I re-read your original posting about getting only the top tray. This may
indicate a problem with the physical installation of the 500-sheet accessory.
Upon correct installation, it automatically becomes the default paper source if
it contains the same size paper which has been defined as the printer's
default.
Make sure that you have the later model 500-sheet unit that is designed to
work the the Plus (the original units worked only with the 4/4M); if it has the
adj. tray, make sure that the green knob is pointed to the correct paper size
contained in the cassette; check same thing on the 250-sheeter; check printer's
default paper size. Does the bottom tray feed if you send a plain file to the
printer from DOS?

Dick,
The plot thickens… can you possibly give me the model/part number and/or
physical differences between the old trays (that worked only with the 4/4M) and
the new ones that work with the Plus? Is there a physical difference in the
mechanics of he two printers? I thought that they differed only in PROM and
memory.
We are in he UK so it would not suprise me if we have the old cassettes.

The part number of the 500-sheet paper feeder for the PLUS is C2083D. This
unit will work with both models. The original 4/4M parts were C2083A (Letter,
exec, A4) and C2083B (Letter, Legal, exec, A4).
The newer tray assembly has a corner hold-down tab that has a larger
surface area and one or two little notches on the exposed vertical edge about
1.5" back from the end of the paper. There are other differences.
The 4 PLUS printer is almost entirely different inside the case, both
mechanically (it runs 50% faster and is duplex capable) and electrically (the
processor is 4x as powerful and has a host of improved capabilities). There are
electrical connections between the printer and the lower tray; if it's not the
correct unit the printer will probably ignore it.
(I haven't tried a deliberate mismatch to see what happens.)
