Well, John, I got my 270 SyQuest and I love it. I SIMPLY LOVE IT! It's quick, quiet, and smooth. The only thing that sours me just a bit is the price. It's not that the drive isn't worth it, it is! My full time job has been magically transformed into a part time job (Hey, the economy has turned around, right? Yeah, right.) and inspite of my cost cutting measures, I'm a tad strapped for cash. (This drive is the first BIG thing I've bought in a LONG time.) Anyway, do you know a cheap source for 270 meg SyQuest platters? Thanks.

"Well, John, I got my 270 SyQuest and I love it. I SIMPLY LOVE IT! It's quick, quiet, and smooth. The only thing that sours me just a bit is the price." Yeah, I'm pretty attached to mine myself <g>. As long as the carts remain reliable, then I'll be happy. As far as the price goes, you probably paid about the same price for your 270MB drive as I did for my old SyQuest-44 when it first came out, so I think we are getting a pretty good deal. But when you are strapped for cash, any savings is a big help. Anyway, glad you like the SyQuest cuz I probably would have caught hell if you didn't <g>. // John (Speeding on the Information Superhighway) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net

Are these SyQuest 270M drives internal or external? And are they the same size as the SyDos 270M and 105M drives? Those weigh 2.5 pounds (external) and can run on batteries if a battery pack is purchased. They also have a carrying handle. But they work from the parallel port. Are these SCSI 270's available as external drives in that same size and weight? —Betty

The SyQuest 270 can be either internal or external. Mine was an external SCSI model and the case has a sticker with DC Drives name on it so it is probably one of their cases as opposed to a SyQuest external case (if there is such a thing.) I haven't seen the SyDos drives you mentioned so I can't comment on them. I can tell you it works flawlessly with my GVP 030 SCSI hard card. I strongly recommend it.

I'm especially interested in the small size of the SyDOS drives. I have SCSI for my laptop, and would like to have a SCSI version if it is available -but in that size. The 2.5 lbs is pretty important if you plan to travel with it. So far, I have not found the SyDOS 270, but the 105 boxes have all specs for the 270, and squares for marking which drive is in the box – so I suspect it will not be long. Next question is: Will the Syquest 270M cartridges work in the Sydos drives? —Betty

>>Next question is: Will the Syquest 270M cartridges work in the Sydos >>drives? If you are referring to the Sydos 270 drives, then I am certain that the cartridges are interchangeable…after all, I think I read (on one of the SyDOS 105 drive boxes) that SyDOS is a division/subsidiary/department of SyQuest. //daniel on autopilot in paradise \X/ powered by intel and motorola

Thanks for helping. I think I just HAVE to have one of those drives – and several cartridges. —Betty

I tend to think that SyDOS and SyQuest are the same thing with a different name but I don't know for certain. -> Next question is: Will the Syquest 270M cartridges work in the Sydos drives? I would imagine if the SyDOS is a 270 meg drive the carts would work.

Thanks, Leslie. I think I'm going to risk it. And get information about the drives, too. They have the 105M drives here at the stores, but not the 270. Also, the ones at the store are all for the parallel port. Haven't located a SCSI one locally yet. —Betty

Betty, IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, the parallel port sydos/syquest drives are actually scsi drives that interface thru the parallel port, I looked long and hard at the 44 meg sydos drives a few years ago and again "if I remeber correctly" the connector on the drive mechanism in the case that conects to the logic board in the drive case is a 50 pin centronics (same as scsi) The 44 meg sydos cartridges could be read/write from a standard 44 meg syquest drive. I hope this helps. …Steve Why would someone *want* to call a company MicroSoft? I can't imagine that its too popular with the ladies…

Very interesting, Steve. Hmmmmm…… That one bears a bit of thinking about. I still say I just have to have one of those drives! —Betty

Betty: As Leslie mentioned, the SyQuest-270 can be purchased as a bare drive to be mounted internally ($399), or you can have them mount it in an external SCSI case for about $100 more. The drives are 3? inch, almost exactly the same size as a floppy drive. I'm sure the SyDos 270 and 105's are just special versions for the PC crowd, and would probably use the same cartridge as mine. I know SyQuest makes an IDE version of these drives as well. // John (Speeding on the Information Superhighway) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net

