#Render Stop/Continue
15 messages in this thread
Hi,
I'm haveing trouble stoping a render then later continuing with it. I
read awhile back that all I had to do is press ESC and save the project, then
quit the program. When I want to continue just load the project, render all
and it should continue where it left off. Do I have this right?
I have a very large project going here after 48 hours I needed to do
somthing else so I did the above. When I came back to it and tried to render
where I left off it started at frame 0. I guess I should have tested this
first but is there anything I can do to save this mess and how do I properly do
this???
BTW: I have version 1.0 of 3DS.

Andy,
In the Render Animation dialog box in the Keyframer, you have to push the range
button, then enter the appropriate next file number. Then, in the Save Render
File dialog box, I usually hit the last rendered file and the plus button, but
I suppose you should type in the appropriate file name and number and press ok.
And of course, all this information is covered in the manual under Keyframer.
<g> Good Luck.

Roger,
I did that before I asked the question on how to do this. What I got
was FILE.FLI (The first half) FILE01.FLI (The second half) not FILE01.FLI both
halfs.
Are you sure that you use the next file number or next frame for the
first part of your description? I think you mean frame number.
Here is the way I tried to do it. After rendering half of the project
(66 frames) I hit ESC and save the project then quit. Came back to 3DS loaded
project picked renderer/render set range to 67 – 150 picked file and the +. Of
course it started at the right place but did not combine the two. Then I look
at a message that was here awhile back that said to use all as the range so I
tried that but it didn't work. I have not save the project since the first
session and the FILE.FLI is untouched since then. What I'm doing wrong????
If I chouse the wrong frame to continue at will that stop it from
working properly or just skip/add frames that should be there? I used aaplay
to double check how many frames there is, it goes back to 0 after frame 66 so
67 should be where I continue from right.
In great need of some more help Andy
Andy,
Oh,oh! The technique I gave you would be for rendering to Targa for use with a
single frame animation system. Oops. Sorry. What you need to do is to take
the 2 flics into Animator Pro and join them together. Also, what you should do
is make a custom palette out of your first flic and load that for rendering
your second, so that you don't get an annoying flash when two distinctly
different palettes collide. Does this help?
Roger D.
Roger,
That explains it but, doesn't help. I don't have Animator Pro. Is
there anouther way like maybe a cheap Sharware program that will merge the FLI
files? Or is there a way to get the file format of a FLI so I could write my
own merge program?
Thanks Andy
Andy,
OK, Here's a technique that I just tested out that worked for me. Go into
Video Post and create 2 entries in the queue. Set the number of total frames
to your total frame number. Then edit the first queue entry-choose
bitmap-choose your .fli and say ok. Then set the number of frames for that
entry to the same number as your .fli has. Next, adjust the second entry in
the same way for the remainder (second part) of your .fli. Your action on this
one is going to have to start where it ended in your previous animation. And
if you're using background, you'll have to make an additional queue entry for
that. I would render this with medium palette. That should work for you. It
does accomplish what you're trying to do. Good luck.
Roger D.
Roger,
>>OK, Here's a technique that I just tested out that worked for me. Go into

I'd do this if I could find Video Post and it's queue! 3DS is new to
me and I haven't learned that much about it yet. Can you explain more? I don't
see any menu called Video Post and I won't get my manual back for about a week.
I've already fix this fli by redering it all over again but, this project is 20
fli's back to back and each fli take's to long to render all at once. I plan
to buy Animator Pro but it won't be till after I finish this project.
Andy
Andy,
Sounds like you must be using v.1 of 3DStudio? If you are, there is no video
post. If you're going to be spending money on anything, I'd recommend your
upgrading to version 2.01a of 3DStudio. More than that I don't know what to
tell you, other than people are real touchy about giving advice to those who
have misplaced their manuals. My advice at this point can only be get r.2 and
enjoy the tutorials. They're lots of fun…seriously.
Roger D.
Roger,
Thanks anyway, I didn't misplace my manuals I had to send the whole
package to Autodesk. I bought and paid for version 2.01a but got version 1.0
only a month ago. Autodesk said they would do what they could for me. I'm
hopeing that means 2.01a. Anyway I sent them every thing excect the installed
version on my hard drive.

I don't think writing your own FLI player is called for at this point! However,
I can't think of a way around the palette manipulations (to avoid the flash)
unless you can modify the animations, which means having AAPro! You could
structure your animations so a fade to black transition would appear a normal
part of the flic, if you have to do this 2 part thing again. This could help
control the flash.
Check out the players here (Windows-based AAWIN, as well as AAPLHI), as well as
FLILIB and FLCSPC for info on the FLIC formats. AAPLHI/AAWIN would allow you
to run FLIC 1 and FLIC 2 sequentially, so as to appear as one flic.
Good luck
Nik
Hi,
This doesn't help for each fli but the fading sounds interesting
between fli's. There will be 20 fli's run back to back, how do I fade between
these? I'll still have to figure a way around the problem of combinding two
fli's. It also sounds like I must find a way around the palette problem
because all 20 fli's are the same objects and I don't want to fade for ever
one. There is just a black background, does that help?
You might be woundering why I'm doing what I'm trying to do. This
project I estmate being 20Megs of fli and it has to be transfered to other
computers on floppy disks, so I'm tring to build 1meg fli to be run back to
back.
To ask anouther quesstion about a differant project the dark wood inlay when
assigned to a object is just white not the nice mat it's supose to be, what am
I doing wrong?
Andy
Andy,
I suggest you check your lighting (ambient may be too high) and make sure you
have applied mapping co-ordinates, and that mapping is on when you render.
Secondly, why would you have to send the whole package back – this sounds
suspect, you only need to send disk #1 or the title page of your manual in all
circumstances I've heard of. You've got to do the tutorials, also, you won't
get far without them. The forum is good but no substitute for tutorials and
practice – we can't take the place of that <g>.
Hi,
It's set up just like you pointed out, I've checked other mat and have
the same problem with some of them that use a refection or texture map but not
all of them. I've set it as the manual says to but it's looks like it was done
in preview not renderer. I have no way to check the maps I'm woundering now if
maybe something happen to them. Is there any program that will view CEL files?
>>Secondly, why would you have to send the whole package back<<
I can't explain much about it except Adesk wanted it all. A clue to
what this is about was talked about here about a month ago having to do with a
disonest dealer. Adesk said if I sent the thing to them they would take care
of me and the dealer. They wouldn't tell me what they where going to do for
me, I hopeing they send me back ver 2.01 or a refund or if nothing else just
send me back ver 1.0 and fix this dealer from doing what he did to someone
else.
Andy
Andy,
Render/view/image/.cel
Roger D.
Hi,
Roger you must be thinking about version > 1.0 because under render the
only choice is which viewport not view/image and the only place you can choose
.cel is the mats!
Thanks anyway Andy
