#Unwanted flying vertices

On one of my computers, when modeling in the editor, objects suddenly become corrupted- vertices suddenly "fly" off to different planes in or around the object. These vertices are connected to the object with edges. This only happens on oneof my computers, a generic 486-33 with 20 MB ram. I re-installed 3DS (r.3) and it made no difference. I also optimized the disk. The drive is compressed with Stacker- could this be a factor ? Would appreciate any suggestions.

The only cause I can think of for vertices flying away like that would be a corrupted 3ds.exe file. It's likely that either you've got a virus that's modifying your files, or somehow your copy of 3ds.exe has become changed in some way. I recommend reinstalling from the master disks after checking for viruses, and make sure that nothing modifies the executable. If the problem still happens after that, take the master disks back to your dealer for a replacement.

I have had the same problem, and finally figured out what it is. 1. It only happens when the memory limit is reached. Afterwards, the next operation that uses more memory will mamess it up. 2. It could be because of a corrupted 3ds.exe, I'm asking around. 3. Anyone have any optimal memory suggestions?

Ed, << 3. Anyone have any optimal memory suggestions? >> see pg. 112-117 of the installation manual. jonas[adesk]

Ed, I have seen your problem appear exactly as you stated with a cracked version of 3DS R3. But, since that couldn't be the problem it seems only logical to assume it's something to do with paging to your HD because it only happens once you run out of RAM. Maybe even a HD controller problem or conflict. Also, because this is a _very_ isolated problem you should not be asking The Yost Group for help as it most definately not the software. What version of DOS are you running? Anyway, good luck finding the culprit. <g> Dave Mennenoh

Thanks, but I wish I could tell you what the exact problem is. I am using 3ds at a school, and unfortunately, I can't just go up to the teacher and tell him to let me troubleshoot it. I'll see if there's a damaged sector maybe or a bad controller.

Remember? I had the same problem and asked some days ago about "scrambeled objects". Reinstalling the program on my 8Meg 486-33 was the right answer. In my case (same problem like Rudy's) a so called Microsoft Compatible mouse driver was the source of "3DS-Madness". After installation of an original MS-mouse driver all problems are gone. How did you come to the conclusion that your problem was due to a mouse driver problem? I am using an ATI bus mouse. If I were to put a Microsoft driver in, do you think it would help?

>>If I were to put a Microsoft driver in, do you think it would help?<< NO!! DO NOT DO THAT!! I was happy for about three weeks with that solution but its not the solution for our problem. It just happend again. Sorry but we have to look for an other solution. Waldemar
