Has anyone had success in using OnLine! with Whap!? Whenever I call up the terminal program, I get disconnected from CIS. Any thoughts? Paul

I just tried Online! (version 1.0) and had no problems. I have Online! in the root directory of my Whap disk, (which was originaly my Online! disk renamed to Whap). Click on Interactive Terminal and Whap! logs on to CIS, goes to the register now screen and then comes up with the Online! screen. Log off from CIS through Online!, quit online, and you are back into Whap! offline. Works fine for me.

Whap! appears to be incompatible with Diga!. When Whap! loads it Diga! puts up a can't load serial.device requester. Selecting cancel aborts and goes back to Diga!. Download Access! it works fine (tired of adding exclamation points to the end of program names! <grin>). -Greg

Greg, Sounds more like Diga! is not compatible with Whap! 😉 Doug

Greg, Didn't! you! know! it! was! in! to! add! exclamation! marks! to! term! program! names!? (!) <grin!> – Keith!

I don't believe you meant to send me that mail on Diga! since I don't use it. Paul

Just letting you know that other term progs may not work, either. -Greg

It appears to work okay when I open up the modem and "Force DTR ON" using the DIP switches. However, when I do that, Whap! does not automatically drop the connection (unless it is set up for automatic timed mode). Paul

Greg, It appears to be the other way around! Diga! is incompatible with Whap! <grin> Actually, it IS Diga!'s fault. Word Perfect Library has the same problem. Both attempt to open the serial device in exclusive mode. Whap! opens it in shared. So, both Diga! and Word Perfect's phone dialer program fail if Whap! is loaded. The authors of those programs failed to consider that the Amiga is multitasking and some other program may want to use the serial port too. Best, -jcs-

Jim: Do you know anything about BBS-PC!'s method of using the serial.device? I had previously assumed that it was going to the hardware, but now that you've mentioned "shared-mode", I believe it may be grabbing it in exclusive mode. The reason I ask the question, is that I ALWAYS have BBS-PC! running in the foreground, with WordPerfect, Whap! and some utilities in the background. When I want to Whap!Cis, I have to close down BBS-PC! when I really don't want to. Not such a bad thing with hard drive speeds, but I am always trying to make my life easier! Perhaps I should Whap! a message to MicroSystems Software concerning this matter. Charles Conlow 74116,3067

Charles, I don't know if BBS-PC opens serial.device in shared or exclusive. However, a bbs might qualify as an exception and should be opened in exclusive. You have no control when a uer is going to call. If you are running a terminal program and someone calls your bbs, in shared mode, you are likely to get a visit from the turbuned one. Best, 4h -jcs-

It was nice to find that once I put online! into ram that it became highly feasible to run it for cis from whap (assuming that I get the commercial free version, which I will send for). I do suspect that if online is already running that I shouldn't try to get into whap, but that vice versa is ok. Actually, since I put online into ram instead of making it resident, I know longer need to keep it running all of the time. Ron

Ron, If Online is running, you can bring up Whap!, just don't have it dial. But, you can read messages, select downloads, etc. Just make sure you terminate Online before you have Whap! go online. Best, -jcs-

I hav een using Online! successfully for quite some time. …Dave

Well, it keeps dropping the line when it loads OnLine! here. Paul

Paul, Are you doing an "assign online!: whap!:"? Don't know if it will help but just a thought. …Dave
#757From: Paul MacDonaldJul 17, 1988 9:09 AM
ASSIGN ONLINE!: WHAP!: would have Whap! look for OnLine! in my Whap! directory. Assignments are not the problem. DTR must be forced ON for it to work (at least with my modem). Paul
#794From: RON TROYJul 17, 1988 11:42 AM
At least with your modem. With my supra 2400 I don't have any problem. Ron

I use online v2.01, which I have copied to a directory in ram:. I have set the whap to find it there, and copied my trm and scp file to whap:. Except for whap setting cis to non screen settings, online is fine this way. Ron
#756From: Paul MacDonaldJul 17, 1988 9:08 AM
Oh, Whap! has no problem finding it. The problem is that without DTR forced ON, the switchover to OnLine! causes the carrier to drop. Paul
#779From: RON TROYJul 17, 1988 9:59 AM
I've been able to get online to work well enough – I put in in ram:xxx and point whap to it. I did see someone else with a problem, though. Ron

The same thing happens occasionally when Whap! invokes Access!, at least with my setup. A split second after Access! comes up, my Avatex 1200 modem hangs up. It has to be a glitch on DTR because there is no other way to cause this modem to hang up other than the power switch.
#849From: KEITH YOUNGJul 17, 1988 4:55 PM
Jon, You might try deleting the "ATZ\n" (or whatever you have as your modem init string ) in the DEFINE window of Access!. I don't know if this will help, but it might possibly be causing your modem to hang up when it resets. – Keith
#878From: Jon BryanJul 17, 1988 6:20 PM
I took that out a long time ago, Keith. Maybe it's a system bug, but the DTR line does seem to glitch. I haven't put a scope on it, but there is no other way to make this modem hang up.
#941From: Jul 17, 1988 11:48 PM
Jon, I've never had a problem with Whap! and Access! using Supra, CTS, A1680, or Hayes 300 modem. Best, -jcs-
#1167From: Jon BryanJul 19, 1988 12:24 AM
I don't have a scope, so I can't tell you for certain that DTR is glitching. I assume that the glitch is quite narrow, since the LED doesn't even twitch, and that most modems don't "see" it. Mine does, a significant percentage of the time. I've become extremely reluctant to invoke the terminal program from Whap.
#1203From: Jul 19, 1988 2:12 AM
Jon, All I can say is that it works for me. Whap! opens 3 serial ports. 1 for read, 1 for write, 1 strictly to monitor DTR. When Whap! is sitting at the main screen all are closed. When it invokes another terminal program read and write are closed and DTR remains open doing nothing but monitoring the line. It sounds like a hardware problem with your modem. Best, -jcs-
#1347From: Paul MacDonaldJul 19, 1988 5:55 PM
Some modems have an internal dip-switch to force DTR on. It may be that the setting on his modem has that feature disabled. That would cause the connection to go away when the terminal program is invoked. Paul P.S. The Section Header bug – it really is there. Do you mean you know its there but can't figure it out, or you don't see it at all? What happens is when I collect message headers for marking, the section field is not completely overwritten. Let's say the first message header is from Telecommunications. That looks fine on the screen. If the next message header is from Whap!, instead of the section field saying Whap!, it says Whap!ommunications. In other words, you gotta reset the field with a blank line first, and Whap! doesn't seem to be doing that. Paul
#1511From: Jul 20, 1988 8:56 AM
Paul, I believe you about the message header. At first I thought it was related to the problem of the header only being partially displayed when it contained a slash. It's not. Best, -jcs-
#1372From: Jon BryanJul 19, 1988 7:12 PM
Then it's a bug in serial.device that causes a glitch in DTR when it's opened. It's just not long enough to cause most modems to hang up.
