As promised, the way to contact the 51st World Science Fiction
Convention is by dropping a query to: ConFrancisco: 51st World SF
Convention, P.O. Box 22097, San Francisco, CA 94122. I don't have the
current membership rates handy, but they go up rather rapidly soon so it
might be a good idea to send them your query very quickly. The official
dates are 9/3 through 9/6/93, but, as I said, the clan begins gathering on
Wednesday (9/1 in this case), particularly the business folks who get a lot
of their business dinners and negotiations and the like out of the way
early (and registration will be open with no crowds), and parties and such
will be in full swing by 9/2. The Hugo Awards Ceremony (nominations for,
votes for, are included in the membership) is usually either Saturday or
Sunday night and is also included, as is the big masquerade, etc. In fact,
while the membership's in the hundred buck range, there are no other
charges except what you eat (although for forty bucks you can vote for and
join the LA 1996 worldcon there). I'll be in by Wednesday for sure,
hopefully earlier, and will be there until 9/7 when I have to fly home and
put my oldest in 7th grade.
This is the biggest science fiction convention of them all, and there
is nothing else quite like it.

I'll get the WorldCon query in the mail, tomorrow or the next day. Have
been disconnecting and reconnecting computers since taking delivery of this
486 beauty on Saturday pm. I'm now installing working files, having gotten
the most important software in.
This morning and part of the afternoon went to pulling the SBPro
card and shipping it off for the CL crystal patch–but I feel that I have a
true working relationship with the new machine, now that I've been inside . .
Does a 9600 baud modem save money on CI$ forums? I thought that this
topic was covered in TAPNEWS, but can't find it for some reason.

Well, I've switched to 9600 for virtually everything and I find that it
saves a small amount of money and a ton of time over 2400 baud. The 9600
nodes also tend to have MNP error correction which the 1200/2400s do not.
The savings in anything but time aren't dramatic, but it does not cost
you more to save that time, and if you download anything you will REALLY
see an improvement.

I'm at those things for business, Ed, and usually everything that's not
taken up by the family (who travel with me) is all business there. It
really doesn't matter what city (or country) they're in. They're different
than the regionals, where you're just attending or performing. Real work
goes on behind the glitter of the worldcon.
Most worldcons make those kinds of puns, although some, like LACon,
are dull. This is, I think, the first one in San Francisco; prior ones were
in Berkeley/Oakland, when things were smaller and hotels like the Claremont
could be used. Ah, nostalgia…. The 1968 worldcon was at the Claremont in
Berkeley the same weekend as the Berkeley Riots. Trying to have fun with
the waft of tear gas in the air….
Worst named worldcon, by acclamation, was Phoenix in '78, which called
itself IguanaCon.
