Anyone out there have any idea how to go about obtaining Microsoft's Multimedia Extensions for Windows? I've got the Denon DRD-253 and and AdLib Sound Board (which I understand does me no good with the MME). Even if I can't get the sound it would be nice to at least be able to run the animations (I just got the MS Bookshelf for Windows). Where one could obtain a sound board compatible with the MME would be good to know also.

The MME appears to be available only from vendors of hardware for MM and Windows (such as Creative Labs for their SoundBlaster Pro). Rumor has it that WIN 3.1 will be out in the spring and will include the MME. Sound Blaster Pro is available from many sources at prices from $195 to $295. There are at least two other boards that are supposed to be available soon that will support MME (Adlib Gold and ProGold Mulimedia). Pro Audio Spectrum and the Thunderboard combination are supposed to provide the same.

Thanks for the info Ken. I passed up the SoundBlaster Pro because I was told it was not compatable with MMPC. Guess my source was wrong. I'll go look at it again.

Creative Labs, which sells the SoundBlaster & SoundBlasterPro sells the MME's for about $70. They work with both SB & SBPro.

Thanks for the info Jerry. Seems I was misslead about the SoundBlaster Pro, being told that it was not MPC compatible. Getting that board seems to be the best solution all around.

Michael, The only limitation with the Soundblaster Pro that you might want to be aware of is its SCSI interface – I understand it's proprietary and only supports one brand of CD-ROM drive. This won't be a problem if you're doing an entire upgrade at once. You might also consider the Pro Audio Spectrum, which supports a wider range of CD drives. — Dale Dobson

Michael, you can still use any known brand of external CDROM drive with the SB Pro without a hitch. Only if you are going to install an internal CDROM drive and are running out of expansion slots will the proprietary SCSI port of the SB Pro be a handicap. Rumor says Creative Labs is redesigning the SB Pro SCSI port to be standard SCSI and should have revised hardware shipping by mid-year.

I have the sounblaster pro with the panasonic cdrom, and so far so good. That is AFTER i got some drivers that actually worked with my f****** video card. If anyone has this setup and has a Diamond Speedstar and can't get 256 mode to work with some applications, drop me a line. I found some better drivers that WILL work…finally.

Actually, some of the machines at work have that display card and we are planning to get some sort of CD-ROM set-up on some of them.
