#error message

In attempting to call up a drawing in Acad (Release 9) I received the
following message: Internal Error E Read 5 Read 0. The message came when I
tried to insert the file into another drawing and again when I tried to open
it as an exixting file. A Norton Disk Test shows that my hard disk appears
to be OK.
Additionally the cursor movement appears to be erratic on my computer it
moves smmothly but the lines break up during the move. I am running an IBM
XT with a Quad 386 Board using a mouse systems mouse, a Mulyisynch monitor
(Quad EGA) and a 387 math coprocessor. This may be normal but I thought I
would ask.

Robin, the Eread error indicates that the drawing file contains some
corrupted data that AutoCAD isn't expecting. The cause could be one of
several things, including disk or memory errors. Do you have a back-up? (heh
heh). If not, try the Ctrl-C / DXF recovery attempt described in Appendix F,
or there are other possible third party solutions advertised in periodicals.
The cursor on my display seems to "break up" just a little as I move it.
Depending on exactly what you mean by "break up", I'd say this is normal, not
to worry. =SM=
That message is typical of those received when a drawing has become
corrupted. If you haven't already, rename the .BAK backup file and see if
that one is broken as well.
There are more and more file salvage utilities showing up on the market, it
would be nice if someone reviewed them for ability and effectiveness.
Also check the back of the manual, page 400, for some procedures that may
help in salvaging the drawing.
What causes this to happen? I wish there was a single answer. It can range
from voltage spikes to hard drive controllers (usually hardware). We are
looking to make .DWGs a little more enduring to such conditions.
