#PCWeek article Message #44078
From: Steve Liberty CDROM Forum · General March 25, 1993 11:22 AM
There was a short article in PCWeek about a company that will be publishing a CDROM containing demos of upto 150 programs. You will be able to call the various software companies, pay by credit card, and get an unlock code for their program. The article mentioned the subscription for…

#36465 The ANimals Message #36468

I think that the alphabetical animal listing should have been available in two ways. It is currently available in an order based on some zoological names, but the average Joe doesn't know those. There should also have been a listing based upon common names, like monkeys, followed by each member…

I don't have any SCSI hard drives on my system yet (I will soon though), but I use the XM3301b with the Adaptec 1542b by using the ASPI driver from Adaptec, and the CDROM driver from CorelSCSI. It works like a charm. Steve

One example of a compatibility problem is Windows NT. While it will work with the Future Domain 850, it only works on IRQ5. The Adaptec 1542b works on any IRQ under NT. Other incompatibilities are bound to exist now, or down the road. As for performance, with a hard disk…

I bought my XM 3301B for $369 or $379 (I forget which). It was a very good price at the time, so $400 isn't bad. But get a real good controller. For the sake of compatibility, it will make all of the difference in the world. I bought the Adaptec…

When I called Toshiba, they told me taht the 3301 is a single session drive, but that for $100 they would upgrade it to multi-session. The Corel drivers can handle the single session stuff today. Steve

I seem to have made a good choice with the Toshiba though. They can even upgrade the roms to allow multi-session photo CD. While it is true that the transfer rate is only 150K, this is about the only drawback I can see on this drive at this time. And…

There must be some mistake. I have a Toshiba 3301b, not a NEC drive. I wonder if the same is true of the Toshiba? Steve

The Toshiba 3301b is SCSI-2, and on the NT support list. You might want to go over to the WINNT forum and download the list of supported hardware from the library. One very important thing is the SCSI controller. I have the Adaptec 1542b, which is also on the supported…

When I spoke to Corel they didn't mention any need to remove the /XA switch in order to read normal disks. I will have to check that out. Steve

Yes, the XM-3301B is SCSI-2, and there are 3301A's also (B – internal, A – external). This drive is 325ms, 64K buffer, XA , 150KB. This makes it slower than the NEC, and faster than the Sony. Of course, the Nec is almost impossible to get right now – everyone…
