Dear Forum members,
Last year Newtek announced the Screamer. That system was based on 4
MIPS processors in a large tower chassis. Claims were made by Newtek
that it would deliver awesome performance at a very agressive price.
From what we read in the trade press and elsewhere the Toaster users
of the world were elated by the news.
Unfortunately, since the original announcement, Newtek has found
itself unable to deliver on their promise. They shipped a few
Screamer prototypes but far too few to satisfy the real demand.
Recently, Newtek went through some changes. These changes are
bearing fruit. Soon, we're told immediately, Newtek will release the
MIPS binaries as the "Soft-Screamer." Finally, those who've demanded
Screamers will get the chance to own one. Yet, an important
component of this new Soft-Screamer product is still missing. Yes,
that's right! The hardware.
DeskStation Technology, a pioneer in MIPS architecture-based systems,
provided the 4 processor boards that went into the original Screamer
prototype. Our technology is what made them possible. Now, we can
release that technology directly to the customer by virtue of the
availability of the Soft-Screamer. We intend to deliver systems
immediately at affordable prices. And, because we are technology
developers as well as a systems company you can expect an upward
migration path to keep Soft-Screamer users on the cutting edge of
technology and performance.
We are interested in understanding the needs of the Toaster users
with repect to a Screamer-like product. Please help us to deliver
useful products to you. We wish to know about the configurations
that you would find most useful; what price points for systems that
offer substantial performance improvements should we try to achieve;
what channels and dealers do you want to deal with and how should we
service and support your needs. Should we sell direct? Or through
dealers? We want to hear from you.
Good Luck in your SCREAMING endeavors. Sell direct, avoid the
middleman and pass the savings on to us poor starving artiste's.
Thats my opinion. Also IMHO you should allow expandability, say sell
a "STARTER" setup with 1 or 2 processor boards in it but allow you to
expand to 6 or more boards. When you have a Brochure or other
relevant data please send us a copy. Thank you. BTW does this "Soft
Screamer" require a Toaster to function and will it allow third party
development? Thanx for the info.
Thank you for your input and encouragement. You addressed three
important issues in your reply:
1. Sell direct to save the users money

I think I've got them. Here's my thoughts:
1. We want to save you money but we don't want to discount the value
of the many good resellers who provide great support and services to
their customers. We think that maybe, if we can give the resellers a
way of making good margins by providing them with systems that they
can configure some portion of, where they don't have to pay us for
things they can get themselves in the open market at close to the
same costs we pay for them, then the reseller is not just brokering
the product with little or no value-add, but is actually adding value
at around our costs and can thereby make money without burdening the
product's ultimate retail price. Make sense? I'd love to hear more
on this debate from others as well as any additional thoughts you may
have.
2. The initial configurations will have the ability to farm just as
you do with Toasters now. Beyond that we are considering rack-mount
systems that can hold scores of processors depending on your
appetite, and pocket-book. This is all very new just now and what we
do down stream will depend greatly on the inputs we receive from
people like you. We are also trying to work closely with Newtek to
insure that we keep them and their customers aware of what we're
doing. Newtek has invited us to be in their NAB booth and if you can,
please stop by to chat.
3. The answer to this one is really in the Newtek domain. From what
I gather through our many conversation with Newtek this week and
last, Newtek will be offering site-licensing and other options not
historically in their business model. But, you should ask them this
question.
Please feel free to keep this thread going. The more discussion we
have the better prepared we will be at serving your needs.

We don't honestly know yet what our base pricing will be or exactly
what the base configuration would look like. Any ideas? Tell us
what you would want in a minimum configuration and what it should be
priced at. I make no promises that we can deliver Y-MP performance
at $1.50, but we'll definitely be somewhere in between.

The further I get into this the more I'm becoming dissappointted that
I won't be at NAB. We will have people there but I have to be
CeBIT. When's the next big show for you folks? I want it on my
calendar before our admin. gets me involved with something else.
Thanx for the Phone # Don. I seem to have already forgotten your Companies
name. I remember it was Desk something but the rest eludes my poor
tortured brain. Since I don't know the current pricing of R4400 chips it's
hard for me to guesstimate a fair pricing but I imagine $8000 for a Base
unit with 2 Processors and a fair amount of RAM onboard would be a nice
starting point, perhaps have a Base unit with 1 processor and a fair
amount of Ram for $5000. I'm basing my assumptions on a GUESS that the
R4400 is approx $2000 a piece. I Figure 32 megs of Ram per processor
should be a decent size eh? 32 megs is rather costly as well. Now you
could also sell with NO RAM and allow the purchaser to shop around for his
RAM and make the initial purchase price easier to swallow. Have say 4 or 8
SIMM Slots that will take 16 meg SIMMS and later take 32 meg SIMMS. Good

Representing a dealer in Central Florida, we could *easily* sell 10 Screamers
configured as the NewTek "standard" (4 R4400s w/32 Mb RAM) for triple the
"standard" $10k price, tomorrow. We literally have companies waving money in
front of our face wanting Screamers.
Not a one cares in the least about WinNT apps. Neither do we. It would be a
nice bonus, but would not be worth paying for. NT can take a nose dive for all
we care as long as it renders.
Configuration preference would be rack mount or possibly mini-tower w/wheels.
We have clients who would purchase systems from 1 cpu on up to 5 total Screamer
(4 processor) systems.

Finally, some Screamer news! I read what you said about using
dealers – I would go for buying from a dealer if, and only if, it
doesn't increase the price. 99% of the dealers I've seen are almost
useless both before and after the sale (but especially after). If I
ever use a dealer it's because I can't buy something direct.
As far as configs are concerned, I think flexibility is the key.
IMHO alot of people would prefer a system that they could use for
other things besides rendering if it doen't hamper the rendering
capability too much. I think this is a matter of degree – if the box
speeds my rendering 40 times as opposed to 20 times, I might be
inclined to buy a 3D only box.
I'm looking forward to hearing more on this. Keep us posted!