John, Thanks for the information. My Amiga is doing OK for hard drive space, but my laptop is absolutely starved for some. I have SCSI connection for the laptop, and I think this drive would make it useful to me for at least another year or two – and the drive would continue to be useful even with another computer, and also with the Amiga. It does seem that this would be the answer to my problems. Do you have a phone number for ordering these drives? I kept the one for ordering the cartridges, but missed the one for the drives. Thanks again. —Betty

Betty: I left my Computer Shopper at work so don't have the number for DC Drives right off hand. Hopefully Leslie will jump in here to provide you with the 1-800 number. You might ask them if they have the SyQuest-270 in a low profile external case specifically for portables. I know APS Technologies has a real sleek looking 270 in a very small external case specifically made for the Mac Powerbooks. It's a little spendy ($689), but I'm sure it would fit nicely in the luggage <g>. // John (Speeding on the Information Superhighway) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net

Thanks. If it's in Computer Shopper, I have a copy and will just look it up. I appreciate your help. —Betty

LB>My full time job has been magically transformed into a part time job LB>(Hey, the economy has turned around, right? Yeah, right.) You're not alone. Over time, I suspect companies are going to have to bite the bullet and recognize that the profits they have become acustomed to are just not going to be there any more. The really great profits of the 80s are gone maybe never to return. The usual response is that they will have to quit business, but what then (for them)? What they (the owners) really need is to begin scaling back their own standard of living; their own money requirements. Moving over to the PC market won't make it either because those folks are in the same boat. Competition is still where its at; drop the price and sell more product.

-> You're not alone. Over time, I suspect companies are going to have to bite the bullet and recognize that the profits they have become acustomed to are just not going to be there any more. Well the CEO of my company has gotten a raise and a big bonus while the stock keeps loosing money. Same with all the execs. The lower and middle level management as well as the non-management people are the ones that have to bit the bullet. Unfortunatly, it's a common story.

Guess my 'Doomsday Quotient' is up, but I feel that we are headed for extremely serious times. The Great Depression of the '30s is going to be called 'The GOOD old days'. It seems that there are some extremely intelligent people at the helm in this country (businesses, too) who have very little common sense. Bright people who haven't a clue. Case in point – Mehdi Ali.

Case in point – Mehdi Ali. I concur except for the "intelligent" part. I think most big businesses are extremely short sighted. They can't get past the quarter, their bonuses, and their raise. When are the CEO's going to learn that they can't blame everything on the rank and file (especially when they have no control), laying off people that actually do the work isn't smart, and robbing from the blue collar worker to give to the white collar CEO's/VP's is bad for everyone.

LB>I concur except for the "intelligent" part. Probably a poor choice of words on my part.. should be 'smart' as in the ability to soak up info via memorizing. Rote. No correlation with the real world. There seems to be so much of that in gov't, too. LB> When are the CEO's going to learn that they can't blame everything on LB> the rank and file (especially when they have no control), laying off LB> people that actually do the work isn't smart, and robbing from the LB> blue collar worker to give to the white collar CEO's/VP's is bad for LB> everyone. Boy, you got that right. I think the operative word here is 'respnsibility'. There is no one watching the store. The guy at the top is being allowed to shift the blame to others. They draw BIG money and pass the buck. In big fiascos where many people lose lots of bucks as a result of the twinkie at the top screwing up, he gets his bonus and walks away to grab another hotshot job and do it all over again. It would not surprise me if Ali also screwed up the company he worked for before C=. I have seen small indications that the above 'rational' is being recognized for what it is and over time, we may see a reversal. Good way to go would be to write into the new bosses contract that he, personally, will be financially responible if he screws up. Tight ship after that, huh? Watching for this 'nobody watching the store' phenomenon is good exercise. There is so much of it going on (maybe less now than a few years ago because of tight money). The CEO is out playing golf with his top management and the company is being run by the $5/hour employees. Absolutely ludicrous.
