#Sony 31A OS/2 driver
4 messages in this thread
Hi Eric, Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but I spent the whole
weekend fighting a really nasty head cold (when a nose the size of mine gets
congested, it's a _MAJOR_ problem). You should be able to install from the
CD-ROM if you follow these steps: 1) Boot DOS and make sure you can access
your CD-ROM drive. 2) From the root directory of your CD-ROM drive, type
INSTALL 3.5 (if your
A drive is a 1.44 MB floppy) or INSTALL 5.25 (if your A drive is a 1.2
MB floppy). 3) After creating the 2 install diskettes, you must modify the
second
diskette (Diskette 1 – Install from CD-ROM) in this manner:
A) Copy the file SONYB31A.ADD to the diskette. You may need to delete
another file to make room – I suggest one of the Adaptec drivers
(AHA152X.ADD, AHA154X.ADD, AHA164X.ADD, or AHA174X.ADD).
B) Add the proper BASEDEV=SONYB31A.ADD line to the CONFIG.SYS file on
the diskette. Refer to the README.31A file for the proper switch
settings. Also remove the BASEDEV= statements for the files you deleted
in the previous step. 4) That's it. Put the first floppy diskette in your
A drive, make sure the
OS/2 CD is in your 31A, and press <Ctrl><Alt><Del>.
Let me know if you have any further problems with the install. -car-

Thanks for the beta driver upload. Alas, I seem to be one of the unlucky few
unable to get it to work. My problem is similar to the one already described.
I follow your instructions exactly (HONEST!) and still get the dreaded SYS
message when booting. If I install the driver in my installed os2 it just
steadfastly refuses to recognize it. My interface card is the MediaVision
PAS16 and I always boot to DOS first and have no problems accessing the drive
from there. Unfortunately, warm booting to OS/2 still doesn't work.
Is there anything else I can tell you in hopes of helping those few of us still
cdromless?

Dave,
Sorry you're having problems. Two requests: 1) Could you show me the lines in
your DOS CONFIG.SYS file that pertain to the PAS16 board and the 31A ? 2) When
you modified the CONFIG.SYS on the OS/2 install diskette, where did you put the
line for the 31A driver? At the beginning, middle, or end?
Thanks for your input – I hope we can get you up and running soon.

Ok, here's the info you requested. From my DOS config.sys:
DEVICEHIGH=C:\PAS16\W144B3\MVSOUND.SYS D:3 Q:7 T:1 J:1 S:1,220,1,5 M:0 V:40
DEVICEHIGH=C:\FUSION16\SLCD.SYS /D:MVCD001 /B:1F88 /M:P
and from the DOS autoexec:
LOADHIGH C:\FUSION16\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MVCD001 /M:10 /E /V /L:I
The line I added to my config.sys in OS/2 is:
BASEDEV=SONYB31A.ADD /A:0 /P:1F88
I added the line to the end of my config.sys right after the line
'DEVICE=\OS2CDROM.DMD'. I've removed the /Q switch from the earlier
'ifs=cdfs.ifs' line so that I can see the messages about loading the cdrom file
system.
As I said, I put the 31a driver at the end of the file, but I could try moving
it up and putting the cdfs, os2cdrom and sonyb31a files together and before
other .add files and see if that helps.
For the record, I also tried changing some of the SCSI ID's in the os2cdrom.dmd
file with no apparent luck.
Any help you can shed will be appreciated!

PS: You swapped the second '2' for and extra '5' in my ppn when you replied so
this message wasn't flagged. But, I'm searching for all sony/31a stuff so no
problem!
