#Connecting Faxmodem
24 messages in this thread
I recently purchased a Faxmodem, and GPFax is in the mail to me. I
bought a line switcher to split up voice calls, or any incoming faxes.
Now it comes….STUPID QUESTION TIME!!! Would an incoming Fax be "read" by
the switcher as a FAX, and then GPFax does the rest? That is, should I
plug the computer into the fax jack or the modem jack? Whew…(I shoulda
just bought a fax machine).

The answer depends on which fax switch you got and how you are using
everything. If you are accepting incomming faxes only (all data calls are
outgoing), you probably just hook it up to the fax. If you are accepting
incomming data and fax calls, GPFax should be able to distinguish without
the fax switch on most modems.

I am not running a BBS, so the only incoming data would be faxes. I'm
starting to wonder if I actually even need the switch. Maybe you might
know, does GPFax have a setting for how many rings to pick up after? If
that's the case I can save a few bucks and take back the switch. By the
way the switch is Radio Shack's AFX-200 Auto Fax Switch, and my modem is
Supra's FaxModem 288. I appreciate your help, Dale.

GPFax has a setting for how many ring to pick up after. Using Silent
Answer with your 288, you ought to be able to receive faxes from most
faxes (those which generate CNG tones on origination of call) without any
switches. In fact, your switch likely doesn't do anything that *your*
modem and GPFax are already capable of by themselves.

Well, the switch goes back. I got GPFax last night. I suspect it may
not be the newest version available, as there is no mention of Silent
Answer, however, it does have Auto Answer, and a setting for silencing the
modem (I'm not 100% sure if this all adds up to Silent Answer, or not).
Also there was no mention of setting for how many rings to pick up after.
So. it appears to be an older version.

Lou,
PMFJI
To check what version of GPFax you have open up the About.. menu. This
will tell you what version you are dealing with. There are upgrade
patches for all the GPFax software (up to v2.342 I think) here on CIS (in
AmigaUser-Communications Keywords GPFAX). The absolute latest version
of GPFax is v2.346 and is a complete rewrite of GPFax (ie cannot patch up
to the version with older versions)..

Hi Dale,
For your fax modem to use the Silent Answer Mode you need to split the
line before it goes into your modem. One line will go into the modem, the
other line into your phone and answering machine (the answering machine
needs to be the type that shuts off if you pick up the phone, if it
doesn't you will need the switch.) Set GPFax so that it will wait two
rings longer than the answering machine. When a phone call comes in, your
modem will monitor what the answering machine is doing if it hears the
change tone then it will pick up the phone line. When the answering
machine sees that the phone line has been picked up by the modem it will
shut off. If you pick up the phone and hear the change tone just hang up
the phone.
Silent Answer works fine for me.

Hi, Robert:
Thanks for jumping in, basically, what you've described is what I'm
going to do, as my answering machine shuts off when answered, etc. As I
told Dale, my version of GPFax doesn't appear to have a setting for ring
counts, or Silent Answer. But the switching device goes back, either way.

Lou,
There are patches here to upgrade older versions of GPFax to the latest
version supporting silent answer. There are either two or three patches,
and you need to download them all, then apply them, in order, to a COPY of
your original program.

I installed GPFax on my HD. Can I not ptch that program? or do I have
to use the floppy copy of the original disk?

Yes,…that's what I was trying to communicate…Patch the one on your
hard disk, NOT the original floppy. Holler if you need help.

Lou,
You should be able to specify how many rings till the GPFax steps in.. (I
had a real old version – v2.01 and it allowed me to do this).. The ring
counter is located in the Environment section (just double click on
Environment) and is located in the lower left of the screen. It's in the
Options screen where you specify Data/Fax (this on only Class 2 modems tho
and v2.342+) selection and Silent Answer etc..

I HAVE v2.01, Trent, I looked through the docs, and see no reference to
setting rings. If you could let me know how to I'd appreciate it.

Lou,
What you do is go into the program (ie start it up <g>). Double click on
the Environment button. In the lower left of the Environment window that
opens up you should find an input box that you will be able to specify the
amount of rings before the GPFax engages.

I couldn't be that lucky, Trent. At the lower left of this stoneage
version is only a "retry" window.

=>"Frozen Chosen"?
I live in Cambridge Bay NWT Canada located on Victoria Island above the

This is wierd. My version of 2.01 had the dial box in the lower left
corner. OK.. I read in another post of yours that you were able to send
a fax and that you had recieved a fax. Does this mean you are now able to
access the program? Did the patch work?
Trent
One of the "Frozen Chosen"
No, I only sent and received using the original unpatched 2.01. The
ver I have is, apparently, generic, if that has any bearing.

re: =>"Frozen Chosen"?
FYI the vetrans of at least one winter in Korea were also deemed to be one
of "frozen chosen", which may also be a play on the name of the Korean
city pronounced "chosun" as well. Bit of american military lore here from
another who heard the dreaded words while in formation "you men have
volunteered to join the frozen chosen." clusters on your korea ribbon were
awarded as "1st winter in korea, 2nd winter in korea"…..etc.
What did this have to do with fax modems anyway? I don't know.

Louis,
If you go over to the Modemvendor forum, and drop a message in the Supra
Sec. The Rep. should be able to help you. He gave me a password to use on
the Supra BBS and I was then able to download a new version of GPFax. This
gave me a higher version than the patches found in this forum. The patches
did not solve the Silant Answer mode problem I was having (my modem did
not always pick up the line after the change tone), but the new
version from supra did. With the new version from Supra you will not need
the patches.

I had been E-Mailing Supra regarding another matter, I guess one more
post won't hurt.

Louis,
It took about 4 days before I got my responce from Supra. It came C-Mail
so that the password would not be given out to all people. The person
that is doing the replys over on the modemvendor forum has a lot of replys
so give him alittle time. I do not know if this will help but this is
Supras tech address (76004,565 – Supratech), his name is Mike.

Thanks, Robert. I had been using the address you gave me, so I guess,
like you said, it takes time.

If your Faxmodem has voice-capacities, you might consider AVM, which turns your
Amiga into a voice/fax/data-receiver and sender.
If not, you migh change the switch-box for a simple answering-machine. Connect
it parrallel with phone and faxmodem, put GPFAX into silentanswer.
The following will happen, if a call is made you or the answering-machine will
pick-up. If the caller is a fax, GPfax will hear and grap the line and receive
the fax.
Test this when you have GPFAX before sending away the switchbox.
Hans Keesom Amsterdam.
I had looked at AVM, and considered downloading it, but my modem's docs
make no mention of voice-cpacities. However, I will be doing just what
you suggested with the answering machine. Thanks
