Does anyone know if the Commodore MPS 801 printer can be used with the Amiga?
I think that it was originally designed for use with the C64.

Possibly an 801 could be used in conjunction with one of the 64 emulators for
the Amiga… probably not in any other way that would be remotely practical,
since it uses the weird C64 serial bus connector and handshaking that has no
resemblance to anything on the Amiga.

Thanks for the reply, Nick. I`m not familiar with 64 emulators for the Amiga.
Can you give me a few makers? Is it hardware, software, or both? (well, I guess
it would have to include hardware). Do you know if it would be possible (with
an emulator) to transfer an Amiga file (in ASCII) to a 64 file then print
with MPS 801? Wait, if its an ASCII file it would just need the emulator for
the port adaptor and handshaking, right? Thanks for your help-as you can see
I`m no expert on this subject.

Barry, there are two emulators that I know of, called GO 64 and RUN 64. The one
I am more familiar with is RUN 64, which is marketed by a company called
ReadySoft. It is all software except, as you say, for a 64 serial cable with an
Amiga parallel connector at one end. I believe the type of file transfers
you're talking about could be readily achieved with that emulator, although a
null modem cable would be a more straightforward approach if you don't want the
emulator for anything else. The deluxe route would be to get an Amiga 5 1/4"
disk and the Disk-2-Disk software for reading and writing 1541 format files on
the Amiga, but that would cost you more than a printer for your Amiga.

I remember a previous discussion about printer drivers where someone claimed to
have written a driver that worked with his 1525. I don't remember who, but
isn't the 1525 the same thing as the 801?
You'll need a lot of electronics smarts to get the interface to work.
Commodore's serial bus is a hacked IEEE and bears little resemblance to either
Centronics parallel or RS232C.

Thanks for the reply-I think the 801 is the same as the 1525. It was
suggested that I use a 64 Emulator for the Amiga to handle the screwy serial
por fo the 64. I don`t think I`m going to bother though as I already have a working Seiksosha that has a
really nice NLQ mode. At the time I asked the question I didn`t know that the
64s port was different. Thanks anyhow.
