#Sanyo GVR-950

Yo,
If anyone knows how to hook up the GVR950 to an editing suite (RS-422) please
let me know. As far as I know this unit is supposed to be RS-422 (Betacam
compatible) but it doesn't seem to give any sign of life out of its 232/422
connector. I lost my manuals (what else is new) and I have no idea what else is
needed to get this stuff to work.

Lost manuals, eh? Sure, we've heard it all before. So how do we know you
haven't just copied a friend's Sanyo and are trying to get it up and running?
Or did you just download it from somewhere on the Internet? Perhaps we should
recommend that Sanyo puts a hardware lock on this thing to prevent occurrences
like this?
What error is the Sanyo giving you, anyway? Invalid Normal Array? :^)

Invalid Normal Array? Nah… But the synch does go haywire after a
couple of minutes. Darn… I should know better not to download video
equipment with my replicator…
Gus- You might contact Bob Howard @ BCD Associates (405)843-4574, or you can
reach via CIS at76004,3363. They also have a forum on Mulitimedia Vendor A. He
built the controller that goes in the Sanyo units, so he probably can get you
pointed in the right direction. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the note. That did it. Not only the cabling is different
(pin 6 must be grounded) the power-on order is also important.
Controller first, Sanyo second. Now they talk to each other (though
they have some very heavy accent to over come)…

Yep. For what is worth, the Sanyo responds just fine. The problem I
noticed is that its implementation of the 422 protocol is a bit too
slow. The key to that protocol is that no answer should take longer
than 9ms, beyond which it is to believe the link is bad. The Sanyo
consistently takes longer to respond, specially when searching. The
problem is not mechanical, it's the lousy CPU controlling the 422
protocol. But when you consider the price of the unit, it isn't that
bad.
I think that's why they came up with the GVR-S955. I'm not sure of the exact
differences because Sanyo wouldn't upgrade the Dealer units…wanted us to buy
another one! Their solution was for me to eat the old unit or hang a new client
with the old demo unit……. I had a problem with that. <g>
I had a bit of a falling out with them over this, plus the fact they increased
the retail on the new units by $500. and Decreased the dealer margins. At the
Same time everyone in the World was being introduced to the DPS PAR.
Smooooth Marketing move. <g>
I basicly had had enough!
Besides we were authorized for the DPS Par unit which made the GVR's less
attractive. It's still a Great little Deck but I don't care for their way of
doing business regarding dealer support and their marketing.
Too Bad because they had about a 6 month jump on the industry had they not
dropped the ball they could have incorporated their editing package and even
maybe worked something out with Digital.
Well that didn't happen and now Sanyo is overpriced and outdated. Their new
GVR-S955 editing package isn't really very up to date either because that type
of hybred system doesn't work well at the S-VHS Level. Now if they'd come up
with a Beta-SP Deck……. but Sony already did that with the UVW-1800 and the
"new" unit you mentioned.

Add to that their service division. Had my deck in two different times, a
total of over two months, and they "could not replicate the problem," even
after seeing sample footage I sent along! Bought it (GVR-S950) because the PAR
was untested at the time. Dumped it for my PAR and never looked back! Anyone
want a pile of S-VHS tapes? (Just kidding, I might find a use for them.)
