Are you being fair? I think not. Not to NewTek and not to RAD. They ARE getting this product out, and it is a very fine product. RAD is an excellent representative here on CIS. When I read your message, it seemed to me that you were attacking RAD personally, and that just is not fair. He is an excellent representative, a most cooperative and helpful person, and a real asset to this forum. Please do not attack him! No one ever promised you that the Amiga would have bigger and better and quicker everything than the IBM world has. Commodore is a very small company compared to IBM. We have a very small user base compared to theirs. We do have a fine computer, and the software does come – even if it is a bit slower than we would like. Our people need encouragement – not this kind of constant attack. Sorry to tear into you like this, but it really bothers me when we have these long, long threads of constant pessimism. I love the AMiga, I like Commodore, and I'm pleased with what I have. Pessimism can only hurt these things that are important to me.

I'm gonna have to agree with most of what Wayne has said. I was gullible enough to believe NewTek's RSN's of two years ago. I've seen the Toaster in most of its incarnations at various shows. I've had NewTek people tell me in person over a year ago that the Toaster "would be shipping in 2-3 months". In the meantime, I've spent about $20,000 on other equipment to do what the Toaster was/is supposed to do. As far as RAD goes, I'm sure that he's a very nice person, but I haven't seen anything new on this forum that adds anything to the "NewTek party line". I also wonder what the criteria is for someone on CIS to use a pseudonym. I thought you had to use your real name.
#99218From: Don Curtis/SYSOPApr 21, 1990 1:24 AM
You do have to use your real name…and RAD claims that is his real name…and since I've got nothing to say it isn't…then he's permitted to use it.

hehehe, I guess about a year ago I had a real problem with the real name policy… I kept changing my name to Eet in the forum (so I didn't have to in co) and surprise, I kept getting dumped from the forum. I've pumped RAD and I've pressured RAD… and he still maintains that his name _is_ RAD Moose.

Any other loopholes we should know about???
#99227From: Wayne ColeApr 21, 1990 3:02 AM
You must have mis-read the message. I was not attacking Mr. Moose – the crack about his special treatment (fictitious name allowed) was an allusion to how the old medicine show psychology is still at work in the electronic age – we tend to give the guy with the "magic" all kinds of breaks no one else gets. This is not an attack on the man with the "magic" – it is an amusing (to me) observation of how the mesmerised crowd "makes allowances". The other point you completly missed is probably one that most westerners will never get. Newton understood the principle in physics. Vedic seers and other astute observers of human nature understood it in psychic terms: the harder you push from the right, the more resitance you get from the left. So here we have NewTek (through the good offices of the Moose) pushing so very hard on the late (pun intended) great toaster, and people like Mr Forcade pushing right back with the anger of betrayal. Now, apparently they don't allow pets in the board room at NewTek, otherwise Mr. Moose would not have made the statement about "no press releases or advertisments…" as he would have known about the ads that say, "If you wnat a Toaster then get your bread ready…" and the back-to-back articles on the Toaster, one by Tim Jenison (Mr. Moose MUST know him, right?) in AVID, the Amiga Video Journal. So I've not actually attacked the Moose (I deplore hunting – its horribly inhumane and unsporting). I may have teased a little. But that is because there is this technically savvy quadruped trying to dance to the toaster tune in the marketdroid arena. The effect is not necessarily a postive one for him, NewTek or the Toaster. Let me be blunt. CBM does not discuss 1.4, ECS, the 3000 etc etc for just this reason: premature discussion INEVITABLY leads to some frustration/disallusionment in the prospective market. Therefore it is best to say nothing until the day the product hits the streets. Virtuall every company does business this way. SoftLogik did not. Look at the mess they

