#block used twice
18 messages in this thread
I would appreciate any ideas on the following problem with a Quantum 105Mb HD
driven by a Trumpcard Pro in a 2000.
I bought this set-up used and have yet to get it working.
(I am a rank beginner who has yet to figure out many of these arcanities like
'mountlist' and invisible directories that contain necessary files.)
When I use the utilities that came with the Trumpcard, after some tangling with
severe looking flashing red messages I was seemingly able to get the hd
reformatted. I checked all the options including 'low level format'. The volume
name changed indicating something was happening, but the thing won't boot
itself or even appear on the workbench. When I try to let it reboot itself, a
message come up saying "error validating UnTitled, block 153226 used twice".
IVS has only suggested reformatting from a diskette boot, but this doesn't work
at all as it can't see the Quantum drive.
There is also a GVP series II accelerator with a 40Mb hd which is working ok
(miracle!!).
Any recommendations on books that clarify the deep dark secrets would be most
welcome. It would make a nifty upload if someone who has traveled the road from
IBM or MAC to/from Amiga could post a 'translation chart'. I have a feeling
that there are some equivalents like "config.sys=devs:(contents)" or something
like that.
Thank you in advance for any advice on the 'block used twice' message. Scott
Scott, I think the "block used twice" indicates that some program has
gotten into a loop on the disk, but I'm not sure because I've never found
a good explanation. ANyway, there are several solutions.
First: Have you discovered HDToolBox? It is in the TOOLS directory of my
workbench. I've found it to be very helpful and reliable.
Second: there are two commercial packages of disk utilities that might
help – Quarterback Tools and AmiBack Tools. Both are good, I hear. I
don't own either.
Third: there is a program here in AmigaUser libraries called FIXDISK that
might clear up the "used twice" problem for you. You can easily locate it
with cross-library searching. At any library prompt, type BRO FIX*.*, and
that ought to bring it up. I think the CIS name for it is FIXDSK.LZH, but
I'm not certain about the last part of the name.

Thank you for your reply, Betty.
I did try TDToolBox, but it can't see the Trumpcard HD. It seems to only be
able to see A2091 driver. When I invoke it, it says "driver not installed".
I guess I will have to try the commerical disk utilities because I'm on Cserve
via my IBM laptop and cannot download to an Amiga disk. Unless there's a hidden
way for the Amiga to read a DOS disk? Don't I need a Bridgeboard for that?
Thanks again. Scott
Nope. The Amiga can read MSDOS disks if you have 2.1 or if you have
CrossDOS (which is included as part of 2.1). With CrossDOS, you just
stick the MSDOS disk into your Amiga drive and it reads it. I does have
to be a 720K disk. The Amiga cannot read the HD disks.
—Betty
Thanks again. That's helpful to know that it has to be a 720K. I was trying to
use an HD. I'll try again. Scott
The 3000 can read 'em, Betty.

Gee, Ben – I don't have those newfangled things like 3000 and 4000 and
1200 computers – just a pore ole 2500. Thanks for helping out when my
hardware has put me a bit behind in information. But can ALL 3000's read
the high density, or is it just some of them that got the high density
drives?
—Betty
Er… _4_000's :^)
All 4000's, at least the 040-based 4000's which have bee produced thus
far. Dunno what the new cripple will do. Maybe they'll put a 320k 5 inch
drive in there to complement the EC030. Heck, if we're *really* lucky,
maybe it's got a spanking new Kansas-City standard cassette interface on
it. <mumble-gripe-whine>

No, the cassette drive interface is on the motherboard.
Oh… probably surface mount, too – they just never get anything right.

High density drives would be nice. I'll think about a 4000 – when it has
SCSI.

"Kansas-City standard cassette interface"
Always the optimist, aren't you. Actually that would be too reliable. They
would have to go to something like the TRS-80 model 1 cassette standard to
cripple it even more 8^)

If you have a HD amiga drive it can read HD IBM disks.

Scott,
Which OS are you using? If it is 2.x then you have built-in read/write to
720K MS-DOS disks.
If 1.3 then you can purchase CrossDos and add the ability to read and
write 720K MS-DOS disks.
Chris
Thanks, Chris. I was trying to read an HD. Scott
Scott,
Oh, I see, yeah, you'll have to move that disk's contents to a 720K disk. Also,
I should have said WB 2.1 and up. WB2.04 did not come with CrossDos support.
