Thanks for the quick answer! I've seen the Multisync II which does leave a border. That IS annoying. The Multisync II does not allow you to set the horizontal width which would probably do the job. If you can adjust the height one should be able to adjust the width,…
Joe – The upgrade from Silver 1.1 to Turbo Silver was $30. The only real reason for the charge was that Turbo Silver is a major re-write of the original package, and we felt the $30 was justified, given the added features and enhancements it offers. Turbo version 3.0 is…
Stan, the letter that came with the Silver 1.1 upgrade some time ago said future upgrades would probably be $25 or so. Have you changed your policy? (Personally, I don't mind at all paying a reasonable amount for upgrades that add features, but I'm probably in the minority :-). )…
Vic, No. I hadn't seen ITC. Will check it out. The dealer I was referring to is on Tustin, a feww blocks north of 17th. Century Computer in La Habra is the only dealer I have found reliable re Amiga equipment. Rich
Of course! and one each for left and right parenthesis.
The most difficult part of this type of program is the object editor. (for us at least) The reason being the inherent problems with the Amiga re-draw and amigados clipping routines, prohibit us from actually doing it the way we want to. For the forseeable future we have no plans…

Check into Lights, camera, action by Aegis. They can provide the synch you are looking for with Sonix scores. Shalom
Thanks Stan. I thought that when you mentioned the TSilver version of 3-Demon in an earlier message, you were alluding to 3-Demon's full support of TSilver. I did't know what it was then, but I have just read a review in Amiga World. The way this is heading, I will…

Gee Richard, which dealer is that? Have you tried ITC on South Grand in Santa Ana?
Stan, I'm just curious. I'm not a TSilver user, or a Sculpt user, or a user of any 'art' program other than DPaint II. However, since you admit your object editor isn't the greatest and some of your users confirm this, will Impulse be upgrading it in the near future?…
We have the Magnovox Professional Monitor (8CM738 or something). It does a nice job with the flickerFixer as compared to a 1080 with no deinter- lacing. I don't have much of a basis for comparison with other monitors however. One thing, maybe someone can comment on this, apparently MultiSync moni-…
#Flicker Fixer
Message #4155
I haven't been around for a couple of months. So I might have missed what I'm looking for. Does any of you folks out there has a Flicker Fixer? I'm planning to buy one but would like to hear from you about any experience with FF and monitors. Anybody tried…
I talked with Brian Grainger about it just a little back in June, but he didn't seem overly optimistic, either. And I haven't heard from Len in ages. Jesse Knight was my best COMAL contact close to home, but he is doing C and assembler on the Amiga and has…
Bob – Once an object is brought into TSilver via interchange you can then give it whatever properties you didn't have in the original editor, i.e. refraction, or mapping etc. 3-Demon should have their Turbo Silver version out shortly, and they support all of our properties except mapping and textures.
I think you are missing a basic point of both our packages and the others on the market for the Amiga. All of us, with the exception of Caligari, are really pushing it on the Amiga to get the results we currently are. It is IMPOSSIBLE to acurately time HAM…
It seems as though the shortest path to more realistic renderings is to move to Turbo Silver and adjust to their object editor. I know that there are object translators, but if the source object editor doesn't have the characteristics that TSilver has, how can it translate what is not…
I saw an animation package last week at the media lab which was somewhat closer to what I expect in an animation package: large 24-bit color screen, all scenes iconsized in a window, click on scene and a blocky version plays instantly in another window, object motion done at the…

RAY TRACE
Message #4120
I've been playing around with DBW render. First thing you MUST do is set your stack to at least 10000 using the CLI "STACK 10000" command. I personally tend to use 50000. I'm not certain what you mean with processing Deluxe Paint through Ray. Ray produces a .TMP output file.…
What the Octree unit apparently does is this: Using a decent 4 head VCR (so they can get seamless edits), they record a frame for several seconds along with an SMPTE time code. Then they render the next frame, rewind the tape to several seconds BEFORE the frame they just…

