow of information regarding development tools or anything regarding 3DS is really near to zero. I can't remember how often we asked autodesk germany (hallo herr mayer!) for 3DS support regarding development tools. What I want to say is that we are now waiting for further information material to complete our IPAS. regards edwin

Do you have access to the MM Dev Section of this forum? jonas[adesk]

Edwin, We at Georgia Tech are very interested in your IPAS. We called Digimation and they have put us on backorder. I really hope the IPAS will be available SOON, as it would make the difference with a couple of projects going on here, or at least we hope. Doug Georgia Tech GRA

Edwin, Please upload your sample images as .JPG, which is supported for viewing in 3D Studio 3 & 4, the target audience. I think a 400k TIFF is overkill to illustrate your plug-in's functionality. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