We intend to keep this forum and all the Lightwave 3D users we can reach, well
informed on what we're doing, when, and for how much. You all will not always
agree with what we do but you won't be able to complain that we didn't tell you

I want to run Windows NT on any multi-MIPS cpu that I buy. I would
pruchase such a system to run the soft-screamer, but it would just
not be worth my investment unless I can run Word, Excel, and Visual
C++ on it too.
Thanks for your input on our Screamer-like system plans. Our company
makes a variety of very fast MIPS system products. We will have a
variety of 3D rendering systems as well, especially optimized to
improve the performance of Lightwave 3D while keeping the cost within
reason. Our systems run NT. As such, they run anything ported to NT
on MIPS as well as existing DOS and Windows 3.x apps. (in emulation).
For information on our general purpose MIPS systems call our sales

respect the integrity of the forum and not quote prices and other
such things here.
Systems that we optimize specifically for Lightwave 3D may not have
the general purpose capabilities you expressed a desire to see. To
do that might adversly affect the 3D rendering capabilities or add
unnecessary costs. Life is nothing but a series of trade-offs. Maybe
there's a center-point for you where we can achieve the right balance
to meet your specific needs. Its what we do.

was _hoping_ for when I heard of the 'problems' at NewTek.
I am very interested in your hardware for a number of projects I am
currently working on, and will call your marketing dept on Monday.
Is there any way you will be able to speed the modeling and wireframe
rendering parts of LightWave, or is it limited to just rendering (as
the 'screamer' seemed limited to)?
As for NT support, I consider that a key to selling your product.
Personally, I dropped plans to purchase a screamer when I heard they
were going with a closed design (or so the 'rumour' goes) – I can
only assume that many others feel the same way.
In closing, I wish you the best. I am glad to hear that you are free
from the yoke of oppressive (& unrealistic) NDA's. Your products
should only help to keep LightWave among the leaders in 3-D
rendering.

The answer to your question is really in Newtek's hands. I have been
told by them that they intend to productize an NT version of the
"modeler." Unfortunately, I don't know when. OTOH, other packages
available on NT/MIPS could be useful to some users.
We may consider, once we understand all of this better, negotiating
with Newtek for a source license to Lightwave so that we can continue
to optimize specific system features for Lightwave purposes. As you
know usually 20 percent of any code represents 80 percent of the
bottlenecks.

The long-standing rumour that the 'screamer' was going to be a 'black-box'
which did nothing but speed rendering is what soured me to the idea of
buying one.
If NewTek is indeed sensible enough to release an NT version of the
layout/modeler, that would be great!

I'm sure it just more drivel about the Screamer and cross-platform
compatibility, etc. :^)
Anyway, another question that comes to mind about your products is:
What sort of display hardware will your box offer? Will you have a
built-in graphics chipset, or just leave us the option of installing the
PCI card of our choice? If not PCI, then what expansion options will we
have, etc.?

I am ecstatic with your announcement and intentions. I own and
operate a small 3D animation company in New York, and I was planning
to abandon my Toaster system for a PowerPC Macintosh. Your
announcement has made me have second thoughts. I realize that it is
impossible to post prices here on CompuServe, but how comparable will
they be to the advertised price of the Screamer? Also, the concept
of buying a One-Processor Screamer and upgrading when the need and
money allow would be wonderful. Any input would be wonderful. I
love lightwave, and to be able to use it with the speed of RISC would
put me in a fantastic state of mind!!

We should talk. I am still unclear as to what sort of expectations
have been created by Newtek with their Screamer. Obviuously, if the
price and performance of the "announced-at-Siggraph-Screamer" had
been within the galaxy, they would have delivered more than a
handful. OTOH, what they did deliver made good on the performance
promise, mostly, from what I understand. But our company's plans are
still in the formative stages and we ourselves are uncertain as to
how we can deliver something close to the original promise of
Screamer.
We wish to come as close as possible without shipping a few grand with
every system as I am told Newtek was doing. Newtek, BTW deserve
credit for trying and for recognizing that those unrealistic
marketing types had to go before they mortally wounded an otherwise
very inventful company. They are dealing with their problems now and
we will all profit from the original Screamer vision.
Sometime, reaching for the stars makes it easier to touch the moon.
I guess what I was getting to was how the screamer promised to give
lightwave a future. There is nothing on the horizon for the Amiga
when it comes to improved performance, so the screamer was the only
way out of a dead platform. I am sorry if I offend anyone here. I
have owned an Amiga since 1988, but when I see things like Indy for
$5000 and A PowerPC Mac for $2500, It really makes me reconsider my
investment.
Anyway, I am just curious as to your price-point and expected shipping
dates. I love my lightwave, and I don't want to see it die with the
platform it was created on.

If Indy's really sold for $5K I'd be reconsidering my career. Call my friend
Andy Keane at Mips Technologies, the wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon
Graphics (415-390-4130 is his direct dial). Andy is head of product marketing
and can give you the real price of an Indy in a useful configuration. You
don't even have to tell him why you want to know, just tell him I asked you to
call, he'll tell you the straight poop. As far as PowerPC Mac's are concerned,
they look good, they feel good, they may even smell good. They're a little
faster than a Pentium which itself is only about 1.7x a 486DX2/66.
As a point of reference totally unrelated to 3D rendering, a single-processor
MIPS system from us, in a fly-off against a 2 processor Pentium system that
cost $40K from NCR, was 40 percent faster doing some SQL query stuff. We're
even better at floating point. Benchmarks don't mean all that much but give us
a little while and we'll be able to provide some real data. Don't give up on
your investment just yet.

I know the announced price of the Screamer was like $10K but those they
actually shipped were almost 3X that price. When ready we will put the press
release in the forum library if such a thing exists. We will also be talking
to the folks at VTU next week and I'm sure they'll carry the release and other

You might think I'm being evasive on price and well . . . I am. We just simply
haven't determined what we can deliver at what price yet. That's why I'm on
the forum talking to you guys instead of my CFO. That'll happen next week.

