#Font conversion

A question about Type 1 fonts: there are a number of fonts that came with 3DS
that I would like to use (via ATM) with some of my desktop publishing programs
(most notable Pagemaker 5.0), but apparently need the PFM files to go with the
PFB files. Is there any way to generate the PFM's from the PFB's?
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Alan
The Type 1's in 3DS are specifically designed for 3D Studio. Not only do they
lack the font metric information they also lack hinting information, kerning
information and several other neat little tidbits that would make them suitable
for DTP work. They are also licensed for use specifically for 3DS, not for
other programs.
Although there are ways to create the pfms for the fonts, the other key info
that was excluded from the sets, can cause extreme damage to Windows and any
programs running under windows. So if you try it and you end up needing to re
low level you hard disk and reload everything on it, just remember you were
forwarned.

Boy, that was a brillaint piece of information to leave out. How ridiculous.

Considering that you have to alter the fonts to bring them into
windows, and altering, recompiling, etc. is not only a violation of
the licensing agreeme nt but also a copyright infringement. I really
don't think it's ridiculous. The normal licensing fee for the set
that's on the CD is almost $200,000. I gave them to Gary for free so
that 3DS users could have the benefit of using them. I didn't put
them into the public domain. They are specifically designed for 3DS,
and since 3DS doesn't use any of the misc. info that DTP programs do,
there was no reason to include the data. By compiling the fonts
without the data, they not only render faster in 3DS, they are more
efficient all the way around.
As long as 3DS users use them in 3DS, they won't have any problems, if
someone alters them, then they do so at their own risk. Plain and
simply, they are not DTP fonts, trying to use them as such is like
trying to shove a square peg in a round hole. You may be able to do
it, but there's a pretty good chance you're either going to screw up
the hole or muck up the peg.
In case I haven't mentioned it, I absolutely hate people who screw
around with other peoples code. Running my fonts through a rip-off
program like those that exists on the market today, is no different
than running dongle-removal software on 3DS, or giving your next door
neighbor a copy of an unprotected game you've purchased. To optimize
the code in those fonts took well over 3 years of work, and I gave it
to you and all of the other 3DS users to help with logos, titling,
etc. I've seen my stuff on BBS' where people have uploaded them! I've
seen people with $195 animation programs who have never owned 3DS
using my type sets to make logos and steal work right out from under
3DS users! What a waste!!!!
The possitive side of all of it, is that I'm just finishing up a two
year long port of all of my stuff to the SGI platform. There
everything is encrypted for specific machines and when I release a
type set that took 6 or 7 months to create, I don't have to worry
about some high school student copying it and distributing it to the
world.
End Of Rant, Paul
Paul, Well, you should have said it like that in the first place. 🙂
You never mentioned having to manually edit the font sets to make
them work. Simply stating that if someone tried to use them in
Windows it could cause them to have to do a low-level was pretty
frightening. It's one thing if someone tried to load them into
Illustrator or something and they just didn't work. It's another to
have hardware problems simply because you tried to do it. I totally
agree with you now. Wow, $200K huh? That's amazing. So, can I tell
people I have a $203,000 dollar 3D package? <BG> Keep up the great
work. Hope I didn't insult you, with my comment.
You didn't insult me at all. I want people just like yourself to use
the fonts and make money from cool animations that include the
typesets. I just wish that I could afford to pass them out to 3ds
users and not have to worry about the world getting them.
Actually there was a time when licensing fonts was alot more expensive
than 200K. I know of a number of companies who paid 100k+ for just
10-15 fonts to be included in their package. Straight licensing now
usually pulls around 1 – 1.5K per typeface. It depends on what the
application is. You have to keep in mind that some of the more ornate
sets can take a year or more to make a single typeface. So when you
consider the effort and manhours put into it, a grand a piece for
limitless distribution inside a package is dirt cheap.
And if you start figuring out how much 3DS is really worth, I'd
actually start with a figure around 25K or so for the core 3DS code,
that's what it should actually be priced at. Then take into account
all of the free meshes, texture maps, etc. and you're easily in the
$400k+ range. 3DS is an absolute steal at the price Adesk markets it.
If you don't believe me just ask the other 45,000 or so users who
snatched up a copy before Adesk comes to their senses. 🙂
Take Care, Paul
Speaking of fonts, didn't you include a little postcard with release 3
about getting information about more fonts? I sent mine in and never
received any information on extra fonts. been a coupla years now, I'm
starting to wonder… (g)
Actually I ended up pulling the cards after the 100 that were in 3DS
ended up on every BBS in the world.
If 3DS had a proprietary font format I'd gladly give them to Gary for
the next release, but I just have way too much work in them to let a
couple of people buy them and distribute them to the rest of the
world. If you're going to be at Siggraph this year, you'll actually
see some of my greatest works in some extremely interesting places. I
had a few people who wanted them sooooo bad that they specifically
wrote proprietary font formats to support them and simultaneously
protect my investment. Considering how easy it is to support a
proprietary format, ( a couple of lines of code), I have a feeling
that alot more companies are going to move in that direction. Fonts
for animation are actually at the other end of the spectrum from DTP
fonts, totally different needs and subsequently different design
specs. I've considered writing a nice routine to read proprietary
formats and allow 3DS users to access them and bring them into 3DS as
entities, kinda the best of both worlds. I don't have to worry about
them showing up on a 6 year old's 286, and 3DS'ers get access to them
for animation. I've just been way too busy to sit down and start
trying to write it. Wouldn't it be great to type paragraphs of type
in 3DS with perfect kerning, leading, etc. and then see it all appear
on the screen? How about a really great bevelling tool specifically
for type built in? You could actually see the bevels in real time and
adjust them in a window before you created the text. Neat idea, don't
you think?
actually, I do think it would be a neat idea. Beveling fonts manually
can be a pain. I will be at Siggraph this year, by the way. We met
at the 93 siggraph in Anaheim at the official 3ds/sony gig, so
hopfully I will run into you again this year. Sounds like you've
grown and changed a lot (buisness-wise, you will have to judge your
own mental alterations ;-)) in the last couple of years.
My long term memory really stinks, but I did think we had met before.
Hopefully I'll be at the Adesk party this year and we'll run into
each other again. If Adesk continues it's pursuit for more intimate
settings as they did at NAB, we can't help but run into each other.
<BG>
I'm still a die hard 3DS user, and look forward to all of the cool
stuff every year on the Siggraph reel.

