replay Message #56233
Thanks Alan. I'll give AAplayHI a try tonight. Dave
#55971 #Lighting Message #56229
Robert, How goes it? There is an excellent article in the June '93 CADalyst on architectural rendering that discusses lighting issues. If you don't have a copy I could send or fox a copy of the article. Also, just from experience I think the best way to light indoor scenes…
#55904 #Moving sky Message #56228
I think the file Greg was refering to is CLOUDS.ZIP it consists of a large dome and a very nice cloud map. If you just put it over your geometry and slowly rotate it as your animation proceeds you will get a very nice moving cloud effect. Dave Mennenoh
Bailey, Just as a suggestion try changing the font setting of the DOS box when the image is being displayed. The font setting is under the control-menu box – in the upper left. Let me know if that does it. Dave Mennenoh
Sounds totally funny. I can just imagine some of the entries now. Dave Mennenoh
#OS/2? Message #56225
Great discourse on OS/2 2.1 of course. I keep thinking I should put it on my system but I haven't had the guts. So many people have been teeling me how great it is lately. Isn't it funny how Microsoft made such a hoopla about NT and then it didn't…
#Network printing Message #56224
Neil, What are you trying to print – Rendered images? There really aren't (someone jump in if I'm lying) any ADI printer drivers available for 3DS. For hardcopy of rendered images most users tend to use a windows based product such as Photo styler or Corel Draw. Micro Grafx Designer…
Thanks much. Any idea when the second issue will arrive? Can't wait to see it. Dave Mennenoh
Ralph, Thanks for the info. Where did you pick up the VideoTex utilities? I'd probably like to get those. Can you give me any more info on the memory requirements? I've got a 4/66 with 32Mb. Any idea on how much footage I could capture at a time? Thanks for…
replay Message #56221
Thanks Alan. I'll give AAplayHI a try tonight. Dave
Vern, (Can I call ya Vern?) I can't comment on the Ill Pro but I can say a few things about the Targa card. I have a 16/32 and like it a lot. I haven't done any single frame work with it but using for doing real time out to…
#55541 Etched Letters Message #55564
Mark, >> I tried to boolean subtract lofted letters from a lofted box. I >> tessaletated (is this a word?) my stone box a number of times but >> nothing happened. I thought this would give me enough vertices. I >> guess not. Can anyone help? What do you mean…
#55520 #replay Message #55563
Alan, good idea – about the RAM drive. But 3DS really should support playing anim's from RAM. It also loves to play them way too fast. Hope this gets fixed in R3. Dave Mennenoh
#55284 Watchdog Circuit Message #55562
The only thing I've heard of that will do something like that is Compaq's system manager board. It will call you/page you whatever to alert you of a system error. It is an EISA board and I'm not sure if it will work in anything but a System Pro or…
Angelo, Did you lose the address database? Maybe that's why I never got a newsletter. Sorry to hear that. Could you please put my name back on the list? Dave Mennenoh Office Technology Inc. 1315 Gillingham Rd. Neenah, WI 54957
#55450 #VTR Skipping Frames Message #55560
Martin, PMJI – but I've got a couple of comments/questions about JPEG. I got the JPEG .PDR file from the Animator lib and installed it in PRO. I then had 3DS render out sequential .TGA's and used a windows JPEG program to convert all of the .TGA's into .JPG's. Then…
James, PMJI – but Hi there! Just to let you know I have a Targa+ 16/32 here at home and Have done some real time to tape with it using APro. It works very well actually – I'm quite happy with the results. If you need any info or anything…
#53391 3ds hardware lock Message #53519
FYI- I use 3DS with a Gateway 4/66 and don't have to turn the printer on to use 3DS – never gotten a message about the dongle. Same thing on a Compaq Deskpro/M – printer does not have to be on… Dave Mennenoh
#53023 RENDERING PROBLEMS Message #53518
From: david W. mennenoh Autodesk Software Forum · General August 15, 1993 12:35 PM
Phil, It doesn't sound like a core vertice problem like Alan suggested – but you never know. It sounds like you are just booleaning with objects that are not detailed enough. Try tesselating the faces of one or both of your objects and do the boolean again. I had this…
#53010 IPAs Message #53517
From: david W. mennenoh Autodesk Software Forum · General August 15, 1993 12:35 PM
Ana, PMJI but FYI Autodesk published an info sheet stating specifically that _all_ of their applications work perfect with Dos 6.0. We have all of our machines at work running it and have had no problems. Though we refuse to use Double Space….. Dave
#53303 Help Message #53516
Carl, Thanks for the info. I'm in WI though – so stacey's might not be the easiest store to get to. I will check and see if I can order them from Dalton or something. Thanks again Dave
#53119 Printing in 3DStudio Message #53515
Ananad, You can print from any windows app using the HP supplied windows drivers. Corel Draw is just nice as it can handle larger sizes than most others. Dave
Per my last message, I had asked about why multi-task the renderer under OS/2? DUH… Sorry but I guess it would be beneficial to render and use your computer for other stuff. I guess I was in a state of confused sleepiness when I asked that. Dave Mennenoh
#52718- #VIBRANT DRIVERS IN 3DS 3 Message #52776
"Vibrant Graphics' specific knowledge has given them the ability to produce as optimized a driver as is possible," said Gary Yost developer of 3D Studio. Brian, If your driver technology is as optimized as possible in R3 then what will paying $295 for liquid speed get me but less money…
Gary, Gosh it's nice of you to have posted all your credit card info for me. I just purchased a nice Laser recorder on it. Boy are you generous or what? Posting your card info for the whole world to see. I can't thank you enough. I have been trying…
Anand, If you have Corel Draw you can easily print to the DesignJet 650C using the included Windows driver for the product. Just save in .TGA or .TIF (I like .TGA) and import into Corel Draw. Then just pring it… Works great. The output from the 650C is very nice…
#52660 #OS/2? Message #52773
I can't resist – and don't take this wrong, but why list it in the features list if it does nothing to enhance ones work. I mean it does make sense that it will not be faster but then why use it at all? Just wondering. Dave Mennenoh
#52724 speed tests Message #52772
Brian, You've got great products. Now if 3DS only had a display list like AutoCAD it would really fly. Redraws are still _way_ slower than AutoCAD. Is there a reason for this? Dave Mennenoh
I may be still missing something but you could use a helical path with no height to make a flat spiral path… Dave Mennenoh