Lovely, It'll be nice to read about yer Screamer in VTU. a Lovely mag.
I think the most important point is that Hastings has ripped out
LightWave's rendering code and created a standalone renderer.
Theoretically, this renderer could be running on other Toaster-less
Amigas, or the Mac, or Unix boxes, or 32-bit DOS PCs, or WinNT on the
Intel chips, which are certainly more accessible than MIPS boxes.
(Not that MIPS hardware isn't nice.)
In my opinion, WinNT is not the most cost-effective OS to run a "soft
Screamer". I'd say that 32-bit DOS *is*. WinNT, under MIPS or Intel,
requires 12 meg minimum, 16 megs useful, and then you can add memory
necessary for doing any rendering whatsoever. With 32-bit DOS,
NewTek could make a LightWave render engine that actually used more
than 90 percent of RAM for LightWave and rendering scenes. They
could leverage off the price of cheap DOS boxes, cheap Ethernet
cards, cheap hard disks, etc. brought by the economies of scale in
the MS-DOS market.
You make some very interesting points about what would be the best OS
for a renderer. Silicon Graphics thinks Irix is best . . . and they
can afford anything they want.
Our standard MIPS systems do take advantage of PC-like components to
leverage their economies into more affordable systems. We use
standard DRAM modules, hard drives, ethernet cards, and many other
readily available components at very affordable prices. MIPS systems
don't have to be expensive or proprietary to be good.
More importantly we got what we got for now and that ain't all bad.
Newtek did the port to MIPS/NT for two reasons that we know of, NT
has the built-in networking capabilities to seemlessly connect to a
non-NT platform, i.e. the Amiga Toaster and, our MIPS hardware was
available, accessible, affordable and very very fast. What's a 486
going to give you that the 68030 can't, besides the ineptness of
DOS. 32-bit DOS is currently called Chicago. It's in beta, it may
not be in release until 1995. How long are you prepared to wait for
an OS that runs only on existing slow hardware platforms?
Give me a hand down from my soapbox please.
We all want it better, faster and cheaper. We're doing the best we
can. At the rate system prices are tumbling we'll soon be paying you
to use our systems. 🙂
For a display-less renderer, unless there's some special hardware assist, any
OS would be fine. (Insert hand-waving here.) As for networking, devoting 12
megs to WinNT doesn't sound like the best approach. They could create their
own protocol for broadcasting packets, say, something like NetBIOS.
32-bit DOS is not Chicago. It's been available for years in the guise of DOS
extenders in products like AutoCAD, Topas, 3D Studio, etc. Hasting could
recompile his rendering engine tomorrow with a $300 Watcom compiler that
includes a royalty-free DOS extender that gives a 32-bit flat address space.
Each render farm machine could use the 'net.exe' LAN Manager DOS-based
networking program. It's peer-to-peer, or could talk to any WinNT server. It
comes with Windows for Workgroups.

But still, what would you run this on, intel-only? Don't the DOS extenders
have bunches of Intel assembler present? Maybe not.

Yes, they're Intel-only. MS-DOS-only, in fact. They're an awful kludge. I
blame Intel and Bill Gates. 🙂 I'm saying this on the assumption that yours
systems are more expensive than comparable PC clones. Of course, it's going to
be tough to compare horsepower, but there's zillions of people who understand
how to configure MS-DOS PCs, and there's plenty of animators who have excess PC
power already. You could make after-hours rendering farm software that could
tap the power of the dozens of PCs that sit idle every night at any large
office…

They're not idle in our "large" office. Our guys are up there working to make
our MIPS systems more affordable, easier to configure with standard PC-like
components and capable of running great software like Lightwave 3D. 🙂

John – I think you might be missing the point a bit. (Correct me if I'm wrong
Don, but…) Don's company is in the business of making MIPS based systems, not
application software. They're not interested in exploiting unused Intel
processing power out there. They're interested in providing HUGE performance
gains that cannot be realized with ANY Intel based systems today, even SMP
Pentium ones.
No, I'm not missing the point. I think the "point" is that NewTek has
the ability to make a rendering engine available on any platform, one
that handles LightWave scenes and objects. Why MIPS? Because NewTek
announced but never shipped a machine based on them? (At the NewTek
holiday party I made several $50 and $100 bets that no one would have
a retail Screamer by the time of the next holiday party. 🙂 If they
want to exploit excess horsepower, they should release render engines
for 1) the Amiga, 2) MS-DOS PCs, 3) maybe SGIs, and 4) maybe WinNT
Alpha/Mips/Intel. Of course, this is all idle speculation – NewTek
has not made any announcements that confirm or deny what the Screamer
board OEM manufacturer is saying.

In my opinion you guys are forgetting one thing…NT is not the total 32 bit
solution. Don't forget Chicago – MS Windows 4.0. This OS will be based upon the
32 bit NT engine. It will also be much more forgiving on hardware requiements,
and as far as the HAL [hardware abstraction layer] I'm not sure if it will be
standard equipment on Windows 4.0. This would make it a must for any other
processor besides the Intel platform.

Untrue. Chicago has been developed by a COMPLETELY separate group
than NT. Its design goals were to finally eliminate MS-DOS and
provide a better OS for the zillion 386 and 486 machines today
without requiring them to have tons of RAM like NT. NT's design
goals were hardware abstraction and portability (as you know), POSIX
compliance, security, and network server capability (option).

