Well, you're also just now seeing what Snow Panic is in this area, then. Wait until you see the TV ads only those of us in this region see, the ones aimed at Congress rather than the public. Nepotism is only the top of it. Packwood may take a fall…
Well, the schools STILL aren't open here, which makes everybody except my oldest son unhappy, because the school bus route through the valleys and back roads isn't safe yet. With more rain and overnight temps near freezing, we're not sure just when things will get back to normal here. Florida…
Well, I happen to like the barrister/solicitor system, particularly since 90% of all legal matters don't really take a court appearance at all and the last person I'd like defending me for murder would be my tax attorney! Legal costs are horrendous almost everywhere, and backups, particularly in civil courts,…
Ah, yes, I remember the soccer war. And then there are the British soccer fans, who wage their own war game after game, with injuries and sometimes deaths. Sometimes I think we're lucky we have baseball and football here.
Well, I'll give them this–they don't put up speed traps and change things all that much in this state. They don't need to. Just keeping that interstate limit absurdly low is more than sufficient. The last 3 days of the month is when you really have to watch it here;…
There is medical evidence up the kazoo that weight is caused primarily by genes; fat folks were the ones who survived the periodic famines. The largest percentage any of the dozens of research projects has come up with for PSYCHOLOGICAL obesity is about 15%; alas, that's large enough to make…
Well, I assume if you're not printing something at the same time as you're playing something it shouldn't make much difference. I have both my modem and the Seiko label printer on IRQ4 since I can't imagine using them both at the same time. Some BIOS setups differ from others,…
Well, sometimes you get lucky. I've frankly forgotten what the problem was!

Florida got whomped. Lots of folks still stuck in temporary housing from the hurricane got wiped out again, and a couple got killed. Me, I had electricity, phone, satellite dish, and all I needed to work or play right here, so it was no big deal. Kind of hairy driving…

Yes, our son was off from school today and if they can get a schoolbus through the back roads I traveled with 4 wheel drive in search of milk for the baby tonight then sell all your insurance stock. As long as I have electricity, though, I'm in business here,…
Any software that insists on specific IRQs and DMAs should be suspect. IRQ5, for example, is the usual default IRQ for LPT1 and would be impossible to use on my system. Unless you can change all their defaults, this is very sloppy and unfortunate programming.

There aren't any good prices, but the kit you mention, sans speakers, is available as a PAS16 MultiMedia Upgrade Kit from just about every vendor I know. Price is around one grand, give or take a few percentage points, but doesn't vary much. It does not include speakers, but the…
How to .AVI?
Message #43152
Sure. Just take the latest Nautilus and run SETUP. It'll give you two options–install VfW and Install Nautilus. Installing both won't hurt you a bit.
#Hillary – Enough Already
Message #43151
In point of fact Hillary did much this sort of thing in the early days in Arkansas; this was well known and brought out during the campaign. And who's more qualified at what? You need a politician to chair a group. Anybody else is going to have a vested interest…

Obviously you don't spend a lot of time as close to Washington as I do (I was born 40 miles east of it). Congress is totally exempt from the anti-nepotism laws (and even the Civil Rights Act). Spouses, kids, and brother in laws run offices, handle all sorts of business,…

I'm getting some early uneasy tremors from the current goings-on here over creating a national health policy, which the U.S. alone of industrial nations has never had as a universal thing (it exists, but only for the poor and the badly handicapped). Instead of just letting well enough alone and…

The storm is literally the Storm of the Century, but we missed the 110mph winds back here in the hills and just got the snow and ice. Last death toll along the east I heard is 112, and at least that many are still missing. It's a bad one. Considering…

Well, there are fewer exceptions here. Enforcement is actually sort of loose on seat belt laws in this state, but the mere existence of the law has cut down on fatalities by a fair number. Speed limits here are a joke–the most abused and ignored law I know of, but…

There's an LA-based Cantonese language station on Ku band (K-2, the NBC satellite). The ads are hilarious. All of those folks who dream of a Balkanized U.S. (there's a similar movement among many Hawaiians) have never paid any attention to history. There was a little thing called the American Civil…

Other than rigid ideologues, old-timers, and people like Clinton whose whole lives have been directed towards nothing but high office, nobody decent will run. The price is just too high. One hopes that the best people at least will serve in advisory roles if asked rather than distance themselves entirely.…

Hey, as bad as your leaders may be, I remember a Canadian wailing about the terrible choices they have and noting that, considering the choices I've been offered the last couple of times for President, I'd swap.

Well, it's Monday morning and all is closed and everybody is still trapped; roads beyond the main drags are impassable because in between the 26" of snow in two batches (front and back side of the storm) it changed to freezing rain, putting ice under everything. It was the lowest…

Well, part of the problem in Britain is that the only two viable main parties equate to the extreme right wing of the U.S. Republicans and the extreme left wing of the NDP. Labour still sings the Internationale at rallies and calls for "socialist management of the means of production."…

What, and choke Disneyland? Besides, the only Maryland crab house in California is in Westminster, Orange County…. But I'm sure not going to live there, or even visit there for more than a week or so at a time.

