#Learning other programs?

For now, I am trying to learn, what I need for what I am trying to do,as far as
computer software/hardware, which is constantly changing. Their's no doubt I
need MOMEMORY! I have'nt decided to upgrade to more mem or get a new system
that is more optimised for my needs. I will undoubtedly upgrade to ImagineX.X
or maybe AM by hash. I saw them at siggraph94 their stuff was pretty
impressive.

P.S. I mainly want to create 3d animation,graphics,audio and output to VCR. I
know a little about PAR. any comments appreciated.

I agree with those who advise that Imagine L/T is the route for you to go.
You'll find many improvements to the modeller and a _lot_ of good textures.
Unless I'm mistaken, you also get a manual, and, despite what _some_ have said,
the 3.0 manual is a useful thing to have. You will not get some things useful
for animations, but those aren't in 2.0 anyway.
As for memory, are you stuck, as I was, with a machine that just can't accept
more memory? If not, another 4 megs might not break the bank and would make
all the difference as far as Imagine (or any other 3d program) is concerned.

No, my machine can accept 16Meg I think. I'm just avoiding it for now.
BTW is there any special proceedures to installing memory, or do you just plug
in the new boards and turn on your computer?

Some (most?) machines you have to install four chips at a time. for example I
had to remove four of my previous 8 one meg chips and install 4 four meg chips
to upgrade to 20 meg. If you have four single meg chips and want to upgrade to
8 megs you will need four more one meg chips. This can all be very different
depending on what type of machine you have. Pentiums use a completely different
type of chip (and some of the 120 mhz pentiums can use an even different type).
Best thing to do is go through the manual or call the manufacturer.

As I recall, my BIOS recognized the new memory without any special prodding,
but you had better check your manual. As Sam says in his reply, there are lots
of issues to check up on before buying the memory itself. By the way, I
remember that "just" plugging in the SIMMs was the _hard_ part! There's a
certain amount of finesse required and a certain amount of brute force, and you
have to be very careful not to overflex the mother board. Of course, I may be
more easily spooked about this sort of thing than most.

The simms aren't that bad, but plugging a VLB card into a new motherboard can
be sort of scary.<g> To plug in a simm I just angle it in to get the connector
edge lined up in the slot and push it up until it pops in. I've been pretty
abusive to my mother board, and haven't had any problems. I do try to keep a
hand putting opposite pressure from the other side of the motherboard. The only
thing I've lost in years of doing all my own computer upgrades and repairs was
a 40 meg hard drive which I immediately replaced with a whopping 80 megger.<G>

Well, I had some cheesy plastic ears (?) to work with. I haven't trashed
anything yet, though I did have a low moment when my nice new Dell Pentium
arrived with the sound card in a separate box. Didn't they know I had ordered
from them primarily to get someone else to put in the sound card? Well, it
worked.

I wouldn't have been too happy about that. I've found that it's better and
more cost effective to simply upgrade you own system instead of buying new
ones. One big payback in doing this is you learn your system inside and out and
it saves you a lot of money on repair costs. I couldn't imagine to pay someone
$50 an hour just to have them push a lose video card (or whatever) back in.
That reminds me of a news show I saw a while back. They installed a simple bug
into a computer and called out repair people and not one of them diagnosed the
problem right. They told them they needed everything from a new hard drive to a
new motherboard when almost any virus program could have fixed the problem.
Just something for everyone to think about next time there's a problem.<g>
I personally haven't bought a new system since I bought my 286.