No – Chicago will be Intel only. Chicago is for the masses, i.e., the
zillion regular Intel-based PC's out there.
NT's system requirements will be coming down a lot shortly with the
next release (codenamed Daytona, which is now in Beta).
Let me add my 2 cents to the thread.
Chicago, a.k.a. Windows 4.0, is essentially Windows for Workgroups
with a new user interface: a notebook metaphor much like the Mac has
been forever. The reason its not on platforms other than intel is
because of its DOS/Windows 3.x heritage. There's just too much intel
assembler in the DOS underpinnings of Chicago to make it feasible to
port to another architecture. Trust me, Motorola tried very,very
hard to make that happen for the PowerPC. Bill himself participated
in those negotiations. The outcome was "no", and in case you didn't
understand, "hell no."
Windows NT represents the first pass at an important client/server
operating system for the future. Its current incarnation is a CMU
Mach-like kernel with layered system services just like most Unix's.
In addition, it features true peer-to-peer networking that is almost
too simple to appreciate what it took to make it so easy.
Cairo, due sometime in 1995, but more likely in early 1996, will spell
the end of Windows/DOS as we know it. At that time the NT kernel
will become the new host for the Chicago user interface. This
combination and its apparent death nell for DOS may seem a radical
move for Msft but think about it: 1. NT with its flat memory model,
preemptive multitasking, multithreading, multi-platform support and
multiprocessor support gets early adopters moving; 2. Chicago, or
what will commercially be Windows 4.0, will introduce a new user
interface, then; 3. Cairo, or what will be known as Windows NT 4.0,
combines the rich feature set of Windows NT with the notebook
metaphor of Chicago. By then, memory will be much cheaper, hard
drives will be under 50 cents per megabyte and processors will have
the peformance capabilities to manage this complex combination of
features and ease-of-use.
Its the migration path that matters. Any one product by itself will
not make or break a company with a solid technical foundation.
As far as the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is concerned, Windows
4.0 only supports intel, so there's no need for abstracting the
underlying system from the OS internals. As with DOS, Chicago will
own the system and its devices. Take it from a small company who
wrote their own HAL, its no small task but well worth the effort. Its
as close an approxiamtion to the ANDF (Architecture Nuetral
Distribution Format) expounded by the soon-to-be-defunct, Open
Software Foundation.
Hi Don. I'd like to correct a couple of details you posted:

While Chicago definitely looks like a Mac, it's definitely NOT simply
Win for WG with a new UI. Chicago contains the full WIN32 API and
does NOT require MS-DOS underneath although of course, users can
still run DOS programs. Chicago is multi-threaded, pre-emptive, 32
bit, flat memory, etc, etc. It's a BIG step for Microsoft. In many
ways it was harder to do than NT because they wanted it to fit in
machines with 4MB of RAM so that 386 and low end 486 machines would
have a place to upgrade to, plus they had to deal with DOS
application AND DRIVER compatibility (no small feat). Chicago has
been very tightly coded (due to memory constraints) unlike NT 3.1
(the current shipping version) which was largely coded in C for
portability but which ballooned the memory requirements. Daytona is
an "optimized" version of NT, as I mentioned before.

I believe it! The single biggest thing that will hold back the PowerPC is the
lack of a Microsoft OS. Apparently they'll get NT eventually, but that's too
big for the masses at this point in time (eventually it wont be of course).
The new Mac PowerPC machines are still wonderful of course, so the PowerPC will
do just fine.

It's a lot more than that of course, with the the NT AS (Advanced Server)
version. Domains, trust groups, global administration, etc, etc.

I think you're a little off on this one. Cairo is the BIG successor
to NT, not Windows/DOS. It now seems clear that Cairo will be NT
with the Chicago UI and other goodies. Cairo won't be for the
masses. Upgrades to Chicago will be. Obviously everything migrates
down eventually, but the 50 million 486 machines out there won't be
trashed that quickly and won't be able to run Cairo (it will be too
huge).
Maybe this is where you and I disagree on where the industry is going,

We agree on this. Cairo will be a) COOL, and b) multi-platform. The
thing to realize though (which Microsoft has) is that almost NO
existing machines will be able to run it. They've even seen this
with NT. In the mainstream, NT right now is good for servers and
that's it. Certainly the MIPS and Alpha versions are VERY important
for MIPS and DEC, but they're MINISCULE players right now. I
personally REALLY want them to become HUGE, but that's a long way
off.

Thanks for straightening me out on couple of my off-handed remarks
about Chicago. Yes, I agree it has many of the same features
currently in NT and shares the Win32 API. Yet, Chicago does not have
the security features of NT which implies that it does not share the
same file system. It's hard to imagine why this is so and how it can
become anything more than a desk top OS if its true. Yes it may rule
the the client but NT will rule many of the high-end desk tops as
well as the departmental and data center servers (NTAS).
As for running Cairo, I don't know if you were at the last PDC
(Professional Developer's Conference) in Anaheim last December but
there were machines running Cairo: DeskStation's and a Compaq
Pentium. In fact, more than 100 of the 150 or so developers in the
Cairo group are runnig on MIPS systems right now.
Further, the "tightly coded" Chicago is having the same
battle-of-the-bulge as NT. As Daytona will decrease the memory needs
of NT from 12MB to 8MB for Intel and from 16MB to 12MB for MIPS,
Chicago is currently having trouble running in 8MB. AND, without
ready access to "Doublespace" A.K.A. "Stacker" Chicago is going to
chew up some hefty drive space as well.
The closer these two are in system resource needs the better it bodes
for NT . . . IMHO.

rumor is that Chicago borrows heavily from the former IBM/Microsoft
OS/2 3.0 efforts. And, as long as Microsoft must give IBM everything
it does on Chicago because of its OS/2 heritage I stand by my

Based on the BETA, The fact is that Chicago "borrows" from both System
7 and OS/2. This is a great stratagy for the Chicago platform
because all of these features are very strong and by useing these
features you will see that Microsoft is attempting to please
everybody. On the other hand, Chicago will be adding quite an array
of its own new features that don't exist on any other platform.
Chicago will be for the majority of the end users yes and I think
that anyone new to the release verson of Chicago WILL nee Windows
expierience. As far as ease of use, No OS will be easier to use. As
far as easily corrupted due to a SLOPPY end user not staying within
his expierience bounds, yes. You can expect Chicago consultants to
be in demand…

Yup. You forgot to mention Mac – which definitely got its roots from PARC.
I think you will find that in NT Ver 3.1 the OS/2 1.0 implimentation
was due to contract requirements with IBM. You will also find that
Ciro and Chicago only use "Higherarchy" ideas from OS/2 and MS will
probubly cut the IBM sharing requirments with the death of NT ver
3.1.

