Not enough memory

I've recently started getting "Not enough memory for Hi-Res" messages when I try to run the Fractal Forgeries part of Chaos. Other parts run OK. I have downloaded your document in which Chaos problems are addressed, but so far as I can see, there's nothing there about this particular error. I have also tried tinkering with the memory settings in my CHAOS.PIF file, but to no avail. (I am running it in Windows, as I have always done.) This worked well before, so I'm not sure what is different now. Any suggestions? Don

Brian: >>Download the following document: . . .Title: Chaos:The Software – Q & A That's the same document I referred to in my original question: >> >> I have downloaded your document in which Chaos problems are addressed, but so far as I can see, there's nothing there about this particular error. I have it right in front of me, and I still can't see anything about out-of-memory messages. Out of environment space, yes, but not out of memory. Maybe booting clean will help, so I'll try that and see if it helps. Don

Don, Are you trying to run this from inside Windows? Or in DOS? In DOS, and out of memory error simply menas there is not enough conventional memory (under 640K) to initialize the program. Either you have loaded a bunch of drivers, TSR's, etc.. that are eating up a lot of memory, or your memory manager is not releasing the proper memory to the program. In either case, removing any unnessesary lines from your config.sys and autoexec.bat should help the problem. Also, try removing switches from your memory manager line, or trying different memory configurations, in case it is the memory manager eating up or not releasing memory. -Brian

Brian: >>Are you trying to run this from inside Windows? Or in DOS? Windows. When I run it from DOS, it works just fine, and it used to run OK from Windows. The only recent additions to Windows (at least automatic starting) are a print caching utility and an add-on to provide macro capability to apps that lack their own macros. Disabling them doesn't help. Don

<<Windows.>> Before starting windows, type mem. what is the value? Then go into Windows, start a DOS shell, and type mem. What is the value? Also, do you run Chaos from a PIF file, or just shell to DOS and type CHAOS? If from a PIF, check the pif setting for minimum memory required. -Brian

If from a PIF, check the pif setting for minimum memory required. I run from a PIF file. It tells me that the program requires 128 KB and desires 640K (EMS 0; limit 1024; XMS 0; limit 1024). I can run it with no problem directly from DOS, but I get the memory problem if I run it either in a DOS box, or if I run it from the PIF. The program will run, but the message tells me there is insufficient memory for hi-res. What puzzles me is that it worked before, and I can't think of anything I've changed in my system. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my questions. Don

<<largest executable program size 493>> That should be enough memory. In your PIF file, try putting -1 for memory required , desired, and limit. When you have -1 it means for Windows to just take what it needs. -Brian

Brian: >>In your PIF file, try putting -1 for memory required , desired, and limit. Well, I did that, and it still doesn't work. The memory requirements area has check boxes for Required and Desired; I set both of those to -1. The EMS and XMS areas have boxes for Required and Limit. The Required box doesn't allow anything below 0, and 0 was the default; the Limit box did accept -1. I tried all the video options (text, low graphics, and high graphics), but none of them works. I am using NDOS with Norton Desktop for Windows 3.0, if that makes a difference. I know that NDOS meant that I had to modify an ERRORLEVEL setting in the CHAOS.BAT code, and that solved another problem. But at that time, the present problem had yet to appear. Do you have any other suggestions? Don

I hope you understand that CHAOS was never tested at all under Windows, any version. Frankly, I'm amazed that it works at all; it quite merrily writes directly to the screen, and has no interest whatsoever in sharing its space with any other programs. It is also quite demanding on memory, and (with one exception, saving the backing store for the pop-up menus) makes no use at all of anything outside of the traditional 640K. Some of the modules are sensitive and caring enough to allow limited operation when memory is low. 493K is probably below the useful threshold. Good luck; I sure wish Autodesk hadn't discontinued this.

Josh: Just before I logged on, I tested Brian's suggestion, and it didn't work, so I composed a message to him, and it was sent before I saw your message. What puzzles me is that I've been using Chaos through Windows all along, and this problem suddenly appeared out of nowhere. I had an earlier problem that was solved through changing an ERRORLEVEL setting in CHAOS.BAT, but then this new one appeared. I can still run it in DOS, but I'd sooner just double-click on the Windows icon. I think I saw a message somewhere that some other software company had picked up the rights to Chaos, and was contemplating a Windows version, but that may just be unfounded rumor. Like you, I wish Adesk hadn't discontinued it. Don

I've heard the rumour. Dunno if it is true. Jim Gleick recovered some of the rights to it, but nobody's asked me anything about the source code, so it's possible that just the title and nothing else has been transferred. The ERRORLEVEL thing was a last-minute stupid mistake…999 indeed…

Josh: >>nobody's asked me anything about the source code Ah, yes, now I see (at least part of it). When I saw your name, it sounded familiar, but I assumed that I had seen it here in the Adesk forum. I see now that you worked with Rudy Rucker on the program, and that's where I saw your name. Obviously, since I still spend time with it, I like to use it, even if it does work properly only in DOS.
