Part One: The $250,000.00 spent on atty. fees fighting the union at CARDCO was not the cause of the companys demise. It was just mentioned in passing as another aggrivation we had to endure. In fact the $250,000.00 was money well spent. If the company had ceeded to the union's demands from the start the cost to the company (and therefore the american consumer would have been closer to $600,000.00 in additional wages and operating costs. That amount would have been much more likely to have caused the company to go under. Part Two: I, as the President of CARDCO, was proud to say that our products were 'PROUDLY MADE IN THE U.S.A.' and the same is true of our aMEGA Board for the Amiga being made by C Ltd. But after dealing with a UNION, I sometimes question my position. Before the union came to CARDCO, the company paid assemblers $5 – $6.65 an hour, had a 100% company paid health plan that included a $1 PCS card and Dental coverage, provided pre-paid legal services paid for 100% by the company, and we even had two weeks paid vacation after the first year of service. All of this from a company that was less than two years old! Aside from more money the only thing the union wanted was to control my company! The money we just couldn't afford (we were giving our workers as much as we could and still turn a profit). But as for control, in a volitile business like we were in, I could not allow a union to say who I had to have do what job. Our industry demands total flexibility in a work force, my company depended on our ability to respond quickly as situations changed.