The problem is the memory requirements! Security isn't "free" and
they want Chicago to run on 4MB machines as a migration path for the
massive TRAILING EDGE, not the leading edge. The market is like a

Please don't misunderstand – I think MIPS systems are wonderful! I've
seen the NEC boxes, for one. I was also VERY impressed by the Alpha
stuff there running NT. I also believe that NT and Cairo will allow
non-Intel RISC platforms to gain in popularity due to the tremendous
performance with compatibility (emulation and otherwise) with off the
shelf software. This is the key.

Yes and no. NT doesn't have the VASTLY improved UI of Chicago. It doesn't
have plug-n-play. It isn't as OLE-centric. Etc., etc.

while because the "tail" of the industry is getting larger and

In my opinion you guys are forgetting one thing…NT is not the total
32 bit solution. Don't forget Chicago – MS Windows 4.0. This OS will
be based upon the 32 bit NT engine. It will also be much more
forgiving on hardware requiements, and as far as the HAL [hardware
abstraction layer] I'm not sure if it will be standard equipment on
Windows 4.0. This would make it a must for any other processor
besides the Intel platform.
Untrue. Chicago has been developed by a COMPLETELY separate group
than NT. Its design goals were to finally eliminate MS-DOS and
provide a better OS for the zillion 386 and 486 machines today
without requiring them to have tons of RAM like NT. NT's design
goals were hardware abstraction and portability (as you know), POSIX
compliance, security, and network server capability (option).

When I said that NT was not the total 32bit solution I was refering
to the sole use of NT as a Rendering engine. To the end user, price
is more important than a client server solution. Therefore Chicago
would be a more likely OS for the Desktop animator.
True NT is PORTABLE, I don't think MS is worried about the
prortability of Chicago. The NT server "capability" is standard
equipment not an "option". Maybe you mean user implementation
through Third Party Software designed to operate as a server app
under NT. As fare as POSIX 1.1 is concerend, your right , Microsoft
is wanting NT to be a sort of a UNIX "killer", but I think they are
doing a little to much as fare as attacking so many software platforms
within the NT higherarchy. I think they have a good thing going. In
my opinion he POSIX 1.1 and OS/2 1.0 Compatability should be dropped.

When first announced there was talk that the Screamer was NT based. Many
people commented that that was O.K, but also wondered(hoped) that there
was enough OS on it to be able to use it as possibley a general purpose
machine or at least a generalized server instead of just a rendering
engine for a single software package.
I know this is not an "overnight" development thing, but a multi-line BBS
option with "call in rendering" and automated resource tracking and
accounting for billing purposes would make local screamer dial-up services
attractive to some producers who could not justify one for their own
"crunch" use once or twice a month. Sharing rendering services and making
a little money would serve both the small producer and serious hobbyist
animators.
A possible issue with the soft screamer is one of Newtek freindliness.
Are they going to view it and you activitied kindly, or is there going to
be a 'lightrave' outlook from them? Are they going to be more free with
proprietary technology than in the past? (i.e are they going to be
reasonabley enthusiastic in support of your effort?)
And could ya put a killer 24-bit near realtime accurate dynamics model
flight sim game on it :^}…. just joking – don't shoot – it was a JOKE!

The time-share things sounds like a real good idea. I'm not sure our company
would be the best provider of such a service but I would bet someone with a
little initiative and a little capital could pull something like that together
pretty simply.
As far as Newtek is concerned, we're the company that provided the internals
for the Newtek Screamer. We have worked with them off-and-on over the past
several months to help them come up with a way of supporting the overwhelming
response they received following the Screamer's annoucement. They approached
us a couple of weeks back, following some internal changes, to make a decision
once and for all on the future of the Screamer. The outcome of those
discussions is our entry into this market. Newtek has your best interests at
heart here. They wanted the Screamer to come as close to the ridiculously
aggressive claims made last year by those who are no longer there. To do that
they came to us. We thank them for their belief in us. We know this is an
important component of their business and we intend to make them look as good
as we can. We also know this is a very nice market opportunity for us and
we're not going to blow-it.
We will be in their NAB booth with our first incarnation of the DeskStation
"thing" that Newtek called the Screamer. We intend to work closely with Newtek
to find ways of improving the networking capabilities, rendering efficiencies
and other areas where our system expertise and Windows NT skills can help the
Lightwave 3D user.

Don't sweat the "ridiculously aggressive [price] claims" made
originally. I remember an NAB where there were flyers handed out by
NewTek saying the original Toaster would be $799. It then came out
at $1500 or so I think, and then the price went UP some time later to
over $2000 I believe. I also have NO problems with what NewTek did
as far as pre-introduction hype or raising the price later (granted
I'm not a Toaster user either, just an observer). Besides having
some really talented and creative hardware and software people,
NewTek has done some extremely clever and creative marketing. If you
play your position right, you could ride that wave with Screamer
technology all the way to the bank. Here's my advice:
1) Make it scalable – (from entry level affordability for starving
video artists all the way to Steve Speilberg's (sp?) SeaQuest
rendering farm killer configurations.) Perhaps the entry level form
connects to the Amiga/Toaster configuration and has basically just a
processor, some RAM and I/O to/from the Amiga. Maybe it's even just
a plug-in card that goes in an Amiga Zorro slot.
2) Allow third party add-ons – getting one or all of the third party
image processing packages to run on Screamer for example would be a
BIG win.
3) Get SOMETHING out SOON. The Toaster bandwagon isn't a forever
thing, but the Screamer type of technology is just what is needed to
allow people to see a great migration path upward in terms of
performance. Commodore has (once again) presented a great
opportunity by not themselves coming out with a RISC Amiga. If
someone doesn't fill the void, eventually users will switch to other
platforms (Mac with PowerPC, PC's with Pentiums, or maybe MIPS or
Alpha based boxes).

