I have written a program in AMIGABASIC for playing Turkish music. The notes for a melody are input from the keyboard as DATA statements. The program then plays them sequentially. The frequencies of the notes in Turkish music are somewhat different than those of western music. The intervals are unequal. There are five subnotes inbetween the full notes(i.e. between do and re). I have defined all the frequencies in the program; what I need are the waveshapes of the sounds of various musical instruments. The help I need: 1-The published numerical values of such waveshapes. Where can I find them? 2-Could somebody suggest me a music program, where I can define the frequencies of the notes myself? There are lots of programs around, but I dont know which one. you are certainly tackling a challenging project… I wish you luck! In the meantime, I can offer a couple of suggestions: for waveforms of musical instruments check out Massey's 'A Synthesist's Guide To Acoustical Instruments'. I have found it to be quite useful, although it is geared towards FM synthesis. For a complete musical software package, look fo CMusic. I am not sure where it can be found, but it allows non-realtime synthesis and composition! You might also check out HMSL, which is based on the Forth language. I've never used it, but I have heard very good things about it. If you need futher info just let me know! ..Bill 😉

Look for the MED program in the libraries here, it includes some sampled instruments, and coulbe useful for editing sounds also.

Actually I dont have any problem with the frequencies, but need the amplitude values of various instruments as DATA statements. Ilbeyi, If you need the amplitude values of instruments in DATA statements (for BASIC?) then perhaps a book of Hammond organ drawbar harmonic's setting values could help you compute those values by using the generic equation SUM = SUM + A*COS(theta) + B*COS(theta/2) + C*COS(theta/3) … etc. where A, B, B … are the successive harmonics defined in the book (e.g. a Violin can be defined as harmonic series amplitudes (in hex) of ACE20402, a Banjo as 26ACCC04, etc.). Such values can be graphed by ploting theta over a range of degrees as 0 to 180 – where the harmonic amplitude sums can be appropriately scaled for use by Digital to Analogue (DAC) converters. Dear Ben, Thank you for the much needed information. Your suggestions hit the mark! I have already tried the trigonometric functions with some success. The point is that, one has to try many combinations. I have checked maybe 30-40 different trig function exactly at the same format of equation(series terms). Some of them turned out to be good, some not so good. If I can obtain somebody else's tried data, that would save me time. Your suggestion was most timely. I'll try to get that book. I'll either try THE MALL on Compuserve, or maybe some other source. I am planning to come over to Orlando/Florida by the end of month for a scientific meeting.
