Amiga Users in Russia
Message #57558
Nancy: We (VRLI) were in contact with several Amiga Users in Moscow. The thread of contact has been fragile, as the mails have not proven to be very reliable into and out of what used to be the Soviet Union. I'll ask my brother in the morning if he has…
John: Try contacting Scan Optics, who bought Pertec a few years back. The last telephone number I have on them is (714) 863-7580. They've moved since I worked there, but only a short distance, and I think they kept the phone numbers. Clint
John: Try calling our tech support entity, Jean. We just got a CD-ROM and at least one of the Mars disks. I'm not working directly on our CD project, so I don't know exactly what we have, but Jean does. Our tech number is (805) 237-2311, and he's usually on…
Steve: Some of the Lyapunov's and Mandelbrot's make interesting patterns too. Try skywriting too. Clint
Pete: The clouds try to stay at least 500 meters above the highest point on the landscape. There are several solutions: 1) Try to lower the cloud elevations. 2) Load the largest landscape area you can. If you are using a small landscape, Enlarge it to fill the landscape area.…
That's true. Just wait and see…
Nick: I think a JPEG of that image is already over in AmigaArts. That was done with my 3000 when I had only 5 megs in it. It could conceivably be done on a 3 meg machine. At 3 megs you can do Small scapes up to 768x484x24bits. At 10…
Actually, you can combine any of the Small scapes, but they won't join together like the "X" scapes will. You'll get some very straight cliffs where two scapes meet at different altitudes.
Nick: Look at the leftmost menu on VistaPro 2.0. There is a Menu Item called Landscape Size. Small landscapes are 258 x 258 data points, and are the size you are used to playing with in earlier versions of VistaPro and Vista. Large is 514×514 data points, and can be…
Mark: I think it was, but I'm going to have to get accounting to tell me where we bought it so I can send it out for repair. Clint
Mark: Unfortunately, I've got to get my DAT repaired. I think the drive bay it's in gets too much heat from the drive below. It's currently read-only, won't let me write to it. Clint
Michael: That's OK. With my memory as bad as it is, I was worried that I'd completely spaced a conversation. It was a relief to know it was your mistake and not mine. Clint
Mark: We are definitely looking into CD. For a small company like we are, the equipment costs for doing CD work are a bit steep, but once the investment is made, making new CD's is quite reasonable. Let me know when you get your modem. As soon as they are…
Michael: Did this get directed to the wrong person or am I just totally lost? I'll check back in the previous messages and see if I can figure out how we got here. I know little to nothing about authoring systems. Clint
Mark: I wish we could produce pics like that on a 1 meg system. Actually I think I got the computer 'bug' back when I was 7 reading some early 50's pamphlets describing one of the big vacuum tube computers, I can't remember which one anymore. I decided I wanted…
Don: No stock, no royalties. I guess I gotta keep working for a living. (If you call playing with VistaPro all day long, work! ) Clint
Mark: I remember paying $75 each for 256×4 bit static rams back when I got my Altair in 1975. Now 1 meg x 8 SIMM's are $39.95. That's 8192 times the memory for 53% of the price. I wish other price changes were as friendly. We try to give the…
Mark: We're not immune to the problem ourselves. I wanted to do a 1536x968x24 bit image rendered from a Large landscape, and my 10 meg 3000 couldn't cut it. I had to settle for a mere 1024x768x24. Clint
Don: No, we don't own stock in the memory companies, but at Ami-Expo we found ourselves placed directly across the aisle from Memory World. Unfortunately high-end graphics tends to eat memory like crazy, and so does 'reality simulation'. We have trimmed things now though so that at the lowest resolution…
Richard: It was probably an error on our part as orders have been coming in surges and sometimes a paperclip works its way loose. Email me the correct contents of your order and I will do a search and find out what happened, as well as making sure your order…
Denny, that would be what we would have in mind, but we would include Khalid's on the disk as the 'default' unless it were removed, in which case ASL would become the default. Khalid's has some features that lend themselves quite nicely to the type of directory manipulation that users…
Jeff: Definitely the right stuff! Clint
Looks like you're having fun!