If there's one overriding message that I want to get across to those
here on the forum and those elsewhere who really care is that
DeskStation does fast hardware for a living. It's all we've done for
4 years and we're considered by most as the leaders at doing it.
IMHO, there are three overriding reasons why companies with a strong
technology base like SGI, Xylinx, Cirrus, Oracle, et.al. do well for
a long time: migration path, migration path, migration path. Users
believe, and justifiably so, that companies with a strong technology
base will continue to deliver compelling products for a long time.
What our customers will hopefully come to know of us is that we will
drive the technology to them, as fast as the enabling technologies
allow. Some will wonder what they would do with such horsepower,
Lightwave users will never think twice. Yet, although we will
leapfrog the technology year after year, nothing we make will itself
become obsolete. Just plug it into the net, use what you can from
it, say the easier frame, and take the latest kick-@#$ thing we make
and put it on your toughest problem.
Where do you think all the 386 machines are? That's right, the
not-so-power users.
P.S. Geez, if this doesn't all work out I could always get a job as a
sleeping aid for hyper active forum surfers.

and you could render. What if you called in, then someone else, then
someone else and all of a sudden . . . the rendering took three times
longer, or four or five. We would need infinite rendering
capability. And then, how long does it take for a 128MB file to
transfer at 9600 baud?

chain of rendering service bureau shops? You know, bring in your
syquest or a stack of floppies, have some rendering done, drink a
beer, go back to work. Maybe attached to a car wash and a
quick-lube. C'mon get creative.

A few years back, Don, I was going to do precisely that for CAD/CAM
applications.
But it didn't take a genius to figure out that the cost of
technology would drop so rapidly that you wouldn't have time to
recover your investment before everyone had the capability they
needed on their desktop. (Well not everyone, but a big chunk of the
potential market.)
The same scenario is being played out in the service bureau industry
right now, where dozens of service bureaus are going out of business
because access to their $50,000 Linotype imagesetters is not required
by many people in an age of $4,000 1200DPI desktop printers.
The rendering service bureaus are already there doing animation and
other stuff and if and when your technology is actually ready to
ship, I'm sure they'll buy into it and offer it to their customers.
The rendering would not necessarily be done EXACTLY when dialed in.
Basically the rendering ORDER is placed by phone with all the
attendant information (tx maps, images, motion and object files).
Rendered frames would be sent back via tape (video, dat or QIC),
Removable Media (syquest, bernoulli or 3.5/5.25 rewritable optical)
or, for the "sure, its the final version that I wan't to keep
forever" types, CD-ROM for frames or Laser disk for real-time
playback at full fidelity.
Guess I should have mentioned the part about the routing of the
finished product. Getting the finished frames over the phone could
bog down the operation on both ends. As a user, I want to send the
stuff off to render while I do something else with the machine that
would have had to render what I sent out. If that machine is tied up
in the process of recieving rendered output, my only gain is if the
renders were going to be longer than the transmit, sream at it,
receive frame back. Doesn't seem efficient to me, plus you would
probably only be able to get 4 lines (4 jobs) in process at once
without really degrading the system performance if there are lots of
textures/maps involved.
No, I sorta always took it for granted that it would be an order by
phone, receive physical media with rendered frames in return. I
suppose you could do return vei modem, but like you said, that will
really tye up the lines and probably tick off those who couldn't get
in. (Theres a fly in every ointment…)

I am glad to read of progress on the Screamer. I think that in order
to keep costs down, it would be wise to sell the product direct to
the customer. As others have mentioned, the dealer is not a
necessary part of the ingredient here. A lot of the people involved
in 3D animation are already fluent with their hardware and really
require minimum assistance.
I would like to see the Screamer offered at various stages of
performance (processors and RAM). This is particularly important
since you have indicated that the $10,000 price mentioned last year
may not be realistic.
Lightwave is an excellent program which has allowed the masses access
to the once alien world of 3D animation. I hope that you will follow
the spirit with which the Toaster was created and provide the
Screamer in variations that would allow current Lightwave animators
to compete on level ground with SGI users at a fraction of the cost.
The great limiting factor for the majority of us is the rendering
time. And as not that many of us have access to multiple machines,
our productivity and ability to meet even average turnaround is
greatly compromised. It has been my experience that any decent
animation will take a minimum of 20-30 minutes per frame on an 0'40
4000 with 18MB RAM.
I think that you should also consider putting together a killer, top
of the line model designed to compete with the Onyx Reality Engine
(they are expandable to 24 CPU's). At the very least this will get
you a lot of ink in the press and put the heat on the competition –
you know sort of like the concept cars at the auto show. You would
also be able to attract customers with very deep pockets.
A friend of mine oversees all architectural designs for the FAA. They
are heavily into 3D animation. I was visiting him in September and he
had just purchased over $750,000 in Silicon Graphics equipment
(including the Onyx) along with Wavefront (they gave it to them with
the deal). I mentioned the Screamer to him and he was very
interested, however, he mentioned the need for the hardware to be
able to fit into their current system (which is why NT is very
important, particularly if you are to attract current high-end SGI
users).
I am sure that if you can deliver a high-end Screamer that will
compete with the Onyx system (I think they run around $250,000) at a
considerable price discount, you will have government agencies
beating a path to your door.
As for me, if you can deliver the 600+MIPS performance with the
necessary RAM for around $16,000, I am your man.

I'm not sure I understand what a MIPS is anymore but if that's the way
YOU measure it we'll certainly do our best.
I've seen an SGI Onyx in action and I can tell you from that
experience that its a very impressive system. In addition to its
awesome performance its an I/O monster as well. There was a time
when MIPS Technologies, the SGI sudsidiary that designs the CPU
chips, had approached us about making the commercial version of the
Onyx, called Challenge, capable of running NT. This would have been
no small task yet they were not willing to pay to have it done. We
would have been given some rights to resell the systems but SGI, the
mothership, simply had no need nor desire to make a system with that
kind of horsepower available in an "open system" format. Too bad for
them. We walked.
We have the ability, sometime before the end of this year, to deliver
Onyx-like rendering horsepower for Lightwave 3D. As we understand
the market need better we will lay out a roadmap for the serious
3D'rs. At the same time, or shortly thereafter, we will address the
needs of the less intense users.

P.S. A joke around SGI is that all Onyx installations come with an
Andrew. That's the guy they ship with the system whose only function
is to keep it running. And his name is really Andrew.