Gosh… Looks like I'm going to have to delve into the world of IPAS programming. There's just so much that's possible. Think there's any chance that being a fair-to-midland kind of C programmer would do it? Dave Mennenoh
#52735 PHAR LAP ERROR 10034 Message #52769
Robert, Actually the newest DL-Xpress is 2.16. Hope you can fix the prob. Dave Mennenoh
#52734 IPAS Message #52768
From: david W. mennenoh Autodesk Software Forum · General August 9, 1993 10:06 PM
Ed, IPAS (Image processing, Procedural modeling, Animated stand-ins, and Solid Patterns) IPAS routines are external programs that allow 3D Studio to be expanded via other developers. Using IPAS routines one has access to such things as fractal terrain and plant life generators, particle systems such as rain, snow, and fireworks,…

Larry, thanks for the info. Could you maybe build enough to just send me one? Dave
#52613 Digitizer for 3ds? Message #52766
Robert, We've tried both settings and they both did the same thing. Only thing that helped was moving the DB away from the monitors. Oh well – thanks for the tip on using polled though. That may come in handy in the future. Hey – it was nice talking to…
#52602 Pharlap error 10118 Message #52765
Don, Cool idea – putting stacker right on the controller. I'll bet it will be much faster – and not having to load the drivers would be great. BTW, I know STAC is making an OS/2 specific version of stacker – if that's worth anything. Dave Mennenoh
#52599 PHAR LAP ERROR 10034 Message #52764
Robert, Hmmm.. that may be your problem. Contact Jack Bayt (he's fairly regular on here) from Vibrant Graphics and you should be able to get an upgrade to the latest and greatest. Though, this may not solve your problem. Maybe Jack could be of further assistance on whether or not…
#52578 Help Message #52763
Greg, Thanks for the tip. Know if I could just find those books around here. I'll see if I can't order them myself. Dave
Robert, Intersting problem. What video driver are you using? I know older versions of Vibrants DL-Xpress would do something similair. You could render an image like 5 times or something then it would start acting up. Just a thought. Dave Mennenoh

#52539 #Digitizer for 3ds? Message #52553
Robert, We do have quite a few customers using Calcomp DB's and while they do work they seem to be buggy. IMHO. One of our customers wanted the Calcomps and we sold them 6 of them. For the longest time the crosshairs in AutoCAD would just wiggle on the screen…
#52489 Compaq 486/66m Message #52552
John, It's not odd they went with Vibrant if you look at driver technology. It's just the fact that Autodesk has always seemed to use Panacea's drivers in the past. It would be nice to see them do the same thing with AutoCAD. Can't wait to see R3! Dave Mennenoh
#52486 #Compaq 486/66m Message #52551
Alan, Know what you mean about the RAM thing. Yeah, I think the pentium will be quite the addition to our network. We have about 100 machines on our WAN and I can't wait to see the rendering speeds with R3. As soon as we get the Pentium I'll let…
Mike, Have you tried creating a helical path in the lofter then using get path from the keyframer. That would give you a spiral path for your camera to follow. I'm not sure what you;re trying to do so this may be competely wrong. If you'd like to give some…
#52318 #Digitizer for 3ds? Message #52455
A digitizer can be very useful if you every have to trace anything such as logos etc. 12×12 is a very good size unless you intend on doing huge drafting projects. We sell lots of 12×12 tablets and have very good results with them. I would suggest using SummaGraphics digitizers.…

David, Thanks for the suggestion but I've already tried this. I feel it's a combination of the other keys tension/bias but just can't seem to get it perfect. Dave Mennenoh
#52429 OS/2 .FLI player Message #52453
Doug, Windows does exactly the same thing – all 256 colors are not available either. It grabs (I believe) 20 colors to use for icons, borders etc. I'm pretty sure OS/2 doesn't take any more colors than Windows does. So an OS/2 version would work perfect. Dave Mennenoh
#52290 #Pharlap error 10118 Message #52452
I;ve been running 3DS on a stacked drive for over two years with absoultely no problems. I use Stacker though. It seems to be a very stable product. Just thought I'd let you know. Dave Mennenoh
PMJI, but it would be _much_ easier to just turn off the shadow casting attributes of the glass. Modify\Object\Attributes – turn off cast shadows. Light will now pass through the glass…. Dave Mennenoh Office Tech.

Don, Hi there. Know what you mean about morphing. It would be a blessing to actually be able to morph between dissimilair (try typing that fast 3 times) objects. SOmeday maybe. But there is a feature allowing you to take an in-between of a morph and put the object into…
