#Rayman & self-illum?

Hi Andrew! RayMan Release 1.0 supports self illuminated materials but not self illu. mappings and masks. BTW: if a material is self illuminated it doesn`t act like a omni-light. (Maybe you thought that because RayMan is a raytracer…). That means that a self illum. material doesn`t throw light rays through the scene and doesn`t illuminate other objects. That`s the same like 3DS. (… well, I should think about to implement this as an feature for following versions: self illum. materials should act like a omni-light with little intensity…) Hope this helps. Michael

Michael, I wasn't expecting self-illuminated materials to act as lights (though I agree it would be a great feature. I have seen a radiosity renderer for .3DS file that does just that). To try and track down the problem I created a simple scene containing just one sphere, one camera and no lights. The sphere was assigned a simple sel-illuminated material with no maps (the GREEN NEON material from the default 3DS material library). When I rendered this in 3DS it came up the expected bright green but a Rayman rendering of the same scene only gave me a dull green sphere (just visible from the low ambient light level). It obviously isn't picking up on the self-illuminated aspect of the material. I've fiddled with most of the renderer settings without success. Any ideas? Andrew.

Hi Andrew, well I made a test and I saw that RayMan doesn`t render self illum. materials. I thought we already had implemented this feature in the actual release but now I`m not sure. I`ll look whether self illum. materials aren`t implemented in RayMan 1 or whether it`s a program error. I`ll tell you as soon I know it… Michael