How's this for a really crazy idea? How about a MIPS-based
Bridgeboard? I envision something like the Netware Application
Engines some networking companies offer for their hubs – which are
nothing more than '486s that slide into the hub chassis.
If you think about it, there are probably a lot of smaller guys out
there, one-man shops, doing Lightwave. They could really use a speed
boost, but probably don't care about networking, or screen displays,
or anything. They just want a fast rendering engine.
Sooo…you put a MIPS+memory on an ISA card, and put it in an Amiga.
License Janus from CBM, so that there is some kind of talk between
the MIPS card and the host Amiga. Allow the user to simply "send" a
Lightwave scene to the card, and find frames on their hard
drive…probably only load the absolutely necessary core of NT and
the SoftScreamer to make it run. The card could have 16 megs on it,
expandable to 32. Perhaps, at the most, also put an IDE controller
plus drive to handle VM needs.
This kind of setup (which would function sort of like the Warp that
was being discussed for a while) could be brought out fairly cheaply
– no need to throw in a monitor, SCSI controller, display card, case,
power supply, etc. Plus, it would give Amigaheads a good reason to
upgrade to your desktops when they finally outgrow their "Screamer
Card".
This could be some really cool technology…and the price is
potentially so inexpensive, that *every* serious Lightwave user would
have to have one. The biggest problems that I could see is that the
FCC considerations would be non-trivial, and that it would not be a
high visibility move in the PC world.

Accelerator cards have been around in one form or another for several
years, remember the intel 'Above Board?" Your idea is not bad, the
technology is what's bad. The ISA bus is at best 8Mhz X 16-bits. Not
a bottleneck when rendering in the local, on-add-in board memory, but
hell to pay if it goes virtual. Further, by the time you put 32MB,
IDE, processor, ROM, etc. on the card its cost is almost as much as a
whole new motherboard. A motherboard with greater expandability and
no slow bus between important peripheral devices ends up costing
about the same. Plus, its easier to control the emissions within a
box when you own the box. An add-in board running at 66Mhz with the
logic complexity you described would likely not pass FCC A. And, if
we believe that most users would put a card like this in a machine
they own we would have to guarantee the FCC that these machines would
not be used in the home even if it did pass FCC A.
Okay, how many of you renderers work at home? Hands please.

I work at home. Two A2000 toasters trying to (scream?) 24-hrs a day.
Just to add my support to this thread, I stand behind previous posts
describing an upgradable system that might begin at around
$5,000-7,000. Begin with one or two RISC processors, and adequate
RAM to use out-of-the box. Slots for additional processors/RAM. In
terms of "ceilings", I'm not a hardware engineer so I won't try to
tell you what your own limits are. The announced configuration from
last summer sounds like enough power to solve almost anyone's
rendering hangups.
Also, the possibility to open power up for use with other rendering
software (e.g. VistaPro, AdPro). From previous posts, I believe this
would change the entire concept of the hardware, and also falls under
the ultimate judgement of NewTek. Wishful thinking on my part….

VistaPro is made by a company called Virtual Reality Labs, Inc. They
have there own vendor forum in GRAPHAVEN. I'll post a request for
them to say hi to y'all. Apparently, they are currently working on
compatability of their software with the WARP transputer board (still
vaporware, as of now).

Not quite. But as long as we work closely with our friends in Topeka
we should be able to deploy, over time, any number of system
configurations with a range of performance and price that meets most
user's needs for a Lightwave rendering engine. As well, we would
like to work with them in finding optimizations inherent in our
systems that their software can take advantage of, and vis-versa
(sic).

I need the screamer and soon! Durning my dayjob, the projects keep
getting longer and more complex. Please get that box out soon!
My list, I want scenes with Raytracing, Fog, MotionBlur, and 300
lights to render in under 1 minute! Four frames per minute would
make me dance a jig!
Also, If this box is much more than the orginal price, I am going to
be forced to drop my hat… even at work! If Newtek could do it ($)
then why can't you guys? There's no middle man? P.S., please
comment about your statement a few messages back that said something
like, "MIPS…well, If that's what you want to call em…" What did
you mean by that? Teach us about speed!

J, We Will Be selling and Supporting many graphocs platforms in the
coming months, one of which will be the Raptor from Deskstation Tek.
Well, they were going to…. and still could, who knows????
I'd love to do it. Just like Newtek promised. In reality it cost
more for the 4 processor cards inside than what the Screamer was
supposed to sell at; that's before you start counting all the other
stuff inside and lots of memory.
We will get you there. Not right now, but just as soon as memory
prices come BACK to under $30/megabyte and the processor wars really
heat up. We'll pass those things through in the form of more
powerful, more feature-rich system products.
Tell me what you want in terms of packaging, i.e. pizza boxes, rack
mountables, wheeled black boxes, stuff like that.
Make mine RACK MOUNTED, for SURE.
By all means offer Rack Mountable "Screamers"
Wheeled black boxes…. hmmmmmm, I like the sound of that! No,
really, most of our video gear is racked, but why not design the box
so the front connectors can come off, and 4 little screw in feet
would allow it to set on the floor? HERE is my list:
1. Frames in 30 seconds to 1 minute per with every option "ON!" 2. I
would like a display that would allow me to have four 768x 480
screens on one 21" monitor. 3. I want a psudo real time
shader prospective view, like on the SGI-Softimage systems I have
used from time to time.
4. I would like to be able to start with one board, and move on up, as
I wanted,
to three, five, six, ten, etc!
5. Last, but not least, I want other programs to have access to the
speed, so maybe, the system could fit into the box, maybe the amiga
board could be taken out of the case, and placed in yours???
The long and short of it is that I don't want to have to worry about
rendering time. I want to place all my thought in the project
itself. But, we must all learn to crawl ($$$$) before we can run
($$$$$$$$$$$$$$), you know?

