If I remember correctly, some versions of the ASDG Abekas Driver will enable/disable compression on the fly so if you have an 8505 you get to choose. Jason ERI
Abekas/Exabyte WinNT
Message #175435
Development of an NT version of the ASDG Abekas Drivers is nearly complete…if you are interested is acquiring this product please email me the following information: Name Company (if any) Address Telephone Number Which type of Exabyte tape drive you own Which type of NT you want the driver for…
James, In the old(er) days I might be able to answer your question (about upgrade policy from the Windows Abekas Driver to the NT Abekas Driver). But since Elastic Reality was acquired by Avid Technology, such decisions have moved off to the Boston area…so I don't know the answer. Jason…
Exabyte Drivers?
Message #169941
ER's Abekas Drivers are being worked on as I type this to operate under NT. NT's SCSI tape support has been making it very difficult for us to complete this task, but we're nearly through bypassing most of Microsoft's bugs. Our NT Abekas Tape module will also be made available…
Dennis, Tis true…Elastic Reality Inc. has merged with Avid Technologies. We're all really excited by the prospect of what we're going to achieve together and looking forward to what the future holds. Jason ERI tech support

>before it's too late… We received our issue in the mail already. Jason
Ken, True, we're vector based. I don't know the details, but presumably our programmers do. After all, they make the BIG bucks 🙂 Jason Makes little tiny bucks
#EDITORS CHOICE!
Message #4300
Hi Everyone! The February issue of Computer Graphics World and named Elastic Reality the Editor's Choice for the Best Rendering and Special Effects product of 1994. On behalf of everyone at ERI, we'd like to thank the Editors at CGW and our users for recognizing our work in this way.…
FUTURE ER SIGHTINGS!
Message #4299
Hi Everyone! Sneak Preview Time!!! I was given word yesterday that three movies slated for near-term release have featured Elastic Reality produced effects… These are (in no particular order): Outpost, The Hunted, and Last Gasp. Last Gasp, I'm told, has Robert Patrick in it. I don't know about the rest.…
Ben, You said: (b) as sure as we can be that we can ship within 30 days. 30 days is the time that we have, by law, to ship the product from the time we charge the card. FYI… I remember reading that the acceptable window length was lengthened to…
Mei-Tien, A magic wand is often difficult to master. Just ask Mickey Mouse 🙂 We are none-the-less looking at this and other techniques for making shape creation even easier. I don't have more info on this but I do know the R&D guys are hard at work on something. Jason…
Bri, Thank you very much. Elastic Reality for Windows owes a great deal to the skill of the programmers who worked on it, both the Windows specific team and the platform independent team. It owes a lot to our technical support staff and our beta testers who really beat the…
Rico, Aw shucks! (blushing) Advanced editing features are slated for future releases..our SGI product has the ones you mentioned, and more. Jason ERI Praise Acceptence Squad
Ken, True, very true. Both types of customers are very important to us. And, each has benefited from the input of the other. We consider ourselves very lucky to see both sides of the industry. And, we're proud of the fact that products like ours are helping to bring about…
Sam, Grainy output could be coming from several places. 1) the video compressor you're using is likely the largest culpret. Many of them compress video by discarding individual pixel's values to create blocks of the same color which compress better. The cinepak and indeo encoders (at their highest quality settings)…
Andrew, The address in the manual will be fine. We'll look forward to receiving the script! Jason ERI Congressional Baseball Team
Hi, Just happened to pop by…and saw the tail end of this thread. Elastic Reality does indeed have a forum here on CIS…GO ELASTIC will get you there. It's in ANVENA. Thank you for the kind words, and if there's any questions you folks might have, I'll try to pop…
(part 2 of the making of the stargate mask effects) The action was filmed twice. Once with the bad guy wearing the fully extended helmet, and once with the bad guy not wearing the helmet. The fight scenes were planned and choreographed so that the motion would be similar in…
Rico, The director of Stargate wanted to achieve a mechanical look to the helmet effect…standard morphing as it existed early last year could not create this effect. The special effects crew at Kleiser-Walczak Construction Company considered using 3D to create the effect, which in many ways was similar to the…
Ken, I have seen the trueSpace user interface…lots and lots of icons. There are plenty of dialogs too though they often masquerade (I have never ever had to spell that word before, and probably I still haven't) as floating palettes. I'll send email to the programmers to have a look…
Mei-Tien, The Coca Cola commercial in which the Sun is thirsty and the earth is dry, the sun has a Coke and the earth turns green, is an example of cartoon style tweening done in ER. If you're looking for a worked example (including a project) of cartoon style tweening,…
Andrew, Tech support would love a script, and it would put us in a better position to help should you need any tips from us. If you can spare a copy, please mail one out – and autograph it too in anticipation of you going on to much bigger and…
If you can Email me a phone number for Mr. Vreeland, I'll try and make it happen. Jason Hey Alma, Whatsamatta?
