As far as your memory problems go, you'll need to give us more info:
machine type, config.sys and autoexec contents, etc.
When you say you want to use materials from the CD, realize that there
really aren't any materials on the CD, just maps. To make one a
"material", you need to create a material in the ME by using the
image in question as a texture/bump/opacity/etc. map and then add it
to a material library (MLI) in order to assign it to an object.
"Materials" per se, only exist in MLI's and in mesh files (you can
"grab" materials used in the sample scenes on the CD by loading the
scene and "Get From Scene"ing in the ME and then saving them to an
MLI).
As for scaling, you need to create a selection set of the thing(s) you want to
scale and then do so with the SELECTED button on. Or, if the item(s) you want
to scale are already assigned a unique color, you can use that color as a
selection set. Remember to use the LOCAL AXIS button!