The problem with MIPS as a rating system is that it doesn't account
for differences in the system architecture in which the processor is
used. In order for an instruction to be executed it has to be there
for the processor exactly when it needs it. Unforunately, most
memory systems can't support that. In fact, few memory systems do.
In microcoded CPU's like intel's many of the "instructions" are half
or one-fourth the complexity of a RISC CPU instruction. (In a way,
CISC instructions are less complex than RISC instructions, which
makes the number of instructions for a CISC CPU greater than for a
Reduced Instruction Set Computer). The operative word here is "set."
RISC vendors complain about the CISC guys using MIPS as a metric
because their simple instructions are not comparable to the more
complex (this is really counter-intuitive) instructions of a RISC
CPU. Yet, in a way, none of this is as important as the actual
processor/memory architecture of the system design.
If you peek inside an Indigo, you see processor modules. On these
modules is the CPU, yes that's thing under the humungous heatsink,
some logic ASIC's and high-speed cache memory. RISC CPU's prefer a
separate instruction and data memory architecture rather than the
unified secondary caches of intel-based PC's. This separation gives
the processor an address space for instructions and a different
address space for data. In our architecture, the secondary cache is
again divided into 2 banks of "interleaved" instruction space and
another 2 banks of "interleaved" data space. What is interleaved?
Well, the R4000 series of MIPS processors are 64-bit devices. That
means that the system address and data buses are each 64-bits wide.
SO, in order to give the processor a 64-bit intruction every clock
cycle you have to have the caches be 128-bits wide. This way, on one
cycle the processor fetches the instruction from the first bank of
64-bit wide instruction cache and on the next cycle it fetches from
the other bank.
Your probably wondering why you don't just make the caches 64-bits
wide and throw something at the processor on each cycle. Well, the
problem with that is that in order to keep up with a processor ready
to fetch its next instruction once every 50Mhz or so you would need
cache RAMs with a clock to output of 10ns or less. These are very
expensive. Interleaving allows you to use less expensive 17ns RAMs
to effectively accomplish the same task. Its a more involved design
but its far less expensive. What does this have to do with an
Indigo? Well, an Indigo uses those fast RAMs in a non-interleaved
cache memory scheme. Thus, Indigos cost a great deal more to build.
SO you're wondering what all this mumbo-jumbo has to do with ratings
based on Millions of Instructions Per Second. Think about it. If a
processor is not always, always capable of fetching the next
instruction when its ready, without delay, then a wait-state is
inserted. A wait-state lets the processor tick a clock cycle or two
while it waits for the cache memory to ready the next instruction or
the data results of a previous operation. If the data ain't there
the processor keeps on ticking but it isn't doing anything. In fact,
no processor, even a RISC processor with infinite secondary cache, is
going to execute an instruction in every clock cycle. Its just a
theoretical model. Optimizing compilers help to schedule events to
take advantage of each clock cycle, but even they can't do it all the
time. The greatest dependencies are the speed, or interleaving of
the cache memory system, the depth of that cache memory system and
the scheduling optimizations of the compiler.
Our architecture is fast because we do bank-interleave the cache. We
also run the cache memories at twice the system clock. Further, we
have studied the optimal cache sizes for the variety of things our
computers do. Our first study was done doing raytracing, which in
your business is much like what the Screamer was designed to do.
That's why we believe our systems will make a great renderer and why
we'll be able to continue to optimize our architecture for your
purposes.
This is not all there is on this subject. In fact, I'm no engineer. But I
think this explains why MIPS is a poor metric for judging system speeds.
This has to be the most complex, best example as to the reason I went
on line with Compuserve in the first place! No dribble talk! Whoooo!
I do understand now, better than I ever have before, how MIPS, and
this system would work. How would STATIC MEMORY fit into this
picture? Would this memory cut down on CPU time as the CPU would
never have to refresh until it needed to, speeding up rendering? I
have heard from others that the more memory used, the faster a system
renders? Is this true?
If Newtek's price was wrong, what were they thinking in the first
place? Just wondering…
Unfortunately my Amiga studio shares my bedroom. Actually more studio
than bedroom :^( I'd love to have Screamer on a board for my current
A2000/040 system. A single processor (up-gradeable) with about 32
meg ram, able to run NT apps, fully multi-tasking with the Amiga for
a about $5k or less would br Killer. Can your BIG boxes run Amiga
Dos apps ? About how much do the processors you guys use cost ? And
who manufactures them ? Do you currently sell single processor
systems ? Please deliver something soon.
My Toaster arrives tomorrow. Consider my hand up 🙂 As for other
ideas…I think that you should talk to John Foust from Syndesis.
Imagine if the Screamer, through the use of a bundled utility, was
able to translate entire "scene" files from other packages…so that
you could use it as a general purpose renderer? This would make the
Render Service Bureau a possibility.
On the other hand, perhaps you should be talking to Autodesk,
Infini-D, Impulse, etc…in the hopes of getting other rendering
engines on board. It would be pretty wacky someone could buy a
DeskStation, and simply use it as a general purpose rendering box.
Almost like a printer that handled multiple emulations.
There's plenty of problems with that idea… it implies that you've
got one central rendering engine that can perform every trick and
feature that's possible in the scene, motion and geometry portions of
every 3D program. There's no one 3D program that does everything
that every other 3D program does…
You idea about convincing 3D companies to make render engines is a
much more realistic goal. 3D Studio does this already: the same
executable can be run without the GUI on a network of PCs. So their
"license" really covers the user interface, you are free to run any
number of copies of the renderer. Similarly, Newtek could simply
include a GUI-less render engine that runs on any Amiga. Or for that
matter, the renderer could run on any other platform… 32-bit DOS,
WinNT, Unix, SGI, etc. The Screamer render engine depends on TCP/IP
'rcp' at this point for sharing files. They could use any mechanism,
really.

Adib – remember that those systems use a lot more than CPU's. The 8
(or whatever) custom geometry engines are doing a large amount of the
grunt work.
Will the Soft-Screamer software run on any MIPS processor-based
computer?
It has not been disclosed to me what NewTek's plans are exactly.
When they do announce something we will all be better informed. Until
then, I'm trying to understand the nature of the user and the uses of
such a product. Soon, I hope, we'll all be doing something instead
of talking about.
