I knew Darth Vader was out there somewhere. 🙂 Actually after I sent that message, I expected Lucas' Legal division to pop up and tell me not to take Lord Vader's name in vain or any other way without written authorization from them. Paul

#166540 Fonts in AA 1.3 Message #166555
Animator Pro does not utilize Truetype fonts, but it does do a phenomenal job of reading virtually any postscript font. Simply find the location of all of your windows *.pfb fonts and then point AAPro to that directory. It will not only access all of them but will also show…

>> I thought that 3DS's *.fnt fonts were proprietary? Nope they're actually a pretty standard format. Paul

I for one would love to take a gander at it. It would actually be a powerful little additive to help stem some of the piracy that goes on out there. Who do I direct my desire to have it posted on the forum to? TIA, Paul
#166298 #Font conversion Message #166311
Well Alan it's not a claim, it's a fact that was pointed out to me by several individuals who tried to do it, and ended up having to re-lowlevel their drives. Basically what happens is that since they lack kerning, leading, hinting, etc. when a program like Microsoft Word tries to use…
#166265 Font conversion Message #166291
My long term memory really stinks, but I did think we had met before. Hopefully I'll be at the Adesk party this year and we'll run into each other again. If Adesk continues it's pursuit for more intimate settings as they did at NAB, we can't help but run into…

Wow! Ultimately Cool! If I make my own club, can I come along? I once had the opportunity to help local law enforcement catch a person who was hacking his way into the police database and stealing information. It was phenomenal fun. Not to mention rewarding. But for some reason…

Actually I ended up pulling the cards after the 100 that were in 3DS ended up on every BBS in the world. If 3DS had a proprietary font format I'd gladly give them to Gary for the next release, but I just have way too much work in them to…
#166223 #Font conversion Message #166226
You didn't insult me at all. I want people just like yourself to use the fonts and make money from cool animations that include the typesets. I just wish that I could afford to pass them out to 3ds users and not have to worry about the world getting them.…
#166187 #Font conversion Message #166200
Considering that you have to alter the fonts to bring them into windows, and altering, recompiling, etc. is not only a violation of the licensing agreeme nt but also a copyright infringement. I really don't think it's ridiculous. The normal licensing fee for the set that's on the CD is…

The Type 1's in 3DS are specifically designed for 3D Studio. Not only do they lack the font metric information they also lack hinting information, kerning information and several other neat little tidbits that would make them suitable for DTP work. They are also licensed for use specifically for 3DS,…

Martin, Disk Striping is software implemented on the SGI boxes. If you decide to do it, I can easily walk you through it over the phone, or I'm sure there's bound to be someone wandering around Metrolight who has enough IRIX savvy to pop their head in and get it…

I don't know of any SGI based trapping software but I'll definately check for you. I don't really know of anyone off hand who uses their SGI boxes for pre-press. It does seem to me that my group handled a similar question for a client a year or so ago.…

Yep, IMHO the absolute best 2D paint compositing program on earth. I run it and love it. Parallax has been ripe for picking for a while. Original spec was that Alias would purchase them, then SGI was looking at them, but AVID? I have no idea where that came from.…

Wow, I can't believe that so many people don't know what Parallax does. Matador is the SoftImage/Alias/Wavefront of the 2d paint and compositing world. Virtually every map you've seen in the last 5 years from ILM, Boss, etc. is done in Matador. All of the dino skin for JP was…
Martin, I just moved onto an island in the Chesapeake Bay :-), Deep water access less than 40 yards off my back deck! I've been faxing out updated numbers but, I haven't yet found your fax number at Metrolight. I know I had it when we were talking about machines,…
Start by getting something other than the 4/310 as a server and then put faster network cards in. What's your primary problem with the network: a.) You're using NFS and it takes forever to transfer a file to the 4/310 b.) You're running into collision problems Paul

Bob, I have a note here to write you an e-mail, I try not to endorse things on the forum, but I'm in the middle of changing my residence so it'll be a day or two. If you have an immediate specific question or two, e-mail it to me and…

Actually the problem is the other way around. 🙂 Although Macs have always been able to read ISO 9660 in an emulation mode. (( I was doing it on my MAC 5 years ago)), PC's can not read MAC disks. I'm also under the understanding that Suns can't read MAC…
#157166 #Mac qustions Message #157182
I have read a number of articles associated with the MCD device, sounds really nice. Also keep in mind the new CD standard will hold 2+gigs per disk. Really Nice! Unfortunately even though the new MACs will read the ISO9660 format as long as the Mac file system divides all…

Check your e-mail, I have lots of suggestions but we'll probably do better in e-mail mode. Paul
#156721 #Mac qustions Message #156730
Well the ISO 9660 format is strictly a PC format but lots of CDRom Readers for other systems will read it. As a general rule Macs choke on 9660 disks unless you happen to be writing in Hybrid Yellow Book mode. Newer Macs are utilizing dual format drives that will…

All you need to do is to write the gold master in HFS/Yellow Book format as opposed to ISO 9660. You can obtain special drivers for the Mac that will allow it to read ISO 9660, but it defaults to HFS.

ana, I do remember our "heated" discussion. I've sinced changed my ways. 🙂 The forum has changed considerably since that time. I much prefer e-mail discussions and debates now. One need only review some of the recent threads in Asoft to realize that there's way too much mean spiritedness floating…

O.K., Now that I'm on here, here's my first problem with the renderer. Whoever decided that it was going to be policy to only allow one renderer license to run per server during the beta period seems to have missed a vital aspect of this. The vast majority of shops…
