#Install boots PC
4 messages in this thread
I have two Microsoft CR-ROM products — Bookshelf and Developer Network —
that I cannot use, since as soon as I run install from the CD-ROM, my PC
reboots. The drive is an Hitachi CDR-1750, the SCSI adaptor is the Adaptec
1542B and I am using the CorelSCSI driver. The other CD-ROMs I have work
correctly.
Does anybody have any idea where I start looking for this problem?

Bookshelf is sorta notorious for not being compatible with complex systems and,
especially, TSRs. Try creating a minimal boot disk with just the bare
necessities, like your CDROM driver and mscdex, and nothing else. If the
problem evaporates, it becomes a tedious bit of detective work to see which
programs and/or drivers are offending your 2 errant CDs. Since you only have a
couple of problem disks, this kind of problem is the most likely. Best of
luck…
Thanks for the suggestion, but even pared down to a minimum boot disk —
only the SCSI code, QEMM, and the CD-ROM extensions, Microsoft Bookshelf and
Network Developer install program (setup) reboot the system.
And the problem is now wider than Microsoft code. I just got the CorelDRAW!
4.0 upgrade and tried to install it from the CD-ROM. Same problem occurs.
Help!!!!!

Last likely trick in my bag would be to get rid of QEMM and the Network
Developer (whatever that is) too; may not accomplish much at this point, but
settin' up a floppy or alternate config/autoexec files doesn't take too long.
If you are running on a net, you may need to get it gone temporarily or try the
/S switch on mscdex. From there, I'd pull all absolutely unnecessary boards
out of your system and try again. It sounds extreme, but it takes about 5
minutes and can eliminate a squirrel or two. Then I'd run a good diagnostic on
the system (easy commercial programs like Norton v7.0, prior versions don't
have the diagnostics, are available or borrowable), maybe before and after
pulling boards; and, yes, I'd run a virus scan. Several shareware anti-virus
programs are available on CI$ or from almost any BBS; MacAfee's virus program
is well-regarded. Best of luck!!