I have a business card, given to me by Rad about 4 years ago at an early Amiga show. It says 'Rad Moose' on it. Whether or not it is his mother's name has little bearing on what his name is now (ever hear of Marvelous Marvin Hagler? Marvellous _IS_ his name).
#99327From: Wayne ColeApr 22, 1990 1:13 AM
I have a badge from Kennedy Space Center circa 1981 when I worked there that has my name as Moose Stach. I doubt, however, that CIS would allow me to try to use it in my billing info or on this forum. In fact, I bet the highway patrol would get upset if I tried to give them a drivers license with that name on it. Wonder who Rad's paycheck is made out to? At least you've pput my mind to rest about one potential devastating social grace violation – I had assumed he was a he and not a she or an it (the people next door call their cat an "it" — unfair eventhoug she has had "the operation"…I wasn't sure how people deal with the potential problem of stray mooses these days…). Anyway, for those looking for a run down on the Toaster's features they can look at an article by its designer in the current issue of Avid. For a copy or subscription, contact them at 370 Altair Way, #207, Sunnyvale CA 94086 (408) 252-0508.

Well, put it this way… Rad is known by the name he uses here, throughout the Amiga community. He does business as Rad Moose. He is not trying to put anything over on anyone. We have no proof that his name is anything but Rad Moose.
#100050From: Wayne ColeApr 25, 1990 11:46 PM
Larry, There is a community in which I am known as Nibir. Can I use that here? (Actually I don't care – the whole thing about the moose moniker is sorta yippee theatre of the absurd and rather cosmic. But it does seem double standardish when some poor guy signs on a "John" and the sysops get on him about full name when there is a Rad Moose loose in the forum! Guess that just adds to the cosmic humor if you view it from the correct level…) And another thing! I'll bet that Rad Moose doesn't know the Moose Salute! wmc

WC- I like your attitude. Be careful, though, I actually received hate E-mail after I had the temerity to be critical on this forum.
#99389From: Ethan SolomitaApr 22, 1990 3:43 PM
However (hate to be the rat) the operators at NewTek told me his real name. I don't remember it however. If his name is Rad Moose/NewTek it shouldn't really be a problem, since he's representing a company, not an individual.

