#silly to think
22 messages in this thread
A word about the Amiga: I was a proud owner and user both at my old job and at
home. But the struggling Amiga market died when Commodore did. The pace of the
computer industry has not let up, and now there are dozens of millions of
IBM-PC's out there; Pentium computers alone account for a few million. (And the
thing still can't animate as well as an Amiga could). Unfortunately, the Amiga
is dead technology. Deader than death itself. It's silly to think that some new
company will bring back the outdated technology from the ashes and make the
Amiga live again. It can't and won't… not in its most recent incarnation,
anyhow.
Who the hell is Escom anyway?

Paul, It's obvious that the home you mentioned is not on the range. As you
know, discourageing words are seldom heard there.
Regards,
Gary
Gary,
This home is either in Buffalo or Rome isn't it?

I don't believe it's dead technology, I think the Amiga operating system
can still hold it's own against OS/2 and Windows. I am willing to wait
and see if Escom really follows through. I think it would be silly not
to see what happens.

I don't think the Amiga is that dead. Yes, she's in a coma, and she's a bit
behind the times AT THIS MOMENT, but if Escom is serious (a fact we still have
to wait to find out. It is possible that she can be revived. I don't (and
never did) expect her to outsell clones or Macs, but she could be viable if the
resurection (sp?) is successful.

Wish you had quoted more so I know what you were referring to, but if you're
just looking for a definition of "behind the times" it means not up to date.
If there was more to your question, please repost and I'll try to answer…

I don't see why Amiga is behind the times…

Bart-
It is, though. I have a 40MHz WarpEngine in my 3000, making it the fastest
Amiga currently available, tied with a 4000 with a 40MHz WarpEngine, but both
machines are WAY slower than the fast Pentiums and PowerMacs that are available
for comparable prices. And the native Amiga display is, sadly, slower than
what's available very cheaply in clone world for most tasks.
As far as multitasking goes, I'd still take the Amiga, though OS/2 is catching
up and has actually surpassed it in several areas. As far as pleasant user
interfaces go, I'd take the Amiga, though again there are some features of
other platforms that I'd like to see added. As far as applications… forget
it. Word processing is my most important activity at this point, and neither
of the two Amiga word processors have all the features I need. Otoh other
platforms suffer from incredible feature bloat, so it's kind of a catch-22.
But logic clearly dictates (<g>) that the longer the Amiga is in a coma, the
further behind it will fall.

>>but both machines are WAY slower than the fast Pentiums and PowerMacs that

Isn't that because those machine are essentially used in mono-tasking? Logic
dictates that monotasking will be faster for a single task which shouldn't be
considered a bad thing.
>>And the native Amiga display is, sadly, slower than what's available very

I don't understand this one. Why is it then that PowerPoint is lousy and Scala
good?
>>Word processing is my most important activity at this point, and neither of

Personally, I use TeX. I use the Amiga one and maybe the PC one too in a not
too distant future since my boss wants to use it instead of the MS-stuff. It
does everything I want it to do, so I don't really have a problem with that.

That seems logic <sad g>

Nope. Amigas are perfectly capable of doing one task at a time. Their
processors are just faster.

Crappola software versus good software, and multitasking versus
non-multitasking. Basically, they have much more bandwidth than we do at this
point, but they don't use it very well in most cases.

I fear that's the reason why I have to use an Amiga all the time. I have seen
wonderful promises in the pc-world, unfortunately, I have nearly never seen
things that actually worked.

All Escoms got to do is licence the Amiga Tecnology out to other vendors and
they should do quite well from the start.
Amiga clones are being developed NOW. And from what I hear my current VLAB-M
will get quite a kick in the butt from one of these 060 machines.
There may be a future for the AmigaOS yet. I hope.

Paul,
two words about dead technology and sillyness to think.. It was the fate of
your so-called "dead technology" to be _miles_ahead_ from that of clone-PCs,
even of Macs. Look at OS/2 and you will find multitasking and OOP properties; a
decade after AmigaOS. Apple is trying to implement multitasking for the
successor of System 7.5. Both with resource requirements ( or waste 🙂 like
Un*x, but far away from its capabilities.
I agree, that there may be some games for clones now whose properties come near
the Amiga.So keep on playing…
For info about Escom read the mails, please.

I have to confess that I don't seem to get the point here.
But yes, the scrolling they -and others- do on PC's is absolutely horrendous
and gave us more than one headache. Which is why we use an Amiga. We *could*
wait another 15 years to see that peecees emerge to those absolete
possibilities of that old Amiga…

Bart,
sorry for having no belgium dictionary. >>..their overall plan :-)<< is like a
conception under which You can summarize every activity and result. The results
You and i know from a distant viewpoint 🙂

Escom does advert on three folded pages each month in many French magazines.
Only IPC & Gateway have similar advertising campains ('talking quantity, not
quality here)…
