Just for the record folks, bear in mind that we are not talking about PC's and Macs, we are talking about OS systems on PC's. And I will stand 100% behind what I've stated. The truth be known, its is a Superior OS. And just to prove it, I'm going to let you in on an inside tip. You can walk into any Egghead or CompUSA and buy the upgrade right off the shelf (or order it mail order for that matter) and install it without having owned any previous version of 3.1 or had it loaded. No catch! (There's a catch for the dealer's as their supposed to get a cover page etc. but nobody has been bothering with it. I don't know how long this will last, though.) So do yourself a favor and pick it up for $95-$99 before MS figures out that they're peculiar marketing scheme has been discovered. O.K.? I've given you a valuable inside tip which is going to save you over $200! Its worth checking out. And soon! BTW I think Ana is well meaning. Her spirit and determination are admirable, but not really focused on the reality of the situation. The fact is, NT is, without a doubt, the best OS for the PC available, hands down, and there's just _NO_ two ways about it. I have no problem stating that NT is the best OS system period, for the task at hand, for the job we do, in the environment we do it in. Argueing about Mac's and PC's is pointless. Its like argueing between which is better, Fish or Beef. Its a preference of style. I like the – no frills – get down to it – approach and from that standpoint NT is *IT*, regardless of platform. But don't take my word for it, you've got a great opportunity to check it out for yourself, just don't wait too long… the secret is out, and I know there's a lot of hidden traffic around here… word to the wise. John, Really, what are you talking about? Mac vs. PC? The fact that I would be happy to see a PowerMac version of 3DS doesn't mean that I am defending it against the NT version. Have you read my messages or just scanned throught them? I will be happier to have everything in one platform, to save time and money, but since this is not going to happen, I will continue to have both PCs (Alphas) and PowerMacs working together doing what each do best. If you want to convert this discussion in some sort of Mac vs. PC debate, then you have lost your mind, John. I never have made a reference to the Mac, neither I have compared it to NT in this discussion. And for that matter, never before. I was the first one promoting NT here and Gary or anyone in the forum will tell you that. You were the first that argued with me about the senseless nature of Windows 3.1 & NT against the brilliant future of 3DS and Hires for DOS, and the holiness of the prompt. Have you forgot that debate or what? Now you have rediscovered fire and you think that I am a mac diehard that hates PCs. sigh, whatever, John, whatever… ana /krazy images

Ana, >> You were the first that argued with me about the senseless nature of Windows 3.1 & NT. << That is absolutely incorrect, I agrued against Windows not NT. At that time NT was a possibility and I knew it. I preferred DOS until a better alternative presented itself. With NT I have both. But argue against it? That I did not do. I may have displayed some skepticism but that's a distinction that you are not making. And it would be realistic to have skepticism as NT 3.1 was less than ideal. Things going the way of Windows 3.1 would not lead one to have any faith to think NT would be any better. But the fact is, it is better and much much better. At some point you have to conclude that while its not a perfect world, you're getting more than you could reasonably expect, and I think that is the case with 3DS and NT. Frankly Ana, I don't even understand this debate. Its so incredible. The fact is NT is a really outstanding Operating environment. That's it. For you it has to be a Mac & PC debate, how else can you explain your behaviour? You argued for months and months on the virtues of the Alpha, now with NT you can have your Alpha, but now its a PowerMac… Anything but the PC. Gary even commented right after he made the NT annoucement, something to the effect "was there ever any doubt Ana?" because he thought it would please you… apparently not. I for one am thrilled to have NT, I didn't ask for it but nonetheless its much better than I could have hoped for, and so much better than the alternatives. Now that's what I think, and that's how I feel about it. Fortuneately for me, that's true, but if it wasn't I wouldn't carry on about it, I'd just try to find a workable solution. And that's really you're only option. Jeez as much as you like 3DS I'd think you'd get over whatever it is that bugs you about whatever OS is runs on. I remember when you argued FOR having it in Windows so you could use Fractal Painter… so what's the deal…? I'm going to drop it because its totally futile. Your a strong headed woman, argueably admirable in some cases, but in this case, I really think you've gotten what you asked for and now its not what you want. Too bad… really. John

John, I think Gary knows better that you would ever know my position regarding this issue and I don't fell like explaining this in public. He knows the whole story about me and he is the only who can have an opinion about this. And that's the only thing I care about, BTW. Period. Your: "I really think you've gotten what you asked for and now its not what you want. Too bad… really.." is so simplistic and untrue that I don't know how you dare to make such a judgement with only a few pieces of my personal puzzle. It is the same with your list of myths or half truths, depending on the way you look at them: A couple of hours with NT and you think that you can post a list of "myths". Geez, the theme here is that from your own particular experience, which can't never be extrapolated to the universe, you are making the holy grail. Then, for people who have been dealing with NT for a couple of years, like me, NT is not the holy grail, although 3DS for NT WILL be the holy grail. NT is cool, but it is not THE OS. It could be THE OS is the future, but it still has to grow and improve in many areas. Right now, it is a good OS, a good soil for 3DS, but not the best thing since sliced bread. I have been the number one _3ds for NT_ supporter here and I will continue to be the number one 3ds4NT fan. Yes, one of the reasons I wanted the program to be ported was because we wanted all our apps to work together. Still, this is what we are going to get, but not in the same way we planned before (read: no prepress work on NT). But things change, like in your case (NT from Devil to Angel: The Novel), and my perception about how I can put all the operations we run together have changed too. We are approaching a nirvanna in many fields and, for sure, NT, 3DS and the Alpha will complete a cycle here. Again, I have never stopped to backup 3DS for NT and will never do, but there are a few miles between that and not recognizing the problems that are part of NT. ana /krazy images

