A very humble request…

Having been laid off almost a year ago, my financial resources are running
right out the bottom, yet I still am extraordinarily eager to buy a copy of 3-D
Studio v. 2. There's no conceivable way that I can afford $2995, but I want to
proceed legitimately and have checked with Autodesk Customer Service re the
following approach:
If I can find anyone who bought 3-D Studio release 1 and no longer uses it nor
plans to, NOR has upgraded it using that serial number, if I could find such a
person and BUY their old set, or even just Disk # 1 and transfer ownership of
that serial number, I could then upgrade to release 2.0 at a much reduced cost.
I know it's very unlikely that such a person exists, especially on THIS forum,
populated by avid 3-D users, but maybe one of you knows of someone who bought
it, tried, it, and didn't get into it.If you could put me in touch with such a
person, maybe we could work out some sort of complimentary purchase.
At any rate, that is my ONLY hope of getting 3-D Studio, and I DO wish that
Autodesk didn't price it so astronomically high. Thanks for any help or advice
anyone can provide.

PS – I DO own Animator Pro, Sketch, Chaos, CA-LAB and most of the Autodesk
Retail products; it's just 3-D studio that's so totally beyond my reach.
Peter:
I'm hoping that you are not totally innundated with comments concerning your
conception of 3DS's pricetag as "astronomicly high". Suffice it to say that we
spent over $11,000 on Topas and upgrades and still use 3DS for most of our
work. It may be a bitter pill for you, my friend, but open wide and swallow. It
will taste great, I promise, on the way down. I hope you find the deal you are
looking for.

Thanks for the good wishes, Ken. I could've bitten the bitter ($$) pill half a
year ago, when I still had some savings, but even then it seemed like to large
a sum to justify… or risk. I've been laid off for nearly a year, and am down
to about enough to pay one or two more mortgage payments. I expect to find
something soon, but I'd really wanted to make a career shift into more
creative, 3-D animation and stuff. We'll see…

I suppose the best thing you might do in your current situation is to find
someone in your area who is working in 3DS and join together for the good of
both. Successful companies have started with much poorer motives than getting
your hands on a great animation program! <g> Check out the local SIGGRAPH
chapter, or maybe call Autodesk and talk to Tina. I'll bet she'd be willing to
help you find a couple of folks in your area. Once you've been working with
someone for a while, you will be able to afford your own copy from all the
clients you two will be reeling in <g>. Good Luck! Ken
Thanks again, Ken. Those're good ideas and I'll pursue them.
