#124862 Nervous MAX Message #125360

Since I have a client that needs a lot of high rez scanning done I usually service the stuff to a place with a drum scanner and I haven't bought one myself yet. I'm leaning towards a slide scanner since they usually provide higher quality scans, take up less space…

I made a typograpical error in my message to you: facemapping is NOT good for walls and such – my type made it sound like facemapping might work but it almost never will unless you want triangular tiles. I have seen the Elastic Reality truck animation. It is quite good!…

Partiy errors are most often memory bound, so it should have nothing to do with what bus your MB is. It's the memory on the board that's probably giving you this problem. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)

I do get quite acrobatic when "acting" out my scenes, but I do it mostly for timing. I find getting physical really helps my sense of timing and I can track down keyframes easier. Floating islands would probably require a trip to the beach with an inner tube . John…

It is not usually good to turn no facemap for tiling walls, unless you want triangular tiles on your wall, and you're sure that the faces that make up your wall are the right size. You'll be much better off using the mapping co-ordinates: for a wall, just make the…

Hi John – haven't typed with you in a little while. I get lazy with story boards often, but I at least do some stick figure type drawings on a napkin before I get going, then I jump around the room pretending to be the objects in my scene .…

I think one of the reasons animators (some) hate storyboarding is because it is the time when you make a lot of really difficult decisions – carving something real out of a bunch of floating neurotransmitters and whatnot. Screenwriters often complain about doing treatments – I think it's the same…

I think it's a Kurta no-no to have a mouse driver tsr loaded along with the Kurta driver. At least it is in my version of the software (perhaps out of date…) John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
#124075 Morphing… Message #124330
Elastic Reality is a 2d morphing and compositing program from ASDG (now called Elastic Reality). It is an SGI application that was ported to MAC (crippled version) and now to Windows. It's pretty much considered the industry standard for film resolution and high end morphing and has some other cools…

You cannot use a tablet reliably in 3DS. Your best bet is to use Kurta's K_CONFIG and go into relative mouse mode for 3DS. It still works beautifully, though you don't get "absolute" resolution. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)

I don't think it would be feasable to put the T2K and PAR in the same box. Talk about peripheral overload… PC's just weren't designed to handle that much . But you'll really be wanting more than one machine to render and work on 3DS/etc… (I use 3 simultaneously) -…

If you want EISA/PCI P90 I would highly suggest going with a big name like Compaq, HP, or even ALR (I checked out their boxes and they're quite nice). The clones are just coming to market and tend to still be in beta. None of the mfg's I spoke with…

#124033 #T2K…I'm Back! Message #124061
I think for multimedia your only choice will be T2K. The MAX and PAR both work at fixed video (NTSC) resolutions, like 720×486 or 756×486 (digital, analog). The T2K works in 640×486 square pixel mode. Also, it directly supports Premier, which sounds like a lot of fun if Adobe ever…

That seems to be a DOS limitation. The only work around I know of seems to be using QEMM386 from Quarterdeck. There is a switch in the device= line that will force xms to see all the memory. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)

I'm glad you're having such a great time with 3DS. I remember one of the happiest days of my life was when I installed my _own_ personal copy of 3DS on my machine and realized I could do this whenever I wanted! Gawd I've turned into a real geek! John…

Actually, the problem isn't in the main feed, it's in the feed from the street into my apartment. They've got the friggin cable wrapped around the house like 10 times or something, and these bozo's are wondering why the signal doesn't look good! I've told them they need to re-do…

Get a sattelite dish. That's your only form of protest to these idiot cable companies. I'm going to get one when I move, because although my cable operator carries a decent variety of channels, the signal quality is really poor, and I've dragged them out on enough service calls to…

I really hopey you pull this off. Like Jamie said, IPAS and Windows stand alone would be ideal. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Nope, the MGA Ultima Plus (I think that's what it's called) does 200mhz. It's the one that gets bundled with the special Nanao monitor. I'm quite certain the refresh rate at 1280 is NOT 200mhz, but the boot up refresh is. I also know it's the highest refresh rate of…

I think Jeff is a pretty die hard UNIX/Xwindows fan, as I am quickly becoming. X Windows is a wonderful environment!!!!!!!! John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
This is a pretty difficult question to answer, particularly since you're in the European market, and I think it's different than here in the US. Here animation services seem to be lumped into the "high end" and "low end" categories, with plenty of room in between being charted by desktop…
#122334 #Targa 2000 vs. PAR Message #122428
So you're telling me I can fill an NTSC screen with the Targa 2000, overscan and all? I was under the impression that this was a square pixel device really set up for computer RGB video stuff rather than NTSC video. At 640×480 it's not really the best resolution, either,…
#122321 3ds3 problems Message #122427
Sounds like you're having a memory conflict. Try stripping your config.sys to files=50 buffers=30 (nothing more), and get rid of all unecessary tsr's and other stuff in autoexec.bat. See if 3DS will run this way – if it does then you can start adding things one by one, always checking…

I've been planning on getting elastic reality, but I'm not sure if I'll get the SGI or the Windoze version. I want to try both and see which fits my needs better. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
While r4 will have an EPS plug in routine for printing on an EPS capable printer from Video Post, right now your best bet is to render to an image file like .tga or .tiff or .gif (if 8 bit) and print from windows software like Photoshop or Photostyler, etc……

I don't think Crystal Dynamics is ready to drown quite yet . John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I've heard of the 28xx, but they are 4mm devices. That will not get you the easiest access to Abekas, which is one of the biggest reasons to get an Exabyte drive. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
Jeff, the MGA Ultima Plus will do 200mhz. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I'm not experiencing the same refresh problem as you (at least I don't THINK I am )… my 3DS display seems flicker free at 1280x1024x16bit. I wonder what's going on here… John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
From: John Tissavary Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 5, 1994 12:51 AM
Yes it'll put out sequential targas. This software has a lot of promise, but right now I think it's still a little raw: I find renders a bit too slow (windoze, I suspect), and I've managed to crash the system quite a bit. Apparently there's a new version I haven't…
One thing to remember with the Exabyte drive is that you DEFINITELY!!!!! want to keep it under service contract as long as you plan on owning it. It is like any other UNIX-land type hardware: if you don't pay the service contract and something goes wrong, you're really up the…
#122050 #128Mb in 3DS R 3 Message #122101
You need to tell DOS (stupid OS) that you've got so and so much memory. I would suggest using QEMM386. There is a statement in the device= line that will tell DOS to see the rest of your memory. John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
I've been using scatter for that type of effect – I agree that lofting and dispersing is the best way to go, although render times can get pretty hairy (sorry for the bad pun =-/ ). John Tissavary (LUNA cie, inc)
TapeDisk with an Exabyte would be slower, for sure, but I can think of many situations where you'd want it. I'm on the verge of ordering it myself. I've had a couple of jobs recently where I've had to render multiple 30 second spots, and do multiple composites, etc… where…
