#HDTOOLS Error/Help?
3 messages in this thread
Hi I have a question about HDTOOLS. When I try to read the parameters of a
new drive we are thinking of marketing we get the messageUNIT IS NOT A DISK
(TYPE 7). Ok there is a dip switch that lets us switch between type 0 and
7 and I have tried it both ways. Same message. What is HDTOOLS looking
for? While it does not "appear" to read Drive CAP it does know enough to
tell me I'm wrong when I try to enter 1 track too many. Puzzel of the week.
Any help appreciated greatly.
Jay,
The SCSI INQUIRY command should return a 0 for the peripherial
device type field. It should also do a MODE SENSE to determine the
configuration of the device…although it could do a READ CAPACITY
command.
Interesting point though…my book doesn't show a SCSI device type
of 7, only 0 to 5
00 Direct Access device (eg. Magnetic disk)
01 Sequential Access device (eg. Magnetic tape)
02 Printer device
03 Processor Device
04 Write Once…Read Many device (some optical disks)
05 Read Only..Direct Access device (some optical disks)

I talked to my mfg and we had a long disc on sending back bizzaro codes for
scsi inquiry. Naughty! Looks like a new rev before they ship. Thanks for
