Dan, I don't know if GPFax will work under 1.3 or not… but that's the one you should probably check out. It is available for both class 1 & 2 modems, and any distributor that sells it will be able to tell you the minimum system requirements.
Mark, What modem are you using? Does it support error correction, and if so, do you have it turned on (via your initia;ization string)?

Hilary, You can use just about any scsi tape drive. I have an Archive Viper on my A3000. QuarterBack and AmiBack both support backups to tape drives.
