#SB Pro working yet? Message #30199
From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · Multimedia November 4, 1992 3:03 AM
Well! That would explain the confusion between the SB and SB Pro and the line-in jacks. It explains a lot about Michael's comments. Thanks for the info. -Keith.

Yep! Saw it a week ago. Is the problem still there? -Keith.
From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · DOS, Windows, OS/2 November 4, 1992 3:03 AM
It's possible about the drive being a Sony, but doubtful. The older DAK BSR drives were Sony. Sony drives use the caddy system. I don't think Sony has ever produced a caddyless system..I could be very wrong too! -Keith.

Chris, I'm going to have a little more info to make and educated guess. First, I believe the Sherlock CDROM game is DOS based, right? Are you trying to run it under Windows? Does the SB Pro produce system sounds and play .MID files under Windows as its supposed to?…
#28626 #Sony 535 Drivers Message #28676
From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware October 16, 1992 12:52 PM
David, you've found the correct forum for anything having to do with CDROM. You've piqued my interest in the mention of those drivers. Can you tell me if you got your drive direct from Sony and whether these drivers are Sony supplied. Or is the drive and drivers bundled from…

Clarke, I would like to know on what basis is your claim of incorrect impedance of the Line-In jack for CDROM audio is made. I don't see any specific specifications of impedances for any of the inputs on the SB Pro except for a text mention that the microphone should…

Jeff, I don't know why Sony's Optical Division is the company's best-kept secret…but it is. There are some very knowledgeable people at that number but they don't want to let the world know of them. Glad to help out. Cheers, Keith.

Hi Michael, OK let's see if we can get the hardware aspect of this dilemma out of the way. I do believe if I remember right that the Mammals disk has both Yellow and Red Book audio. Red book audio is nothing more than digitally recorded audio that has been…

Michael, I have the same arrangement as you and all CD's work fine. Your statement about how you're powering the speakers is vague though. Are you driving the speakers from the SB Pro's internal speaker output? Or are you using self-powered speakers and still tapping off the front panel headphone…

No, I wasn't affronted Reese. Besides, sometimes, unnecessary explanations are beneficial for all the 'lurkers'and you can't really tell about the technical expertise of an online persona unless you've conversed before or read a lot of their threads. Thanks for the tip on the Speedway demo. Now I have another…

Emilio, if you can find the 7/23/91 version of MSCDEX v. 2.21, it is the one that works with Win 3.1 and the LL. MS acknowledged that both recent versions of 2.21 on their MM BBS and CIS were hosed. Cheers, Keith.

From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · Drives/Hardware March 14, 1992 11:59 PM
Dennis the Sony CDU-541 (internal) and CDU-7211 (external) are fully MPC compatible and are robust enough for future MPC spec growth. They are SCSI interfaces. Don't know anything about the Mitsubishi drive, though it sounds intriguing. Buffer size is no guarantee that a drive is MPC compatible, it depends on…

Robert, the 7205 works quite well with the MME. The 7205 has an 8K buffer and theoretically the MPC standard requires a 64K buffer, however in real life I and others have had no troubles playing Multimedia disks on the 7205. I presently use a SB Pro sound card with…

No, the MM version has much more extensive audio and video selections. If you do a search on CDROM, and double-click on the word for example, you get a audio/video presentation on how CDROM works. The Compton's Family Encyclopedia shipped with the LL is not the Multimedia version.

Robert, Windows with Multimedia Extentions are only available from manufacturers who offer the MPC upgrade kits. If you have a MPC sound card already, then contact your card manufacturer and order the Extensions. The MME comes on a CDROM and usually offers to upgrade your version of Windows to 3.00a…

I purchased my Sony LL for $519 from CDW in Chicago. Yes, the bundling is done by Sony and as such does not include the multimedia versions of MS Bookshelf nor of Comptons Encyclopedia. Mixed-Up Mother Goose is the English only version, not the multi-lingual version. The drive is the…

From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · General January 19, 1992 2:13 PM
Ran, if you use the /V switch on MSCDEX, it will report the firmware ID of the drive its addressing. It reports the Sony CDU-6201 as the CDU-531 and the Sony CDU-7205 as the CDU-535. Thus, the 6201/7205 's are just the 531/535 dumped into a case for the external…

From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · General January 19, 1992 2:13 PM
I suspect you are right Nelson. If Sony has followed a logical numerical progression in their drive evolution, then the 541 comes after the 535 (7205 external), which came after the 531 (6201 external). Keith.

From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · General January 19, 1992 2:13 PM
Ok, Ran. Yes, I would hope it is possible to accomodate a fix in the software driver and not in hardware. Still the cost of a new interface board shouldn't be prohibitive, it's mostly a one chip VLSI board. I read in another thread of some one's experience using a…
From: Keith E. Myers CDROM Forum · General January 19, 1992 2:13 PM
Sorry, Alex, that is not possible. The 541 uses a true 50 pin SCSI-1 interface card and the 535 uses the 40 pin Sony Hi-Speed Serial Interface card ( a proprietary form of SCSI ). Unless someone comes up with an adapter card to convert between the two, your only…

Ran, what version of the LL did you get that provided you with BOTH the Toolworks (U.S.& World) atlases? Mine just has the World Atlas. Also, I think the 7205 has an auto-configuring power supply that will handle any voltage from 100-200 VAC 50-60 Hz as per the 7211 spec…

This is an addendum to my post to Ross. The CDU-541 as far as I can tell now has a true SCSI bus interface and as such requires a true SCSI adapter. The 6201/7205 use the Sony Hi-Speed Serial Bus, which is a modified SCSI bus adapter. Transplantation of the…
