"Harnessing 3D Studio" from Delmar Publishing is a tutorial/application
guide for design students who want learn and explore computer design
visualization with Autodesk's 3D Studio. This 700 page book delves into
creating 3D objects, selecting materials and textures, rendering 3D images,
producing keyframe animation, and much more! There are 15 tutorial projects,
as well as a CD-ROM with sample images and animations.
A section of this book is devoted to exploring the many professional
applications that 3D Studio employ. For example, one chapter of the
book deals with Architecture – concepts, visualization, fly-byes,
and walk-throughs. Subsequent chapters include:
Engineering
Product Design
Forensic
Medical
Multimedia and Entertainment
Broadcast
I am seeking interested professionals who would like to contribute tips,
tricks, advice, and sample artwork to be included in the section that
pertains to your field of expertise. This book is targeted for both
students and professionals who are new to 3D Studio and design visualization,
and would like to know what it is used for. Your contributions would be
greatly appreciated, and all contributors will be given credit in the book.
I am also looking for renderings, animations, mesh files, script files,
and sample projects to be included on the CD-ROM. This is a great
opportunity for talented 3D artist who would like to show of his or her work.
I would also like to here from 3DS User groups and Training Centers.
There will be a list included in the appendix.
Submissions and queries should be made to

Glenn,
The engineers at Vibrant have written a description of the difference
between using the standard 3D Studio inline drivers from Vibrant and
an ADI driver. I will "try" to upload it to library 6. Look for
Inline.txt.
Will you be including information about Vibrant's 3D Studio acceleration
software Liquid Speed?
It's been a long time since I lived in the Queen City. Is there still a giant
ape with a pickle painted on the side of a bldg downtown?
Dave
Dave:
Thanks for answering my request.
The "Harnessing" book will be published at the same time release 5 comes out.
As far as I know R.5 will be on WinNT. Are you all developing Liquid Speed
drivers for NT?
As far as the big gorilla-eating-pickle murial – one of my favorites. I believe
its gone – progress you know. It was on 7th St. There are a few other ones but
not as good as that one.

I just uploaded scene I did recently in my spare time. It is a japanese style
landscape done with 3DS using only 23,000 faces and 24M or RAM. The file is
called LANDSCPE.JPG
For all those that want a tranquil scene to post as their Windows wallpaper you
might want to download a copy also. It just eases the tension away <g>

<G> You forgot to add what program you used to create your Japanese
style landscape to the description of your library file. But "voila"
here is the info in a forum message so I've added it to the file and
released it to the public library. It is a soothing scene.

3DS of course! <g> … and a healthy heap of help from Photoshop for ALL of the
texture maps which I created myself. This is all I used.
I'm still a beginner with Photoshop having only bought it a week ago, so wait
until I get the beast under control and see what I could produce. It really is
the BEST 2D graphics program on this planet!

It's very nice! I feel calmer already. <g> Did you use any special IPAS
routines, etc.?
Paul S.
Hey, Paul, long time no hear.
<<It's very nice! I feel calmer already.>>
Thanks, I have the image up on my screen with some japanese
Shakuhachi music(end-blown flute) playing the background and it
really sets the mood.
<<Did you use any special IPAS routines, etc.?>>
No not really, just the standard ones DISPLACE and OPTIMIZE. That's
all.
The pine leaf folage even used displace so that accurate shadows were
produced given any position of the light source. The standard leave
bitmap on a "card" method produced some really ugly results. The
method I used is more suited to the manicured, sculpted appearance of
japanese trees.
So how is the Studio City 2000 project coming along? I'll start on a "dwelling"
when you guys give the green light.

It's hard to see the pines clearly enough to see how you modeled them.
Strangely, I still don't have Yost #7… 🙁 I did just pick up Bones Pro
though… what a great tool!
Did you use displace on the gnarly trees too? Maybe those are the pines
you mean… The whole background has a cool Dr. Suess kind of look to it!

What did you use for materials/maps? I assume there is *some* opacity
mapping going on…? I think the card-style trees are better for animation,
where they just kind of slide by unnoticed.

Well, we're hammering away at the .mli… drop in to Showcase anytime and
see what's going on. The messages there haven't come close to scrolling off
yet!