[ continuation ] went through with the first two releases of PageStream. Whether you are a freind of SoftLogik or not you have to admit there was incredible resentment at the way it turned out after two years of hearing about it prior to its actual release. I was also involved with a company that had a dynamite demo unit that they went to sale with before it was ready and the company is now out of business due to dashed hopes and customer frustration. NewTek has demoed but not sold the product. Frustration is building as is evident by the messages here. My point was to say, "hey, Moose, enough with the Toaster – stick to stuff that exists and is in the hands of consumers now. Let the Toaster speak for itself when it gets released." Betty, you know that a bad thought harbored has sme force. A bad thought spoken has incredible force. Not so much for the listener as the speaker. If Rad just quits talking about the Toaster, there will be less opportunity for the Mr. Forcades to vent their frustration and thus make them less likely to buy when it is released. The other point that had nothing to do with the Moose (as he is a technical type and technical types like to share too much to be good business types, right?) is the apparent NewTek strategy to keep other developers at bay in this arena by appearing to be RSN to Toaster release. It is a very basic business strategy, but one you can only get away with once. In an infant business sector like Amiga hardware/software was in '78 and '88, such posturing may have prevented, say Micro Way, or some other PC/Mac developer from comeing to the AMiga market with a similar product because the cost of beating a company that is just about to release would be to high and the venture too riskey in such a limited market. The point I was making was that what worked well to keep the competion at bay may, if strung out much longer, damage seriuosly the market NewTek is trying to save for themselves. Not only NewTek but the Amiga and its users would suffer. I thought it was worth pointing out in case it had not been a concious strategy on NewTek's part. Having a wonderful product is nice, but you still need to sell it. There are people (as one message indicated) who have given up on NewTek and gone to other platforms and suppliers. I see nothing wrong in reminding NewTek of that from time to time. At some point you have to release, even if its Toaster jr. The problem with talking and showing is that expectations get built up that make it more difficult to actually release as the product needs constant rework to meet the latest level of expectation. And hardware cannot be developed that fast! (Niether can complex software packages). I have no stake in this matter. If the Toaster came out today it would make no difference to me other than the effect it had on those who consider the Amiga a game machine. However, if they wait another year it may not be any big deal as the "other guys" may beat them to market. After all, them other guys is smart 'cause they don't genrally give advanced notice on stuff (they learned after one or two bad experiences) they just spring it on ya!! I think if you go back and read my previous message as coming from a disinterested observer (from a loss or gain point of view) perspective you will get a whole different (and the intended) meaning of the message instead of viewing it as an attack on an individual.
#99514From: SyndesisApr 23, 1990 1:25 PM
Anyone who relies on a product they can't buy right now is a fool. If you don't want a Toaster, then don't buy one. Meanwhile, NewTek isn't making the Toaster as a public service, they are doing it to make a profit, and as a product made with their own hands and minds, they aren't going to release it until they think it's ready, until they think it properly reflects the NewTek name. If they've made a mistake by hyping it before it's available, then they are the only ones to suffer – along with any fool who staked their job or their reputation on a product that isn't shipping yet. Think of all the other products that were hyped and not shipped, in this market or in any market. Would you rather have companies ship products before their time? Trust me, the Toaster will ship and someone out there will still complain. The only "frustration" that's building is your own.
#99645From: John KellyApr 24, 1990 7:57 AM
Would someone please clear up an issue for me? Is Newtek a manufacturer of hardware or do they produce advertising?
#99654From: SyndesisApr 24, 1990 9:56 AM
No, they're a floor wax. No, they're a dessert topping. I've seen a lot of hype about the Toaster, I've seen it demo'd, but I've never seen an ad for it. AmigaWorld choose to hype it in advance in a big story; you're free to imagine why they'd do that. Didn't Amiga Live take two years from demo to shelf? Can you name a company that doesn't show things in advance, particularly if it gets people talking about it endlessly, and draws them to their booth at shows? Until it's shipping, it's not really a "product", is it?
#100052From: Wayne ColeApr 25, 1990 11:47 PM
J My, my, what a temper! It blinded you to the message. I don't care when t he toaster ships (if ever) and I'm not relying on a product I can't buy. I was merely making an observation based on the frustrations (rather strongly stated, I might add) of Mr. Forcade et al and adding my thoughts on how such frustrations could be avoided. My concern is that because there have been a handful of hucksters in Amiga land, there are some people in the world who think it is CBM/AMiga's fault and the machine as well as honest, talented and hardworking comapanies (of which I'm sure NewTek is one) that deal in Amiga products suffer. I was merely attempting to illuminate that dynamic and how NewTek might avoid it as other more mature companies have learned (often the hard way) to do. Perhaps when you feel yourself boiling over a message you should cool before responding to avoid so obviously misreading it. BTW Freinds of NewTek are supposed to be COOL! Think "cosmic humor, cosmic humor…" wmc
#100109From: SyndesisApr 26, 1990 10:58 AM
What's your point? Your original, three-part message certainly gave me the impression that you were "boiling over" about the late shipment of the Toaster. If it's true that you don't care, aren't going to buy one, and were just trying to "illuminate a dynamic", then I can't see why you'd disagree with my message. Who is really "getting hurt" here? Some kids aren't getting the toys they want. The world won't come to an end. I'm sure that NewTek wants the Toaster on the market a lot more than any one customer out there.
#101028From: Wayne ColeApr 30, 1990 1:12 AM
My point was that NewTek could be hurting either: a) the Amiga market by dicouraging others from starting a similar development because they felt NewTek had such a head start (based on the NewTek palaber) that they did not start. b) themselves by causing themselves to become compared with SoftLogik or other companies which advertised something they didn't have and were a long way from shipping. Because of that many people will not go near SoftLogik for a long time to come. For a while there, after they DID deliver and the product was far below the expectations they had built up, it hurt their sales so bad that they essentially went down to a 1 person adn part time help grom the family, as I heard it. (They may be healthier now, I don't know.) c) the Amiga community by appearint to the outside world that they are another "vaporware" company that proves association with the Amiga REALLY requires a good imagination – one to imagine you have all the software and capability that you really don't! (Not my judgement, but those at work who laugh 'cause I have an Amiga at home – well, you know.) d) Themselves (again) and other AMiga users because they may miss their market window to an Apple or PC package. This would hurt the Amiga in its "niche". Remember Apple is trying to sell themseves as "multimedia" extravaganza platforms.. And I didn't say I WOULDN'T buy one…I can't right now. i just put a rebuilt engine in my hangar queen. It has got to rent for quite a while to be able to pay back the outlay for the IO-360. So I wouldn't be in a postion to get one for a year or so anyway (but then it may be that long before these things come to market.) Then you have to remember that you have ECS, 1.4/2.0, new display modes and only one video slot. And for the non-profit group I do some DTP for that they charge, it may make more sense to use the slot for FF if the new video modes are not sufficient resolution – sometimes you sacrifice desires instead of your eyes. There are a lot of changes in the Amiga witn the new machine, new ops sys and ECS on the way. If the Toaster does drop I would want tos spend some time to see how the "love affair" holds up and what weakness it has before I, lay out the bread.

