Hi. I'm hoping someone here can help me with questions I have about the HP
Deskjet Plus printer. I have a chance to get one on Sunday at a very good
price, and it's a limited time offer. I'm not familiar with the Deskjet or
with inkjet technology, I'm afraid. I'm hoping someone who has used one can
tell me: 1) Is the print quality comparable to laser printing? 2) How well
does it handle graphics, or is it even capable of reproducing graphics? 3)
Can it use Amiga fonts, or is it limited to the fonts that are built into
the machine? 4) Can inkjet printers produce legible type down to 8 point?
5) If it CAN handle the Amiga fonts (like those on Workbench) as
downloadable fonts, does this machine that the speed of the printer
drastically slows? (Specifically, I'm thinking of the crawl that dot matrix
printers move at when attempting some of those "Fancy fonts" programs.
As you can probably tell, what I'm looking for in a printer is laser
quality at dot matrix prices. I know that sounds too good to be true, but
folks here swear that's possible. These same people, however, are the ones
who are selling the merchandise. 😉 I already have a dot matrix printer,
so merely getting the words on the page in legible form isn't what I'm
looking for. I can do that now. I want something that looks closer to
typeset quality. Thanks in advance for anyone's and everyone's help.

I currently have a DeskJet (not a plus) and I'm very pleased with it. I
use it for stuff at home and an occasional presentation for work. Now, I'll
try to answer your questions.
1) Yes, the print quality is close to laser. I think laser output is still
a little bit "cleaner", especially on graphics, but the quality from the
DeskJet is very good. A word of warning: don't get DeskJet output wet;
the ink will run and smear quite nicely.
2) Yes, it will handle graphics. Again, I think laser output is a little
better, but the DeskJet output is better than anything I've seen from
a dot matrix.
3) You can download fonts to printer, but I believe you need to buy a RAM
attachment for the printer. Also, I'm not aware of anyone who sells
the Amiga fonts in a downloadable form. HP does sell several different
fonts for the printer, but I don't have experience in using them.
I use Profession Page (a desktop publishing package) which has its own
fonts which are scaleable to most any size. It prints them by driving
the printer in graphics mode and the resulting output is very nice.
4) Yes, I have printed things at 8 point that were quite legible.

5) Again, I'm not sure how fast the printer would print if you used down-
loaded fonts. It is not fast when you print in graphics mode, like I
do, but it is certainly no slower than a dot matrix printer. I afraid
that for speedy graphics, you would have to put out the bucks for a
laser.