#Comal for Amiga?
Message #4117
I was (am??) a beta tester for Amiga COMAL. I received the disk and two mailings containing docs, etc. I was a slow version and the editor was pretty bad. I wrote several long letters giving my reactions, but I have not head from them since. I was told that…
I called Byte by Byte on Friday to check this out, and the answer is "No", the "glass" texture is the same as the old one, although the rendering is supposed to be a little improved. We are still not able to select the refractive index. My feeling is that…
Perry – The 24bit mode in the VD1 and Turbo Silver 3.0 refers to the 16. whatever colors displayable from a RAW RGB file. Using the VD1 you can capture a RAW Image and send it back out the VD1 NTSC only. Our engineer who designed it claims that NTSC…
Say Stan, can you outline what 24 bit mode on VD1 means? I've been meaning to ask since I must have missed some information somewhere. We've got 24 bit color input coming from our full color scanner and do a very good job of converting it to HAM. But, 24…
Claude – I'll try some different lighting effects to see what the optimum results are at given distances. The "ears" on the street say that several rendering packages are about to come to market in the next few months giving the user lots of choice. As long are ancilary products…
Stan, Your welcome. I will be looking for the later pics. I suspect that the 'ghost' is caused by the screen phospher not decaying fast enough from the fairly bright polygon. The effect is noticable because the object is in the foreground, ie, the companion object is displaced more then…
Steve, to record to a standard VCR, wouldn't you require large amounts of memory so you can dump it as a live action shot. Is there some way around this?
Fred – We internally keep that resolution for 2 reasons. First should we eventually design a PAL unit for the european market we need the extra lines. Second when the VD1 is modified with the Frame Buffer option, it allows better dithering when in 24bit mode for de-pixelizing the image.…
Joe – To be honest the cost to the end user is rarely a consideration when we design hardware. Our main concern is the final results. We have been in development for about 5 years, and have always created products We wanted for ourselves first. It it turns out that…
Thanks Joe we do appreciate it. Remember to have your dealer keep a good stock of Interchange and the Turbo Silver module around, so you can use the objects you created in SC3D and not have to re-build them. I think with the release of 3.0 we will start seeing…
Leslie – The cost of the VD1 with Frame Buffer is $1000. REAL availability should be just another few weeks, though we have shipped some already.
You mentioned a 768×768 NTSC signal? (approx) Since NTSC uses 525 scan/raster lines per frame (2 fields interlaced) How can we have more than the number of horizontal scan lines? (Not even all of the 525 lines are visible due to blanking/timing and/or other signals present in the NTSC signal.)…
I'm a Digi-VIew owner, who is looking for a purchase in the LIVE! department. I like LIVE! due to it's "live" look, and how other software houses are starting to develop software that interacts with LIVE! (Such as Fantavision, Invision, etc ). LIVE! is also price effective, costing less than…
Thanks for the information. Since I already own Sculpt-3D, I will probably wait till I see Silver 3.0 on the shelves before I buy.. though I WILL buy Silver. From playing with it at the stores, I find it more powerful than S3D, a few extra features, and most importantly…
If I remember correctly from Octree's presentation at a user meeting a while back, the package is not only the 3D rendering software, but also a high quality VCR and a hardware adapter so that you can record frame by frame DIRECTLY to the VCR. Next best thing to buying…
I uploaded at least one version of QRT, and everything I received was uploaded. I think the executable is in one file and everything else may be in the source. And it is possible that the source is in the C Programming library. You might try there.

After downloading the "Quick Ray Tracer" from DL 9 I noticed that the archive seems to be missing the Users reference guide. Could someone who has this upload it?
Mirrored surfaces have to be rendered in PHOTO mode. Change your observer mode to PHOTO, start rendering, pop a movie in the VCR, make some popcorn, and enjoy yourself while your mirrored image is created. A full-length movie should cover the waiting period beautifully.
Claude, Thanks. The reason it was in DL 11 is because the pictures are "rendered" not painted and DL11 is for "Derived Images". Please be as critical as you can. We are trying to produce as effective a set of images as possible. It's possible that the ghost is from…

Octree's Caligari 3D
Message #4028
Caligari is here, but who is going to shell out $1995.00 for another 3D product? Even if you are a professional, you have products like Video-Scape 3d for around $130. So who is going to buy this stuff?
Joe either in the DL's here or in AmigaVendor DL4, download a couple of the pictures done with the VD1. As with Digi-View, the quality of the output is mostly determined by the quality of the incoming signal. It's the old "GIGO" routine. The pictures of the Orange, Trumpet, Waterfall…
Joe – The washed out results definitely sound like either the light is too bright or too close to the object. Given the same setup I'm very confident that you would find the colors in the rendered image noticebly better in TSilver. As for your problems with the color requester,…
#Using 3D Sculpt

Can anyone answer a question about using 3D Sculpt? I have not been able to get the true mirror-effect that I've seen in some of the sample pictures. Selecting Mirror-effect just gives me a suface that looks dull-grey? What am I doing wrong?

Your VD1 digitizer, is it commercially available? If so, can you please give me more info. I'm wondering if you can achieve Digi-View quality with the digitizer. As for LIVE! compared w/ Digi-View I find that Digi-View has the quality, whereas LIVE! has the speed. Where does your VD1 come…

I've been playing with Turbo Silver at my local neighborhood computer dealer to evaluate it before I dish out the money to purchase it. Through my hours of playing, and rendering, I have to admit the time required to render an object is considerably faster than Sculpt-3D. With Sculpt-3D, rendering…
This Targa system you mention, can you give me more information concerning this? I've heard Targa around the system, but don't know about it. I'd appreciate knowing what system it runs on (IBM I assume), costs, etc..
Bob – The NEW manual for TSilver went to the printers yesterday, and we expect to have them back by Friday next week at the latest. I do agree that our object editor leaves much to be desired. But with programs like Interchange and 3-Demon out there, lots of folks…
Thanks Stan, but I have Turbo Silver and it is superior in the ways you mention, but I have a hard time mentally 'connecting' with your object editor/user interface. Some aspects are obvious and intuitive, but others seem cryptic and obtuse, or even arbitrary. And, frankly, the documentation I have…
