#Memory config

I'll go one even further. Is there a way to get 3DS to run under Win3.1 and
DOS5.0 with the latest HIMEM, EMM386 and SMARTDRV? Whether or not this is
slow, is better than never using it. I've heard that this combination is
now VCPI compliant and should run. When starting up 3DS (without WIN3.1
running) with my current config settings I get the following Message:
"The 386 chip is currently executing in virtual 8086 mode under the control
of another program. You must turn off this other program in order to use
386|DOS-Extender to run in protected mode."
My config file is:
DEVICE =C:\UTILITY\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE =C:\UTILITY\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE noems x=c000-c7FF
DEVICEhigh=C:\UTILITY\WINDOWS\setver.exe
SHELL =C:\UTILITY\WINDOWS\command.com /P /E:750
BUFFERS =5
FILES =80
BREAK =off
STACKS =0,0
LASTDRIVE =e
DOS =umb,high
My autoexec.bat file is:
VERIFY off
PROMPT $P$G
SET COMSPEC=c:\utility\windows\COMMAND.COM
SET TEMP=d:\temp
PATH C:\utility\windows
LOADHIGH C:\utility\windows\share.exe
LOADHIGH C:\utility\mouse\lmouse.com
C:\UTILITY\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 5120 5120
rem call C:\UTILITY\NETWORK\PROGRAMS\NET.BAT
win/3
I'm running a 486/33 with 20Mb of RAM.
I'd appreciate a response and suggestions for a .PIF file.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Personally, I don't see any reason why someone would want to run 3DS under
windows… it isn't a multi-tasking environment in this case, so I don't
think you can share processor time between 3DS and a Windows App. At any
rate, I believe you will have to ditch the noems switch that you are using
on emm386.exe… which probably means that you won't be able to get Windows
to run… I haven't noticed anyone setting their system up this way and I
haven't taken the time to decipher what is necessary to help those that are
now interested in the Windows Player and running under Windows. I suppose
it's more or less pioneer territory where the heavies at Autodesk are
concerned.

Craig,
I think the ability to run 3DS under Windows is very useful. If all you
ever use is 3DS then fine, but if you need a whole suite of applications
available at the same time it makes work so much more productive.
Especially when developing multimedia applications.

Yes… but you are suffering some performance loss in a memory scheme such
as 3DS uses when you are either providing all the memory that Windows can
make available for 3DS and switching to another program is therefore
slower, or you're giving Windows enough breathioff
ng room and slowing down
3DS. As I understand it… all you're doing is using Windows as a task
swapper in this case… and you might as well run DOS 5's task swapper.
I agree that something that works like it would under OS/2 makes alot of
sense. In fact, it would be smart of the Yost group to allow you to "Render
in the background" while you do something else by allowing 3DS to manage
the system <grin>.
C#
Craig,
Running Windows, 3DS and Animator Pro in a 32 Mb system should be possible,
I just set the amount of memory in the PIF file and use the System Box
settings to control background operation. Granted Windows programs won't
multitask yet but DOS programs do quite well.

I'm saying that there is never enough memory for 3DS… and I sure don't
see the benefit of allocating ANY of what I have to Windows since I would
be more interested in getting 3DS to put out what I'm after as fast as
possible (usually too late, too <grin>).
Hey… I LIKE windows… and I expect to set up my machine with everything
BUT AutoCAD, Animator Pro, and 3DS under Windows… but when it comes to
crank it out time, move over pseudo-OS… gimme DOS. NT may be another
matter…
