#Toaster RS422 Control??
11 messages in this thread
I'm new to this forum, but here because I screened the 2.0 demo last month.
I'm mostly impressed with the 3D amin., and our B-suite switcher is held
together with bailing wire.
So my boss says OK, but what's it _really_ going to cost? What I'm looking
for is serial(RS-422, Sony P2 protocol) control of my Beta SP decks from
the Toaster platform. This is truly for the 3D only, as I could GPI the
Toaster from the edit controller (the Toaster does GPI, doesn't it?). Can
anyone refer me to the answer??
Also, did I hear someone say Newtek guys are working on serial digital I/O?
How about Ethernet I/O to Digital Disk recorders for frame animation??
-Bruce.
(P.S. For anyone who cares, I'm a PeeCee bigot. Period.)
You can get a RS-422 single frame controller for the Toaster for
about $425.
If you're interested in doing 3D on the Toaster, an accelerated machine is
a must. An acclerator board costs between $1000 and $2000, depending on
what kind of accelerator board you get (68030 or 68040) and what speed you
want. As you probably know, the faster, the better.
I think you'll be really amazed about how easy Lightwave is to use. It's
really incredible.

Steve-
Are you currently laying off lightwave anim's to any particular
device?
No, because I don't have the equipment to do so. The animations I've done
with LightWave so far have all been converted from 24-bit format to Amiga
Anim format, or to a format that X-Window can handle.
Steve
Thanks. I'll let you know how this toaster works out.
-Bruce.
Serial digital I/O to what, and which digital frame recorders use Ethernet
connections? I connect my Mac to the Toaster using my company's DECnet
product, this lets me move files between the machines. I know the NewTek
folk sometimes use TCP/IP and NFS for file sharing at the office.
How much is DECnet, John?
P.S. How can I shave your spine when I can'y shave myself?
Our Amiga DECnet is $395 plus you'll need an Ethernet card. I think the
price for the softwre is slightly less on the Mac side, and Mac Ethernet
cards are about $250, not unlike the Amiga Ethernet price.
You have a hairy spine? If I want more cheese in the world, then I must
make curds for myself. Please ask Robert B. to record his alternate lyrics
for posterity.
If I want knees of a girl, then I must make girl's knees myself! 🙂

The serial digital I/O I was talking about is the datastream from D-1 and
D-2 (and now D-3) videotape recorders, as well as some digital disk
recorders, like those from Abekas, and other paint systems, like a Quantel
Harry.
We are currently investigating a cache recorder like what Abekas makes, and
if the Toaster were to talk D-2 digital, it would multiply its
productivity.