Well, we have more lawyers per capita in the U.S. than any other country and they want business. While there are some really nasty features in the British civil system, they do have one thing I wish we had here–you can get creamed in British courts for bringing substantially the…

Yeah; MicroSoft didn't want to pay the royalties that SB compatability requires so they decided to proclaim that the SB was mostly for games and theirs was a business system, etc. They found out very quickly that SB compatability was a big sales point and a major tech support gripe.…

The 16 should give you just about the same options as the SB/Pro did, which allowed DMA sharing with a jumper move.

No, you're missing some minor MIDI hardware and a ton of MIDI software as well. I don't think the software is available as an add-on as such, since it's a bundle, but you can buy the full package from Voyetta if you really have a yen to start recording your…
The basic purpose of my computer is as a tool for me to do my job. All else must be secondary.
Huh? I don't know which Toshiba you have, but the one I have (a Corel OEM model) connects from its output ports to the SoundBlaster Pro aux in stereo port with a cheap Radio Shack cable and to the bus via a stock SCSI cable. Manufacturers make different drives for…
Well, the latest Toshibas are about on a par with the NECs, I think, and there are several other good top of the line CDRs as well. I wouldn't necessarily recommend one over the other, but hooking up a multispin drive to a sound card port essentially negates the double…
England's actually not quite as bad in taxes as Germany but it's getting there. On the other hand, Inland Revenue is renouned as making all other tax collecting agencies in the world look like the quilting society. The nicest comparison I've ever heard for British IR was to the Gestapo.
Does anybody but me think it's silly that a bunch of Congressmen, representatives of the common folks, had to ask what "the people" were saying of Ross Perot, the 17th richest man in the U.S.?
Only the Germans really know coffee in Europe, Paul. The whole country's like Seattle, with McDonalds-like coffee bars with virtually every blend available fresh brewed to order. Me, I take a can of drip and a one-cupper with me when I travel.
I'm surprised about the Philippines and coffee. Americans must not have had as much cultural pollution effect as I thought. Still, outside of the Americas, where coffee is The Drink of just about every country North and South, it can be hard finding good coffee. The Germans have good coffee,…
They just had a TV spot where the head of an insurance company who smokes declared a totally smoke-free environment for the entire building, including his own offices. He goes outside to smoke (and admits that, irritation factor or not, the boss can ALWAYS go outside to smoke when he…
Oh, I think ex-smokers can be expected to be the most militant, since the vast majority of smokers who quit in the past 5-10 years have been pressed to by hassles and social pressure and the like. They really didn't want to, they felt forced to, and, given their druthers,…
Given the same levels of agriculture and technology, the AmerInd civilizations did about the same damage here as Europeans did during comparable periods. It was only from the 1500s on that Europeans learned and showed how to REALLY rape a landscape. However, virtually all modern American archaeology is coming to…
Well, adding gunk to gunk won't really help, but I agree that anybody who mounts an anti-smoking drive in Mexico City should also be prepared to dynamite a lot of industry. Aztecs, of course. Saw a thing on recent Incan discoveries the evening when I was typing and had Inca…
Yes, there's only one of me. Two Jack L. Chalkers would be more than the world could tolerate. The driver Bruce refers to is installed automatically by SETUP and so isn't something I would have thought of. Kind of like saying, "Yes, you can get a directory, but only if…
Bruce, it was my experience from having to install a lot of Windows in the past year that if there is anything multimedia in the line, Setup automatically loads the MCI driver. That's why I didn't mention it.
Well, not the microphone input, but you might try the audio input jack on the SB. I have an SB Pro in the system and my Toshiba audio runs out of the CDR and into the stereo input jack of the SBPro. Works fine. The cable's available at almost any…
Yes, I write books for a living in between online sessions. This is for my Junior Pournelle Merit Badge….
I've never used it, but Speedway is a CDR specific cache buffer. If your CDR buffer is less than 64K as many earlier and OEM models are, you'll see some improvement; if it's already 64K you probably won't notice anything but a loss of the TSR's size in memory. On…
Well, OS/2 2.1 is certainly a rock solid OS that delivers what it promises. Alas, it doesn't support my expensive graphics card and handles a vital SCSI device driver only in a DOS session so I really can't stick with it, and it would be far more of a knockout…
Hmmm…. Interesting. I've had no problem playing a mixed CD ROM/Audio disk with 1.1's Corel Audio, although I don't use it much, and I can't imagine what CorelSCSI would have to do with a file directory listing. I tend to use either dir or the NDW file manager for directories…
For the record, I fully understood why people voted for Reagan but I never did. However, if the thing had been slavish praise of Clinton or a trashing using the vocabulary of the far left of Bush or Reagan I would have reacted the same. There's a place for this.…

I think I agree, but it's not just the P5 delay that's the problem–they only showed them on the Pentium (wonder if anybody will actually use that name?) because they could and it made things look even better. Indeed, most folks won't get a P5 until they have to upgrade,…
The Toshibas and most good CD ROMs are SCSI-2s. They are BEST run off their OWN SCSI card (to which a lot of other neat stuff can also be chained) since SCSI ports on sound cards tend to be crippled and often reduce throughput, making a superfast CD ROM no…
