John, The chip is a Fairchild dual RS232/RS423 line driver. DEC uses them in a lot of places including the Pros. Several companies such as Texas Instruments second source them so they are available. In singles they run around $2. Try Newark for the TI version, uA9636ACP. Their number depends…

From: Bill Walker The PDP-11 Forum · RT11 Applications May 31, 1990 2:43 PM
Jeff — The source of confusion was probably the fact that the native RT-11 C compiler was delayed due to the lack of formal I&D space support under RT-11. The C folks had to compensate for this. As far as the 5.5 compatibility issue goes… Well, we both know how…

From: Jeff Campbell The PDP-11 Forum · RT11 Applications May 31, 1990 10:36 AM
Thanks for the update, I hadn't heard about the compiler being native under XM. I would assume that it would require 5.5 since that's what's shipping currently. I imagine the run-time library has 5.5 dependencies in it that will keep the compiler output from being backwards compatible as well. Jeff

I use DECUS C on RT11 XM (with VBGEXE) regularly. The full package is available on magtape from DECUS. The binaries are here in library 2, files CC.BIN, AS.BIN, CBUGS.DOC, STDIO.H, SUPORT.BIN, CLIB.BIN, ATOF.OBJ, DTOA.OBJ, and possibly some other docs (do a browse). If you get the source and are…

Jeff, Note that your license to copy software does NOT extend to copying software from other sites! Assuming your license is legitimate, you have the right to copy _within_ your University, but you MUST buy the first copy from Digital or an authorized Digital sales channel. -Bill

Correction: Digital will be releasing an RT-11 native C compiler. I don't have my notes in front of me, but you may be required to run the compiler under the XM monitor. Also, I'm not sure if it will be compatible with RT-11 V5.0; it may require a newer version…

Jeff, Digital currently does not have a C compiler for RT-11. There will be a VAX based C cross compiler with RT-11 as a target OS. It's supposed to be released this summer. There is a public domain C compiler available through DECUS, which supports RT-11, RSX and VMS.

UNIBUS cards are not directly compatible with LSI-11 systems, which use a Q-bus. You can buy third-party bus-adapters, but they're relatively obscure and hard to find these days. The M7856 is also known as a DL11-W. It consists of a standard DL11 serial interface (RS232 I think) and a real-time…