Bri, I think you're right. It ought to be where all the other dialog opening menu commands are. I will pass this on to the keeper of the List. I checked with the programmers about why it's in the FILE menu, they felt it was appropriate to keep the PROJECT…
Mei-Tien, Shape importing from other programs is something the programmers are said to be interested in. (Us tech support dweebs sometimes have to gleen such things from the scuttlebut since the hallowed halls of engineering are reserved for the immortals, whack! ok ok back to our oars! stroke! stroke! stroke!)…
Andrew, Congrats on the new product! Jason ERI Technical Abolitionist
Andrew, Please let us know if there's anything we can do to help. Also, we'd be happy to give your video whatever boost in circulation our resources can provide. Jason Film…it's more than a picture
Chris, The Art Center School of Design is supposed to be setting up ER classes. Give them a buzz. Er, make that Mark. Jason Multiple Personality Disorder: If at first you don't succeed, Hi I'm Frank.
Hi Bri, Chris answered your second question but in his haste forgot your first. You get back into the sequence editor by selecting FILE/EDIT. The EDIT menu refers to the standard cut/copy/paste stuff relating to shapes, the FILE/EDIT command refers to editing the images comprising the effect in the sequence…
Dean, I have a question for all field rendering types…is field rendering on output sufficient (assuming full frame input) or is field rendered input also needed? Please respond by email ONLY. Jason Takes his cloak and dagger seriously
Mike, I think the only differences between 1.0 and 1.1 is that AVI load and save was made more reliable, support for AVI under Windows NT was added, and the promised FLC loaders and savers were added. All of these things can be had by downing the hiipup.zip file here…
Mike, Indeed there is. ER's internals are field happy…we simply have to make the input/output routines speak fields. For now, you can specify twice the number of frames you want as output (if you're working on still projects) or load your input frames on twos (if you're working on moving…
Zone, You betcha. Let us know if there's anything else we can help you with. Jason Wears white cowboy hat so he must be a good guy
Elastic Reality has been used a great deal for making tweens for animation. Just ask the belly dancing Ritz(r) crackers or the Coke(r) sun :-). You should take key frames from your animation source, probably twice a second (assuming you working with 24 or 30 frame frame rates). Load the…
Tweening in ER is not a very difficult process at all. Assuming you are using a motion sequence, all you need to do is adjust the shape's posittion relative to the motion in a given frame and, whala..you have created a key frame and ER is good enough that is…
Mei-Tien, All in a day's work. All in a day's work. Jason Pixel Pixie
Bob, Give us a few days yet. The boss is close to ironing things out with the folks over at in:sync so that razor customers will get some goodies. Jason Intellectual Body Guard
Zone (may I call you Zone? I prefer a first name basis 🙂 First a short description of the crossing edge problem: The control information you create (to tell ER what to do with your pixels) is the shapes you draw. When two shapes on the same roll cross you're…
Oh Chris! While you're up?
Mei-Tien, It isn't only Media Player you need to worry about. Each of the different codecs you might use also have their own size quirks. Most of them will simply not go beyond 320 by 240 and give any reasonable error message about why they're screwing up. They simply screw…
Dean, TransJammer (the Razor and Premiere plug-in) has been highly optimized since the ER 1.0 release. In fact, its effects now run 2 to 6 times faster within the new TransJammer plug-in than they do in the ER 1.0. So, a lot of work has gone on in the intervening…
Mea Culpa, I could swear I copied Brendan's messages to our mail box! Brendan – My Apologies – Chris – could you send Brendan a copy of the Macintosh tutorial tape? Thanks! Jason ERI Dunce Stool Sitting Squad
TransJammer Volume 1 is a suite of 100 killer transitional effects which can be used in Adobe Premiere (on the Macintosh). The Windows version can be used in in:sync's Razor Pro and in Adobe Premiere. Each of the 100 (actually slightly more than 100) effects has up to 8 variations,…
Elastic Reality for Windows will do this (and compositing, animation, warping, morphing, and other format conversions). Jason ERI Topiary Department
In what oder did you install the two program? i.e which one got installed first? Chris Edgin ERI tech.
That IS stange (:-/ Have you attempted to reinstall and do you also have ADPro? Chris Edgin ERI tech.
Well, I cannot say woth any certainty what might me cause the 68k version to complain about chip memory when the 020 version does not. I will havce to confer w/ the programmers to get any sort of answer about that. Chris edgin ERI tech.
I have to concur. The correct choice of video compression coupled with the proper output resllution make all the difference. Keep your output at 160×120 or 320×240 and all the compressors should work ok but many of them will choke on 640×480 or bizzare resloutions like 423×278 (or whatever). Chris…
Actually, the Mac Transjammer is the one that will come w/ the 100 or so effects. Unfortunately, we found that little bug too late to stick it in the readme but that has been changed now anyway. Sorry for the inconveinence. Chris edgin ERI Tech.