Hi Paul,
<< …Actually I ended up pulling the cards after the 100 that were in 3DS

On the aside.. Just to let you know, I've been involved with the
Adesk Anti-Piracy group along with the FBI, searching, verifying, and
prosecuting BBS owners with illegal copies of 3DS for the last 18
months.
I_hunt_pirates..jonas[adesk]
Wow! Ultimately Cool!
If I make my own club, can I come along? <BG>
I once had the opportunity to help local law enforcement catch a
person who was hacking his way into the police database and stealing
information. It was phenomenal fun. Not to mention rewarding. But for
some reason they wouldn't let me kick him really hard once they
caught him. 🙁
Is the Anti-Piracy group catching very many people?
Paul
Hi Paul,
<< Is the Anti-Piracy group catching very many people? >>
Yup.. all over the world..I wish they would post the internal
newsletter that outlines the different busts for the month.
Hi Paul,

I thought that 3DS's *.fnt fonts were proprietary?

YES! That would be excellent. How about taking that for a wish Jonas?

You know there is a (no-save until you register) shareware Windows
program in the libs called FontStudio3D that only costs $15 to
register. I have my copy registered and have gotten extremely good
results with it. Although it only uses TTF fonts.
>> I thought that 3DS's *.fnt fonts were proprietary?
Nope they're actually a pretty standard format.
Paul

got it.

So do it!
Talk Gary into having support for a proprietary 3DS font format in addition to
type 1 ( and I would guess True type in Rel. 5)
or ………What if you made your own format and made it only work with a
special IPAS routine? then people would have to buy the IPAS (which could also
take care of the real time bevel functions) .It could have some kind of copy
protection for your peace of mind and would allow us legit 3DS users the
benefit of your great fonts and programs.
just my 2 cents
David Camp
Very cool ideas, I'll have to see what I can do.
Thanks for all the feedback!
Paul

Well, ……. thanks for all the fonts!
David Camp
>> IPAS (which could also take care of the real time bevel functions)…
I'll put in a vote for that, too. Since you've already made such a huge
investment in font development, this would make a terrific add on. As we all
know, lofting and manipulating large quantities of text within 3DS can get
pretty tricky.

Hi Paul,
The typefaces that you mention in your message… are these the ones
already included with 3DS or is it another package? I am very
interested in fonts. I receive catalogs from Emigre, Font Haus,
Jerry's world (here in CIS) so you could say that I'm a font nut.
Please let me know if this is a package that I can get for 3DS that will allow
me to use more fonts specifically made for 3DS.