Yes Ana, you are the expert on all things, how dare I question your worldly experience. You know all and for me to presuppose that I might know anything is just inconcievable. I humbly apologise. Still I hope people will go out and check into NT, and see if its not everything I've said it is. John

Eeeeexaaaaactly John (and I am just a woman, isn't that surprising for you?) People will check NT if they want to have all the wonders that 3DSr5 is bringing to us. They will discover that some of their peripherals won't have drivers for it. They will discover that they will need a bunch of memory to keep with what they are doing right now with 3DS. And yes, depending on their conficurations, they will love or hate NT. But everybody is going to love 3DSr5, and if that comes with some annoying bits (like having to reboot to use their scanner from Windows 3.1 or the price for the extra 32MBs) most probably they won't care. Read my message to Robert please. And please, cut the cheap irony OK? ana /krazy images

PS. Please don't be insulted by my message. I actually really enjoy reading your _seemingly_ biased opinions on all of this. You really liven things up around here sometimes. <g> DM

>> and I am just a woman, isn't that suprising for you? << You are "just" a woman, like I am "just" a man, and its an absolutely absurd statement to make. There are two things that suprise me. One, is that you would make an insuating comment like that; which is as false as it is malicious. And two, that you would let your emotions guide your judgement and behaviour. I really don't care why you're doing it, but I think it would be in your best interest to stop, as it really serves no purpose other than being generally destructive. Its obvious you don't care about my feelings but you might consider the feelings of those here that you profess to care about. Believe it or not, you spoiling it for them as well. And if you're going to persist in this, I think to retain some credibility, you're going to have to start making some serious rational arguments, which in the end aren't going to make any difference anyway. So why not just leave it be, and let everyone make the most of it. That would seem to be the most prudent course. John

John, I've only had the time to skim this (bizarre) thread, but it looks to me as if Ana has gotten bored and is trying to stir things up on the forum in order to have some fun with all of us. – G

Gary, Very insightful comment. I'll trust that that is what it is. Thanks, John

<<looks to me as if Ana has gotten bored and is trying to stir things up on the forum in order to have some fun with all of us.>> Ana's "comments" have been far from "fun". All John was trying to do was relay some of his experiences to the rest of us, when ana objected and demanded that everyone accept her's instead. Really bizzare behavior. No, John wasn't trying to relate his experiences to us. He was trying to establish the Myths about NT. He described things that are not enterely true. My first reply wasn't controversial at all. Its purpose was to highlight that his affirmations can't be applied to everybody and therefore, some of his myths are not myths but facts as big as the Everest and the Aconcagua together. His personal experience with NT is not universal. There are people with more or less problems with NT, but there are still problems, specially related to driver issues and hardware/software compatibilities. My comments weren't fun because I wasn't trying to be fun at all. I only expressed my opinions and then some people jumped and get under my skin with some statements related to some completely different comments in the forum re. Macs. This NT issue and whatever business I have with Macs are completely unrelated. And when I experiment with nonsense, yes, I can get pretty agreessive and bizarre. I simply can't stand it. My fault, but I am human. If you want to think NT is a bed of roses, good for you. Then just go to your favorite navigational software and specify Ignore thread or some sort of command that will let you get isolated from the discussion. Sincerely, if at this point what I was trying to say it is still not clear, you either don't want to listen or understand one of the parts. In this case, I am the one you have choose not to listen for. Good for you. ana /krazy images

<NT> John, Buyin' it tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. If NT can find everything in my system I'll be pretty impressed. DM

We bought the NT 3.5 upgrade there, they didn't even bother with our NT 3.1 receipt. You can get quite a bit of software like that. Either buy the competitive upgrade or a regular upgrade. Corel Draw 5 for $179, MS Word $99, etc. They are starting some protection though. I bought the MSWord competitive upgrade since I have WordPerfect. The MSWord setup checks your hard drive for a qualifiying product. So I had to reinstall WP (15 disks!) and then install Word (9 disks!). We better start seeing this stuff on CD-ROM. The nice thing about NT 3.5, you don't have to have 3.1 installed if you buy the upgrade. Are you using 3.5 or have you gotten 3.51 yet? NT 3.51 has selectible file compression that allows you to compress files, directories, or your whole drive. The beta guys say it works great. I was thinking of getting the MSDN2 subscription, that way I can have the Win95 UI for NT as soon as September. NT with the Win95 is going to be THE OS.

Tim, Its good to get the confirmation from a second source. That will rest any concerns that it may be a limited experience. No I haven't got the 3.51 yet but it does sound like its got some nice features. I'm very pleased with NT, it much better than I expected. Quite frankly I didn't expect this storm of controversy, I hadn't even planned on getting into it, and now the afternoon is shot. <g> John

Hi John Thanks for your input on Windows NT. I had a question for you. Can 3D Studio run under a dos window in NT and if yes how well does it perform. Thanks Vern Shurtz Images Rendered

PMJI, The current 3DS can not run in a DOS window do to Pharlap. It runs as normal (as wellas everything else) when NT is configured with a DOS dual boot, and you boot to DOS however. – Phil