Art: There are two ways to approach that. First would be to save the landscape or a portion of it as a Turbo Silver object and use TS or Imagine to render the last few frames, or you could turn off the building (reload the landscape) and keep rendering in…
Doug: Glad you like it! Clint
Robert: We are looking into using the ASL and/or Khalid's kd_freq as a file requester for all file i/o. This would allow such defaults as you are asking for. Clint
Jeff: Hope you get to take your Amiga along. That way at least you can render images of land even if you can be there in person. Have a good tour! Clint
Tony: You can experiment with the cliffs from Mons.dem to get the technique right. I've found several different methods can generate satisfactory results. My best so far has been: 1> Set Large topo region 2> load Devil's Tower 3> Enlarge until you have a filled large landscape 4> Repeated Fractalize(1),…
Homer: Actually I have been thinking along the line of a VANIM editor to supliment the Viewer, but haven't gotten very far along that path yet. A case of too many projects and too little time and manpower. The scripting is also being looked at. We haven't settled on a…
Don: Due to John's last minute trip to Sri Lanka, several of the last minute features have somewhat sparse documentation. I'm attempting to give tips where the docs are short here on CIS, and Jean has been doing likewise on our BBS. Feel free to ask any of the 'secrets'…
Mark: The Firecracker version writes directly into the Firecracker's memory giving you a 'view as you render' display. Normally the rendering is done to a 24 bit buffer and translated into screen format after the entire image has been rendered. Clint
Dan: Glad you like them. You actually were quite lucky and ordered after we had finally caught up with our backlog. Some of our customers had to be patient for nearly a month. We printed a years supply of VP2 manuals and have used 3/4 of them in the first…
Mark: For roads and houses, select a landscape, do a Col->IFF (it will run through the color cycle), take that IFF image into a non-ham paint program, and using colors 28-31 (last 4 on the palette) place dots where you would like buildings to be. Using color 7 (8th color…
Antonio: I've been playing with Devil's Tower this weekend. The closest I can get using only Large landscapes is to initialize a Large topo space, load Devil's Tower, set Rough to about 250, Enlarge (Interpolate, not as I had said earlier), Fractalize at '1', Enlarge, Enlarge, Enlarge, reset the Rough…
Antonio: You'd be amazed at what Gouraud Shading does when combined with Texture. You get alot of detail while the polygon boundries disappear. I think that John chose "Duplicate" rather than "Interpolate" when using the Enlarge function. That would give the large 'fractures' in the rock face. Clint
Linda: 1) C 2) C 3) B 4) A 5) A,C,D,E,G,H 6) A,C,D Clint
Mark: We're quite happy that you are pleased with VistaPro2. I'll pass your comments along to John. He'll be happy to know that all of his late nights went to good purpose. Just wait until you can see it on a 24 bit display. Clint
I'll pass that suggestion on to John. Pausing while rendering might be pretty difficult, but pausing between images shouldn't be too hard.
Tony: I assume that you mean the Devil's Tower picture on the back of the box. John Hinkley (author of VistaPro) created that image, and I will detail as close as I can his description of what he did. First he set his Landscape Size to Huge, and loaded the…
VISTAPRO 2.0 SCREEN BUG
Message #51458
David: Great! Hope you have loads of fun with VistaPro! Clint
David: You will need a Workbench disk to run VistaPro from floppy. There is just a skeleton Workbench (without fonts) on the VP disk. You should boot from your regular Workbench and then insert the unarchived VistaPro disk into either DF0: or DF1:. If you have any problems, give Jean…
David: Sounds like a font problem. I think VistaPro uses the standard system font, though I'll have to check with John to be certain. Which version of AmigaDOS are you running?
VistaPro directly supports the Firecracker24, DCTV and HAM-E. Currently all of the other 24 bit boards are indirectly accessed via IFF24 files.
Homer: MakePath will be updated, but I can't put a date on it. You can save out the Large and Huge maps with VistaPro, and MakePath will load these landscapes. So currently if you want to do a flyover of a large area, Load Multiple DEM's into VistaPro and Save…
Roy: We'll definitely be looking into all of the 24 bit options for 3.0. Hopefully there will be steps taken by C= and the hardware manufacturers in the area of device independent graphics so we won't need seperate drivers for 13 different boards. Clint
Scott: Why am I not surprised? Clint
Keith: What lib number is that this week? Or does it matter. Clint
Alex: There are several errors in the script, due to some last minute changes as we were getting the disks ready. I will email you corrected scripts, and will post them somewhere (where does one post a VistaPro script?) as soon as I can figure out where they belong. Clint
Mark: You are very welcome! I hope you have alot of fun with VistaPro. Natural Graphics has given us a tough fight every step of the way. Brett is a very talented programmer. I expect we'll be competing for quite some time. Clint