Paul,
Come, come, now. I understand and am willing to abide the licensing
issue (now that I know it), and I understand how the lack of hinting
and kerning information will negatively affect their use in DTP
programs. These are all good and sufficient reasons for me to not
want to attempt to use the 3DS fonts in other applications.
I don't respond well to scare tactics, however. I would have to say
that the your paragraph above strikes me as extreme bullsh*t. Destroy
the low level format? _Really!_ That would be a virus, not a
legitimate software product produced by a reputable company. Your
lack of a full last name already tells me you are not a customer
service representative of Autodesk (at least not on this forum), so I
would be curious what you base your claim on.
Take Care,
Alan
Well Alan it's not a claim, it's a fact that was pointed out to me by
several individuals who tried to do it, and ended up having to
re-lowlevel their drives. Basically what happens is that since they
lack kerning, leading, hinting, etc. when a program like Microsoft Word
tries to use them, it ends up running the characters on top of each
other. This causes extreme errors under windows and crashes the
program. When windows runs into these types of problems it does
something really bizarre with the memory and files that are being
accessed and causes multiple lost clusters, etc. Seemingly the reason
this happens is because it is simultaneously screwing up the GUI
WYSIWIG functions and internal page formatting. Whatever it does, it
tends to work in such a manner that the lost clusters become
unrecoverable and bad sectors appear on the hard disk. The sectors
that are marked bad are done in such a way that a normal NDD or
DISKFIX doesn't clear them up and reallocate the space. Hence the
need for a low-level on the drive. Also since Word, Pagemaker etc.
seem to be extremely vunerable to these types of errors, you
generally have to perform a reinstall to fix problems in the program
after such a crash. I believe the problems are further enhanced by
the fact that most windows based dtp and word processing programs
utilize Adobe type manager to interact with postscript fonts and in
so doing, when a problem arises, it not only affects the dtp program
but also affects ATM and the core windows code.
The "problem" has been documented by Microsoft and they responded the
same way that I did and the folks from most of the font translation
programs did. " If a person is illegally altering or translating
copyrighted code without the permission of the author and without the
integral knowledge of how the technology works then they have to deal
with the problems, legal and otherwise that arise from their piracy."
The PFB's included with 3DS do not carry a "Microsoft Windows Ready"
sticker and are constructed in such a way that they plain and simply
will not load in Windows without the end user altering the code, and
attaching additional files ala pfms. Therefore the end user will
never face any type of problems with any of their equipment as long
as they leave the code in its original form. If they alter the code,
then they are:
a.) Committing a federal crime
b.) Voiding any type of implied warranty
c.) Directly responsible for the damages that may arise from their actions.
As to legitimate software, the second that you take any commercial
software and start running it through translation programs, dongle
breakers, code crackers, etc. You risk the same type of problems. If
you do it, you're committing a felony, and quite honestly you deserve
what you get.
I'm not an Adesk employee and I never made any claim to that fact. I
did design, create, and compile each one of those fonts in question,
and wasn't trying to scare you, I was simply trying to be helpful.
The fonts are copyrighted to me and I tend to do the tech support for
anyone running into any type of difficulty with them. When someone
pops up and says, " How do I go about disreagrding the copyright on
this code and altering it so that I can use it for a purpose with
which it was never designed" Then I try to not only point out that
their asking advice on how to commit a federal crime, but that the
particular thing that they're about to try has caused people harm in
the past.
As a final point of interest, the fonts were not specifically
designed with that "failsafe" in them. I never even knew that it
would occur until a few people tried it. After several reports we did
test the circumstances in house and verified the results multiple
times. I could change the code so that the particular problem
wouldn't occur, but it would slow down 3DS' access to the code and
not do anything possitive for 3DS to balance out the negative
affects, so I really don't see it happening in the future.
I'm sorry you feel so negatively about all of this. For the record my
name is Paul Edward Lind IV, I use Paul L. just because I like people
to call me by my first name. If you hang out on the forum, then you
no doubt know that Gary Yost simply uses "G" and a number of other
people use all sorts of handles. It's not like I'm signing my name
Darth Vader or something. I've been on the forum for many years and
since my font sets are also in Animator Pro, I try to pop in and help
whenever someone asks about fonts. Autodesk asked me to do that
several years ago and most of the time they'll simply defer the
questions to me. I've been designing type for close to 15 years and I
tend to be fairly knowledgable about the various formats and specs
related to them.
If I can answer any further questions please feel free to ask.
Thanks,
Paul
