>> Does "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!" offer any ideas? … .. off the topic, but the phrase bugs me. I know it's become well known recently because of the TV commerical for medic alert devices, but I heard something like it about a dozen years ago, when Peggy Lee was playing Toronto. She had an injured leg, and had to perform sitting in a chair; as she opened, she said "I fell down and couldn't get up" – this was met by a tremendous ovation. Seemed to me the phrase must be known for something back then. Anybody know its history? If you can figure that one out, maybe next time I'll ask if anyone knows the point to "No soap – radio", the lions-in-the-bathtub story. First heard that over 40 years ago, and still don't get it. –Jim

Jim, >>"I fell down and couldn't get up" – this was met by a tremendous ovation. I'll try the line in my show tomorrow night. I would LOVE a tremedous ovation! <g> As a comedian with forty years experience, nothing comes to mind in reference to that line before the commercial. Stars can get applause for just being there, and perhaps the audience was just showing love and support. And you've spent all of that time wondering…<g> Now, I'm surprised that I don't know the "lions in the bathtub" story. It sounds like the punchline for what we used to call "Dr. Pepper Jokes." All were pointless, told by people in the know to make the unknowing feel foolish for not catching the "joke". [Greatly shortened example] Man goes into restaurant with a banana behind his ear on Monday, [repeat through Wednesday] Thursday he come in with celery, the owner can no longer stand it and say, why did you come in here Mon-Wed with a banana behind your ear, and today it's celery? [Reply] Oh, because today is Thursday. Peggy Lee would have gotten laughter and applause for that. I'd get fired! <vbg> It is now "next time", so elaborate on the Lion story! (NOW! I leave tomorrow! <vbg>) Jim Jaywal Productions, Inc.

Well, since you insist… I first heard this story in the early 1950's .. since then, it's made occasional appearances, including a short-lived TV series about six years back called "No Soap .. Radio". Ahem. <clearing throat>. There were two lions in the bathtub. One lion said to the other, "Would you pass the soap, please?" The second replied, "Sorry, but there is no soap". To which the first replied, "Well, in that case, turn on the radio". I am assured that the point of the above story, if there is one, has nothing to do with soap operas. I've seen this one appear from time to time with minor variations. It could well be a hoax. If you can figure out any point to it, let me know. –Jim

Jim, The "soap" story sure sounds as pointless as the one I mentioned about the bananas. Maybe I should try it tonight in my show…Naww, I need the job! <g> Jim Jaywal Productions, Inc.

>> two lions in the bathtub The version that I heard involved rabbits. After one asks for soap, the second retorts, "What do you think I am! A Radio!" Care for carrots? 🙂 Sincerely, 20-May-95 at 10:09p (Mr.) Gayle Lee Fairless Perfessor Fearless from the Rocket City!

Amazing how this sort of thing keeps going around, isn't it? Did the teller or your (rabbit/lion) story offer any explanation as to the point of it? –Jim

Jim, >Did you miss something? I was talking about my daughter and you came back saying that you had two growing up through your deck or something. Guess I'll type slower. <g> You also said something about growing redwoods in my house (mentioned high ceilings and everything). Maybe I ought to stop taking my back medication…:) >>> Lord! That must have been horrible! I occasionally worry about that >>myself, but haven't come up with any realistic solutions. >Does "help, I've fallen and I can't get up!" offer any ideas? As you noted in your post, sometimes there's no one there within hearing distance. So far, when I've thrown out my back and been alone, I've managed to crawl to the bed…;/ I'm working on a curved Amiga Laptop for people with no laps. Sounds interesting. I've got a lap though, and would be quite happy with a "normal" laptop. Though I do like the idea of the laptop with the keyboard that extends out the sides, making it a full sized keyboard once the laptop is opened. Wonder if we'll ever see a "real" Amiga laptop of any flavor….. Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha

>>Wonder if we'll ever see a "real" Amiga laptop of any >>flavor….. Don't we all! >>Maybe I ought to stop taking my back medication…:) Nah, better to be confused than in pain. <g> I'm off to the Caribbean, so will be shutting out the ramblings and soapbox for the next month or so and just getting my cmail. Enjoyed chatting with you. Probably will be posting again in June (till my daughter arrives, then my time is all hers!) Jim Jaywal Productions, Inc.
