Hi Raymond, I read about the equipment that you have and would like to ask you
some questions. I also have the VX3 and really like it's manual features and
picture quality. I wish it was a shoulder mount though. I found that it is
indeed a "battery eater". I solved this problem with a Bescor 10AH battery
belt. I have recorded continuously for over an hour with out losing power. I
don't yet know how long it will last.
I currently edit with a Vdeck controlled by EZV2 PC software to a SLV-R5 or
EVS3000 Hi-8 deck if I want to dub music on to the PCM tracks. EZV2 lets me do
slow mo, freeze, fade video and/or audio and can do A/B rolls. A great little
package for $350.
I would like to purchase the FAST lite soon but I am not sure how it would work
with the SLV-R5 or EVS-3000 that I have. Does the FAST machine use time code on
the record deck? How do you do Insert editing? I have the FAST video by
Knowledge Path but it is still not clear.
I have no experience with the EVS-3000 so I can't comment about it. I use a
single SLV-R5UC as my record deck and the VX3 as my source deck. The full VM
that I have has absolutely no problem controlling this combination and performs
both video and/or audio inserts without a hitch (left, right or both channels).
As far as I know, the VM Lite should also perform this function without a
problem. I believe the only difference is that the VM LIte does not have the
alpha channel capabilities that the full VM does but does have all of the
identical deck drivers and controls. For both the R5UC and VX3, VM uses Sony's
RCTC both on the source and the record decks. The preferred mode of operation
with VM studio is to prestripe your output tapes and then only use insert
editing. VM makes this a very painless task. VM will also do assembly edits
but I've only every tried it once. I have no experience with any other editors
other than VM so I can't compare but I would highly recommend VM as a good
choice. You might want to drop a note in the FAST section of the MULTIBVEN
forum. There is lots of good VM info that can be had there.

Thanks for your reply. I don't beleive that the FAST machine could use RCTC on
the record deck since that TC is only used in the 8/Hi-8 format. I understand
that the FAST machine can stripe VITC on the input and output tapes but can't
see how it could possibly read the VITC when it is insert dubbing. I would
think that the record deck would have to be in play mode to read the VITC.
I would like to know exactly how this works to ensure that the insert edits
will be near frame accurate. How accurate are the edits on your system?
Harry, For the Fast VM to read time code during insert, You would have to
connect a cable from one of the outputs of the recorder back to another input
of the VM board. This would keep the deck calibrated with the players. I've
been using it for some time and it works well.

Lynn, during insert editing, does the VITC signal get rewritten or is it left
intact or does it get wiped out when using the FAST machine?
Harry, The time code remains intact. What happens when you conect that second
output back to the VM, is that the VM is reading the time code from the tape
and using that same time code to keep track of the tape location. It reads it
the same way it reads the code from the player tapes. The instructions are in
the manual, but I (along with many other users) missed it the first time
around. I had to ask other users what to do. I went back to the manual, and
there it was.
Don't know if you ever tried mixing sound from the hi-fi tracks of a player
back to the linear tracks of the same player. If you did, it would be about
the same thing. Hope this helps.

The VM will handle RCTC on both the players and record deck.

The deck is in play mode while doing video inserts. It just dosen't insert
anything over the top 21 lines where the VITC resides.

RCTC stands for "rewritable consumer time code" which Sony developed for their
8mm format. If you are using a Sony SLV-R5 as an output deck, you must be using
VITC generated by the FAST machine. The R5 is an S-VHS machine that cannot read
or record RCTC.
You are correct in how the FAST machine does video inserts.

I noticed that you are using the Sony EzV2 PC software and I would appreciate
your input for the following project. I have several tapes of Hi8 video that I
need to edit. The video editing is cuts only (unless we try to do something
fancy) with occasional text/graphics overlays, but for the audio, I need to
delete certain portions of the audio track while keeping the accompanying
video. I would like to use one or more software programs and any other required
equipment and accomplish this by developing edit lists that the programs can run
automatically to dub new tapes from the original. Will the EzV2 software and 2
Vboxes allow me to do this? My source will be a TR-700 and I will be dubbing
to a VHS VTR. I also have a EVC-100 Hi8 VTR that I could use, but I want to
avoid any intermediate generations in the dub. Assuming that this works, will
I need anything else to accomplish this? Also, I noticed that the software
supports GPI trigger of external devices via a Vbox, but the description of the
Vbox doesn't mention GPI. Is GPI and LANC the same thing?