As for a), that always happens in a capitalist market. If their competition was concerned that NewTek was dragging their feet, couldn't they simply get their competing board out *first*, thereby stealing NewTek's thunder? I recall that NewTek and Mimetics announced boards at the same show; Mimetics had a frame buffer that they've sold a dozen or two of, NewTek announced a very early Toaster, by handing out a flyer at a show. Meanwhile, Digital Creations also talked about a toaster-like board. I suggest adding D.C. and Mimetics to your list of no-show products. As for B), you confirm my assertion that announcing products too far in advance can only hurt the company involved, and no one else. As for C) the Amiga market has more troubles than vaporware. As for D), OK, only NewTek is hurt again, so why are you worried? It's not reasonable to think that you've got to install every available product for the Amiga into one machine, so the Flicker-fixer and Toaster conflict doesn't freak me out. From the gist of your argument, it sounds like you're more worried about the reputation and business standing of NewTek, than the Amiga. I'm sure they appreciate the concern.

Wayne is espousing honesty, essentially, and I don't much agree w/ your proto-capitalist-yuppie justifications of these peoples public behavior.

I agree. There are too many messages hinting at intelligence problems and questionable ancestory. One should argue opinions, not personalities.
#101631From: SyndesisMay 1, 1990 9:44 PM
I still can't figure out what Wayne was espousing… He stopped short of saying "something must be done" about NewTek, like threatening Nader-like action against them, which I'd expect from any anti-capitalist. On the other hand, he seems truly worried that the negative vibes might hurt NewTek, so he's also sticking up for them. Yes, I'm a capitalist. What's a yuppie? Someone who has a nicer car than you? I have a dirty, dusty Datsun B210, year 1980. Wanna buy it? I'm no "proto" capitalist, either. 🙂 If Wayne can't make up his mind, what would you say "should be done about the Toaster"?
#101829From: John BittnerMay 2, 1990 11:12 AM
This is a bit off the subject, but why the Nader shot? Nader is pro-consumer not anti-capitalist. I think it can be shown that by informing the buying public, consumerism benefits capitalism rather than harms it. Maybe you'd like trade in that Datsun for a Ford Pinto? :>)

J, YOU GOT IT!! I AM worried (nat as in loosing sleep but as in mildly dissappointed over the needless) about NewTek's actions as they pertain to their health and reputation. Correct me if I am wrong, but they are viewed as an "Amiga" company. So there is the additional concern about guilt from association when something is a little off. My general impression of NewTek is of a company that, for the most part is concerned about quality products and supporting its customers. We need more of that to BOOST Ami's rep while hopefully the Gold Disks, SoftLogiks and MSS's of the world (and any other "got your money, now screw you!" companies) go belly up – soon! wmc
