I'll be looking forward to that. Thanks for posting the information. I'm kind of addicted to those shows and I'm way past the time for my "fix." Neil

The Commodore PCs I think have been reasonably successful, though I don't know any numbers. Commodore Canada had the name licensed out to another company for PCs for more than a year before the bankruptcy. Neil

> I'm hoping that someone will tell me that Lha and Zip don't use LZW – but no one has, yet. Version 1.x of PKzip uses LZW for most files. Version 2.x was introduced a year or two ago, primarily to avoid using LZW and to avoid the licensing that…

I would kind of like to go to that show at Wembley, but I can't be running off to England on short notice. I'm really happy to know that that much support exists, anyway. Neil

Ben, Michael, and Jim, Well, I guess that 20-exhibitor thing is probably just a rumour. It's really a shame that there won't be a show, but I have to assume that there would be some publicity by now (especially to potential exhibitors!) if any show were being planned. In any…

It seems that the World of Commodore Amiga Toronto, the original World of Commodore show, will not be held this year. Apparently, it was going ahead if they could get 20 exhibitors, but they did not succeed. The dealers have always depended on Commodore parachuting in huge quantities of stock…

Dean, The Supra board *can* function as a standard 512K memory expansion and that's how I am using it. The instructions say that *if* you only have 512K of chip RAM, you can enable the extra 512K as a RAM disk. When I put this command into my StartupSequence, it…

I have a MegAChip 2000/500, but I haven't installed it yet. A have a few questions. Is it compatible with the Supra Power PC board. This is a board that goes in the A501 slot and normally gives the Amiga 500 K of extra memory, although there is a total…

I see in the latest issue of AC's Tech that John Kemeny, one of the two authors of True Basic died in December. I wonder if that is part of the reason for the change in plans. Neil

[ continuation ] upgraded to WB 2.1. You're best bet again, is to try to get an older version of Workbench that someone's no longer using. AREXX Too bad there's not much detail on how to use it. When I bought my A500, there wasn't even anything a full list…

BASIC AmigaBasic, as you've heard, is best avoided. HiSoft Basic, which can compile programs, is much better, and is almost 100% compatible with AmigaBasic as well as IBMPC QuickBasic. The only problem you might have is getting programs into ASCII format if they were already saved in AmigaBasic's default file…

Could be a loose Agnes chip. There was a while when the chips were not fitting tightly into the socket. The easy solution that might work if this is the case is to pick your computer up a couple of inches above a hard surface and drop it. I won't…

EA in England lists upgrade prices for all three previous versions (65, 55 and 45 pounds respectively). I called EA in the US about upgrading from DP2 and they want $90 + $7 shipping if I remember accurately. Ads in this months AmigaWorld are offering DP4 for $120, $109, $100,…

IFF is not object-oriented. If you want to change a PDraw clip into an IFF, I understand there is a utility in the PDraw clip art volume(s) which will do this. This way the clip art itself is also useable by programs that take IFF bitmapped art. You're correct that…

I think there are several programs running on the IBM that translate PCX to GIF (maybe even PCX to IFF). Possibly your best bet would be to get a friend with a PC to do the conversion. GO GRAPHSUPPORT for the IBM programs. Neil

There IS actually a sensible explanation as to why phoning farther away places can cost less (like nothing) than close ones. Phone wires don't lead directly from each area to each other area. It would take a lot of redundant wire. Instead your calls go into a "hub" and lines…

I recently had a read/write error with SA4Djr also, but with a floppy disk. When I checked the disk with DiskDoctor, I found that it actually did have a read/write error. I would suggest that you find some method of checking every sector on your hard disk. Neil

It seems that a lot of 1010 disk drives do not pass through the signals. My 1020 only works when connected directly to the Amiga (or to another 1020). I have had to resort to connecting the 1010 to the 1020, so the 5-1/4" is DF1: and the 3-1/2" is…

I think this has to do with whether or not the file contains a MacBinary header. MacView seems to be picky in this repect. These headers are usually added when a Mac program is uploaded. Some Amiga and IBM programs expect it to be there, some don't. It's a matter…

A man in one of the large booths said they's only had about half the crowd of last year; at least they only used half as many bags as last year. Commodore 64/128 software seemed noticeably less common than at previous shows. The "world premiere" of New-Tek's demo reel 3…

A new program is now available for downloading Adobe fonts to Adobelicenced postscript printers. It's called PSFont and it was for sale everywhere at the World of Commodore in Toronto. Fantavision doesn't use anim files at all. Fantavison works with "structured objects." When you save a Fantavision file, it contains descriptions of the outlines of objects and whether they are filled. When you reload the file, it reconstructs the picture from these outline descriptions. Moving points on the outline is…

With the IBM version, you get a disk with a printer driver to dump a screen to the printer. This isn't necessary with the Amiga version, since Okimate 20 support is included with Workbench, but I think you may get a disk with sample pictures anyway. In the Amiga version,…

standard "Centronics-type" connectors. Just ask your Amiga dealer for a cable to hook up to that. (Control codes for spacing etc. could be trickier, but can be done.)
